2021 Kia Telluride Reviews Summary

Kia’s West Point, Georgia assembly plant can’t build enough Tellurides to satisfy customer demand, earning the SUV an appropriate nickname. Within Kia, this SUV is affectionately known as the "Selluride." Given its popularity, it’s not surprising that the 2021 Kia Telluride sees few changes. A new Nightfall Edition option package debuts, the key fob gets a new remote engine starting button, the trailering harness switches to a seven-pin design, and more versions of the SUV have LED headlights. Wolf Gray is a new paint color, available only with the Nightfall Edition package.

2021 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Full-size SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator represent the smallest slice of the luxury SUV market. They're the heaviest, hugest, and fanciest people movers sold by mainstream automakers—and you can count them all on two hands. The Navigator, a popular nameplate since 1998, was redesigned in dramatic fashion for 2018. In its fourth model year, this Navigator still delights us as we test newer competitors costing at or above its $77,000 starting price. Foreign nameplates offer no equal to the Navigator, and it's not for sheer size or a desire to lift up Lincoln that we say this is one of the best American vehicles, among both trucks and cars, ever made.

Look and feel
2021 Kia Telluride

2021 Lincoln Navigator
9/10

The 2021 Kia Telluride was available in four trim levels: LX, S, EX, and SX, with both front-wheel drive (FWD) and optional all-wheel drive (AWD). Base pricing ranged from $32,190 to $42,490, excluding destination charges. The Telluride S trim offered significant value, but many opted for the top-of-the-line SX trim, which could be equipped with a Prestige package, transforming it into a luxury SUV. This package added premium stitched Nappa leather, a simulated suede headliner, a head-up display (HUD), and heated and ventilated second-row seats. The Nightfall Edition package, new for 2021, provided a blacked-out look with gloss black 20-inch aluminum wheels and a unique grille insert. Our test vehicle, equipped with the Nightfall Edition, AWD, Prestige package, Towing package, and other accessories, had a sticker price of $50,180, including a $1,170 destination charge.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator, in contrast, was a standout in its class, shedding its past image as a dressed-up Ford Expedition. The Navigator Reserve trim, priced at $92,000, exuded elegance and understatement despite its massive size. It featured simple rectilinear shapes defining the grille, windows, headlights, and taillights, with tasteful chrome accents. Our Pristine White test vehicle, equipped with the Monochromatic Package, black wheels, and an illuminated Lincoln logo, was a striking presence during our winter test. The Navigator's interior impressed with seven color palettes, layered wood trim, a floating center console, and a minimalist digital instrument panel. Materials were top-notch, and the Black Label trims offered even more luxurious textures and softer leather.

Performance

2021 Lincoln Navigator
8/10

The 2021 Kia Telluride was powered by a 3.8-liter V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. Kia’s Drive Mode Select technology offered Snow, Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Smart driving modes. AWD was optional, featuring a low-speed Lock function for maximum traction and eight inches of ground clearance. During testing, the Telluride demonstrated impressive off-road capabilities and handled various weather conditions with ease. The suspension tuning minimized head-toss, providing a smooth ride over uneven surfaces. The Telluride's MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, along with self-leveling rear suspension on EX and SX trims, ensured a firm and connected sensation at lower speeds and a more compliant ride at higher speeds. The Telluride averaged 20.5 mpg on our testing loop, close to the EPA's 21 mpg combined rating for AWD models.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator featured a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Available in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD), the Navigator felt surprisingly sprightly for its size. The 4WD system was smooth and responsive, with a towing capacity of 8,300 pounds for 4WD models and 8,700 pounds for RWD models. Fuel economy was less impressive, averaging in the teens, consistent with the EPA's 17 mpg combined rating. The Navigator's adaptive dampers provided a decent ride, though not as refined as the Cadillac Escalade's magnetic shocks and air springs. The Navigator excelled in highway refinement and power, with paddle shifters adding a touch of sportiness.

Form and function

2021 Lincoln Navigator
8/10

The 2021 Kia Telluride excelled in comfort and utility. The SX trim's driver’s seat offered 14-way power adjustments, including lumbar support and thigh extension, with heating and ventilation for both front seats. The second-row captain’s chairs, also heated and ventilated, provided ample space and easy access to the third row. The Telluride's third-row seat was suitable for adults, though not as spacious as the Volkswagen Atlas. Storage solutions were abundant, with smartphone bins, USB ports, and grocery bag hooks. The smart hands-free power liftgate revealed 21 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 46 cubic feet with the third row folded and 87 cubic feet with the second row down.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator offered vast interior space, accommodating six adults comfortably. The second-row captain's chairs were manually reclining and tilting, with an optional console for climate and stereo controls. The Navigator's cargo space was generous, with 19 cubic feet behind the third row, 57 cubic feet behind the second, and 103 cubic feet in total. The long-wheelbase Navigator L provided even more storage. The front seats were highly adjustable and luxurious, with separate thigh extensions, bolsters, and massage programs. Visibility was excellent, though parking was challenging due to the vehicle's size.

Technology

2021 Lincoln Navigator
7/10

The 2021 Kia Telluride came standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The LX and S trims featured an 8-inch touchscreen, while the EX and SX had a 10.25-inch screen with navigation. Kia’s UVO Link Lite connected services plan was free for five years, offering features like Rear Occupant Alert and remote engine start. The SX trim included a 10-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system, Driver Talk, and Quiet Mode. The Prestige package added a head-up display with blind-spot notifications.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator's 10-inch touchscreen felt small compared to newer competitors. The infotainment system was intuitive but lacked wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 20-speaker Revel Ultima stereo was good but not exceptional. The Navigator offered 4G WiFi, wireless device charging, and a smartwatch app. Rear entertainment included Roku media streaming and various connections. Drive mode animations and a simple interface were highlights, though the lack of onboard apps and wireless updates was a drawback.

Safety

2021 Lincoln Navigator
8/10

The 2021 Kia Telluride featured a comprehensive suite of safety technologies, including blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assistance, forward-collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking. EX and SX trims added Highway Drive Assist, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance. The SX trim also included front parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, and a Blind-Spot View Monitor. The Telluride earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator received five stars overall from the NHTSA, with four stars for rollover resistance. The IIHS had not rated the Navigator. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and auto high beams. Adaptive cruise control was optional, though the Navigator's self-steering capabilities were not as advanced as some competitors.
