2019 Acura MDX Reviews Summary

Slowly but surely, Acura is picking itself up and dusting itself off after a decade of wayward product development and marketing decisions took Honda’s luxury division off-track. Through it all, though, the MDX midsize 3-row crossover SUV has propped the company up, selling in great enough quantities and at high enough profit margins to ensure Acura’s survival. Now in its sixth year since a complete redesign, is the 2019 MDX still worthy in a battle against newer competitors?

2020 Kia Telluride Reviews Summary

Usually, when I step out of an SUV and feel great, there's a luxury nameplate on the tailgate. Not this time. The Telluride grabbed me from the moment my white-over-grey test car arrived. And after 500 miles, the Telluride proved how impressive it is against every SUV in the $30,000 to $50,000 range.

Kia hasn't made a truly big SUV since the 2009 Borrego, which it quickly canceled after bad reviews while a nation reeled from record-high gas prices. The smaller Sorento took over as Kia's 3-row SUV, except it wasn't roomy enough for six or seven people (and still isn't). That's not to say we don't like the Sorento—it's one of our highest-rated cars—but for families who want the most space, technology, and amenities, the 2020 Telluride is Kia's new champ.

Look and feel
2019 Acura MDX
9/10
2020 Kia Telluride
8/10

The 2019 Acura MDX had long been a dominant force in the midsize, 3-row crossover segment, largely due to a lack of competitive alternatives. With its continuous improvements since 2017, including the introduction of the Sport Hybrid version and a facelift, the MDX maintained its appeal. The 2019 model featured an upgraded infotainment system, a new A-Spec Package trim level, and improved interior materials. The A-Spec trim, with its Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, offered a sporty appearance with unique design elements and a more aggressive look. Inside, the A-Spec boasted heated and ventilated front seats, red leather and black Alcantara upholstery, and a dual-cowl dashboard design, creating a blend of luxury and practicality.

In contrast, the 2020 Kia Telluride marked a significant transformation for Kia, shedding its reputation for cheap adequacy. The Telluride's design was upscale, combining boxy presence with fluid curves, reminiscent of luxury SUVs. Its clean, minimal design featured special details like amber LED running lights and large "TELLURIDE" badges. Inside, the Telluride's cabin was reminiscent of a Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, with high-quality materials and a spacious, inviting interior. The SX trim, with the Prestige Package, added Nappa leather seats and a soft headliner, creating a luxurious feel. The Telluride's interior was well-equipped, with configurable infotainment menus and a range of features that impressed passengers.

Performance

7/10

The 2019 Acura MDX came equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The optional SH-AWD system, priced at $2,000, enhanced the driving experience with torque-vectoring capabilities and improved weight distribution. The MDX Sport Hybrid model offered a 3.0-liter V6 engine paired with three electric motors, delivering 321 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque, along with better city fuel economy. The MDX A-Spec trim provided a sporty driving experience, with quick acceleration and improved transmission performance. Despite some brake rumble during spirited driving, the MDX offered a firm yet comfortable ride, with a fuel economy of 19.7 mpg on the testing loop.

The 2020 Kia Telluride featured a 3.8-liter V6 engine, generating 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Available in both FWD and AWD configurations, the Telluride's power delivery was sometimes delayed, and the transmission's shifting could be rough. Despite this, the Telluride offered strong braking and a creamy ride, aided by double-paned glass and acoustic insulation. The Telluride's towing capacity matched the Honda Pilot's at 5,000 pounds, with a $795 Towing package. Fuel economy was EPA-estimated at 19 mpg city, 24 highway, and 21 combined, with the test vehicle averaging 21 mpg over 500 miles.

Form and function
2019 Acura MDX
9/10
2020 Kia Telluride
9/10

The 2019 Acura MDX offered a comfortable and practical interior, with fantastic front seats and a GPS-linked triple-zone climate control system. The second-row seat provided ample space for adults and children, while the third-row seat was less comfortable and best suited for occasional use. With the third-row seat folded, the MDX offered 38.4 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 68.4 cubic feet with the second-row seats down. However, with all seats in use, cargo space was limited to 15 cubic feet.

The 2020 Kia Telluride could seat seven or eight passengers, depending on the trim. The SX trim featured reclining captain's chairs in the second row, with heating and cooling options, manual side-window shades, and a third climate zone. The Telluride's cabin was spacious, with ample room in the second row and a tolerable third row for adults. Cargo capacity was 21 cubic feet with all seats raised and 87 cubic feet with them flat. The interior featured analog gauges, buttons, and knobs with a damped precision, complemented by two displays, including a 10.3-inch screen on EX and SX models.

Technology
2019 Acura MDX
5/10
2020 Kia Telluride
8/10

The 2019 Acura MDX's infotainment system included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but its dual-screen setup was considered cumbersome. The top display handled navigation and vehicle settings, while the bottom touchscreen managed radio and climate functions. The voice-recognition system was often unreliable, and the screen sizes were deemed small for a luxury SUV. AcuraLink Connect services were available with a 90-day trial, offering features like automatic collision notification and SOS emergency calling.

The 2020 Kia Telluride came standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Kia's UVO link, which allowed remote access via an app. Upper trims featured fast and accurate voice inputs for navigation, though live traffic and weather updates were less frequent than competitors. The SX trim offered a live blind-spot feed, Highway Driving Assist, and an intercom for rear passengers. The Harman Kardon surround stereo provided excellent sound quality, while the standard 6-speaker system was less impressive.

Safety
2019 Acura MDX
8/10
2020 Kia Telluride
8/10

The 2019 Acura MDX boasted impressive crash-test ratings, with the AcuraWatch suite of safety systems standard on all trims. The Technology Package added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The MDX received a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, with Acceptable ratings for headlight performance and child safety seat anchor accessibility. Acura's Jewel Eye LED headlights and AcuraWatch systems were noted for their performance, though the adaptive cruise control system lacked refinement.

The 2020 Kia Telluride had not yet been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but it was expected to receive top scores. The Telluride came standard with a comprehensive suite of active driver assists, including forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Safe Exit Assist and a driver's knee airbag were also standard, while surround-view cameras and front parking sensors were optional.
