Having fleshed out the Bao (Leopard) 4×4 lineup that forms part of its name – as well as producing the Tai (Titanium) series of electric vehicles – Fangchengbao revealed a whole new direction for the Fangcheng (Formula) bit at the recent Auto China show in Beijing. The Formula S and X are sleek and sporty passenger cars that could not be further away from their rectilinear siblings if they had tried.
The BYD spinoff envisions Formula S to be a lineup of executive cars that includes the regular sedan, a Formula S GT wagon (not shown here) in the vein of the Denza Z9GT, and the even longer Formula SL. All three – set to be launched in China in the third quarter of 2026 – are said to be over five metres long, with a three-metre-long wheelbase and a width of two metres. Blimey, how big is the SL going to be?
Meanwhile, the striking Formula X is an out-and-out supercar, all long and low with no roof, a cut-down windscreen, a pair of dramatic butterfly doors and lurid green paint. Fangchengbao says all four cars carry the brand’s new F Design language and were styled under the concept of “Life Metal Aesthetics” (whatever that means), with cues such as cheetah-inspired headlights and “infinity” taillights.
However, it’s hard not to see heavy influences from the Denza Z, albeit chopped and changed to fit the longer body and four doors. The Formula X may seem redundant given that the Z is already a supercar (and there is now a Spider version of the latter), but it is even more outlandish with a long nose drawing comparisons to Ferrari’s front-engined V12 models, most notably the ultra-exclusive Monza SP2.
The lengthy proboscis hints at a big multi-cylinder engine mounted longitudinally, although no details have been revealed just yet. While technically still a concept, Fangchengbao says the Formula X is “80% identical” to the production model. As for the Formula S series, the company promises it will offer more luxurious interiors and improved handling.
The convergence in design languages between Fangchengbao and Denza suggests that BYD is making Fangchengbao models easier to be rebadged as Denzas, simplifying homologation and exports. Are you excited to see these cars sold outside of China? Let us know in the comments.
