2020 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

Nissan hasn’t redesigned the Rogue since 2014, but an all-new version of this SUV is coming for the 2021 model year. In the meantime, dealers will be eager to sell remaining stocks of the outgoing 2020 Nissan Rogue, and the deals on these new cars ought to be mighty juicy. Should you bite? Should you wait? Or should you shop for something else? The answers to these questions depend on who you are and what you value in a compact crossover SUV.

2021 Kia Telluride Reviews Summary

Kia’s West Point, Georgia assembly plant can’t build enough Tellurides to satisfy customer demand, earning the SUV an appropriate nickname. Within Kia, this SUV is affectionately known as the "Selluride." Given its popularity, it’s not surprising that the 2021 Kia Telluride sees few changes. A new Nightfall Edition option package debuts, the key fob gets a new remote engine starting button, the trailering harness switches to a seven-pin design, and more versions of the SUV have LED headlights. Wolf Gray is a new paint color, available only with the Nightfall Edition package.

Look and feel
2020 Nissan Rogue
7/10
2021 Kia Telluride
9/10

The 2020 Nissan Rogue, available in S, SV, and SL trims, offered a straightforward approach with a single engine and transmission combination, and a choice between front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD). Our test model, an SL trim with front-drive, included the SL Premium Package, carpeted floor and cargo mats, and a first-aid kit, totaling $34,870 with destination charges. Despite its age, the Rogue maintained an attractive appearance, though the V-Motion grille and fender swells were slightly exaggerated. The 19-inch aluminum wheels on the SL trim added to its appeal. Inside, the Rogue's age was more evident, with older styling themes and unimpressive plastic surfaces. However, the padded center console sides were a thoughtful touch for driver comfort.

The 2021 Kia Telluride was available in four trims: LX, S, EX, and SX, with both FWD and optional AWD. Pricing ranged from $32,190 to $42,490, excluding destination charges. The Telluride SX, especially with the Prestige package, transformed into a luxury SUV at a mainstream price, featuring premium Nappa leather, a suede headliner, a head-up display, and heated and ventilated second-row seats. The Nightfall Edition package added a blacked-out look with gloss black 20-inch wheels. Our test vehicle, equipped with AWD, the Prestige package, and more, was priced at $50,180. The Telluride's styling was impeccable, both inside and out, with a contemporary design and quality execution. The transmission shifter, placed to preserve storage space, felt solid and smooth, enhancing the sense of quality. The only drawbacks were the limited interior color options and some inexpensive-looking plastic.

Performance
2020 Nissan Rogue
4/10
2021 Kia Telluride
9/10

The 2020 Nissan Rogue featured a single powertrain: a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Weighing up to 3,671 pounds, the Rogue's powertrain was adequate but not sporty, even with a Sport driving mode. While the CVT maximized power, the Rogue struggled during freeway acceleration, passing, and climbing grades, often responding with noise rather than action. The EPA estimated 29 mpg in combined driving for FWD models, but testing revealed a disappointing 24.9 mpg. The Rogue's ride and handling benefited from Intelligent Trace Control and Active Ride Control, but it wasn't particularly fun to drive. The steering was lifeless and heavy, and the suspension lacked isolation, with occasional CVT drone.

The 2021 Kia Telluride, technically a crossover, came with a 3.8-liter V6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Kia's Drive Mode Select offered Snow, Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Smart modes. Optional AWD included a low-speed Lock function for maximum traction, aided by eight inches of ground clearance. The Telluride excelled in challenging conditions, such as snowy and muddy trails. In Los Angeles and Malibu testing, the Telluride's ride and handling impressed, nearly eliminating "head-toss" with its suspension tuning. The MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, along with self-leveling rear suspension on EX and SX trims, provided a firm yet compliant ride. The Telluride's 20-inch wheels offered commendable grip, and brake-based Torque Vectoring Cornering Control enhanced handling. The EPA estimated 21 mpg for AWD models, with testing averaging 20.5 mpg.

Form and function

The 2020 Nissan Rogue's interior posed challenges for those with larger frames or longer legs. The seats, though undersized, featured Nissan's Zero Gravity design and Quick Comfort heating. However, finding the right driving position was difficult, leading to discomfort. The back seat, in contrast, offered excellent thigh support, a proper backrest angle, and a panoramic sunroof, making it a preferred spot for passengers. In-cabin storage was limited, but cargo space was generous, with 39 cubic feet behind the back seat, underfloor storage, and a Divide-n-Hide cargo management system.

The 2021 Kia Telluride excelled in comfort and utility. The SX trim's driver's seat offered 14-way power adjustments, including lumbar and thigh support, with a heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel. The Prestige package added distinctive leather upholstery and acoustic sound-absorbing glass. The test SUV featured sliding second-row captain's chairs with heating and ventilation, side-window sunshades, and an overhead climate control panel. The third-row seat was usable for adults, with easy access via a button or pass-through. Kia provided ample storage, including smartphone bins and USB ports. The "smart" hands-free power liftgate opened automatically, revealing 21 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 87 cubic feet with seats folded.

The 2020 Nissan Rogue's infotainment system included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a hands-free text messaging assistant. Upgrades offered SiriusXM, navigation, a Bose sound system, and NissanConnect Services with features like remote access and emergency SOS calling. However, the 7-inch touchscreen was outdated, with slow response and subpar voice recognition, diminishing the tech experience.

The 2021 Kia Telluride featured Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM. LX and S trims had an 8-inch display, while EX and SX offered a 10.25-inch screen with navigation. UVO Link Lite services were free for five years, with additional plans available. Features included Rear Occupant Alert, remote engine start, and Alexa/Google Assistant compatibility. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with menu shortcuts and intuitive operation. The SX trim included a 10-speaker Harman Kardon system, Driver Talk, and Quiet Mode. The Prestige package added a head-up display with blind-spot notifications.

Safety

The 2020 Nissan Rogue's Safety Shield 360 included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additional features were Rear Door Alert and Tire Fill Alert. Options included a surround-view camera and ProPilot Assist. However, the Rogue's crash-test ratings were lackluster, with a 4-star overall rating from NHTSA and issues with IIHS ratings.

The 2021 Kia Telluride's Drive Wise collection included blind-spot warning, lane-maintenance technology, forward-collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking. Highway Drive Assist, standard on EX and SX trims, offered Level 2 semi-autonomous driving. Additional features included Rear Occupant Alert and Safe Exit Assist. SX trim added front parking sensors, a surround-view camera, and Blind-Spot View Monitor. The Telluride earned a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a 5-star overall rating from NHTSA, despite some frontal-impact concerns.
