Advertisers often pick on a metaphorical theme to sell their wares. This 1955 example is one of series that draped wallpapers and fabrics around musical instruments – then stretched the English language to accommodate the message. #history #richardrobertsarchive #advertisement #archive #historypreserved #stockport #heritage #manchester #research #printadvertising

There’s an Italian word I particularly like. The word ARIA. It means three things. 1) air 2) a vocal piece in opera 3) look, vibe, atmosphere ARIA is the invisible, intangible quality of a product or a work of art (The aria of Mona Lisa is where her attraction lies and her aria is infinitely more interesting than all the perfect AI reproduction of similar women in the same age). We can translate it then as “meaning” “depth” “authenticity” – all words that refer to immeasurable qualities, which identify the only element that makes us curious, that gives us the gift of attention (a highly priced asset in our digital world). How to create that aria – we can also call it “aura” or “halo” (of interest, curiosity, and attraction) – is not something that comes at the end of a creative or entrepreneurial process, but rather represents its very core. Executing perfectly without “aria” leads to a product that does not “breathe”, does not “sing,” and does not create an “atmosphere”. In the #italianinnovators episode I dedicated to Neapolitan tie maker E. Marinella, I describe how to imbue an object (in this case, a silk strip) with a defining “aria” (in this case, the unique air, life, and look of Naples). Hopefully this reflection can open up a new understanding of execution not just as perfection of processes, but also, and most importantly, as the construction of their magic. VOCES8, the VOCES8 US Scholars and Lyyra combine to perform Blake Morgan's new work, 'Polaris' at St Luke's United Methodist Church, Houston, TX. Blake writes: For centuries, Polaris (also known as the North Star or the Polar Star) has hung high in the night sky, serving mankind as a trustworthy point of reference; for navigation to lands afar, for inspiration as a symbol of steadfastness, and for illumination as we make or find home again. In this composition, the star itself is depicted musically by the repetition of a Middle C — flickering in and out of focus, gradually growing brighter and then fading again, sometimes unseen or unheard, but ever constant. This particular note has always fascinated me; it is one of the only unison pitches shared between the standard singing/speaking registers of all four choral voice parts. This repeating Middle C is not always a consonant member of the harmony sounding beneath it; indeed, the “tonic” chord (G Major) and the steadily looping drone (the suspended 4th of it) are polarised from one another by nature, but it is that star itself — the continuous flickering of Middle C — which shepherds the listener through the journey of progressions and illuminates the way. This note serves as the compass and musical axis for the entire piece. Similarly, when I first read Andrea’s poem, I was struck immediately by the unique portrait of “home” she paints; it is not always a place or a person, nor is it confined to being a physical thing at all. Home can be a feeling — a sensation we take with us to any corner of the world. Sometimes we just need to search the sky for our very own North Star, and follow the glow. “... home is wherever I sail / Beneath your sight.” The work sets a new text by Andrea Haines: TEXT Polaris The celestial compass gleaming bright So I may go travel and strive Even by night. Polaris Here, a steadfast consort I behold A glittering eye of the heav’ns Usher my soul. Polaris Lending mesmerising winks of light So home is wherever I sail Beneath your sight. My Polaris. Sharing my piece Werther. The inspiration for this piece is novel by Johann Wolfgang Goethe “The Sorrows of Young Werther”. The novel presents a romantic protagonist. Werther in some sense is a subjective reflection of Goethe’s own self. I did not literally followed the novel. I wanted to create my own story using Werther. So, Werther is Werther, all his characteristics are the same in my musical piece as in Goethe’s “Werther”. For my musical piece, I wanted to create situation as if Werther is looking in the mirror before suicide and tries to understand himself. As in novel, Werther usually spends his days feeling everything in extremes. When he is happy in something, even something seemingly minuscule, he is overjoyed by it. When he is saddened by something (or someone), he is inconsolable. Each disappointment pushes him nearer and nearer to the edge, of which Werther himself seems to be aware and almost welcoming. So, I wanted to paint a situation, where he is realizing and analyzing everything, where he tries to convince himself not to do what he did, but loses his sane self, because in that moment for him everything becomes pointless. I added mirror In this case, because first of all, physically, mirrors reflect light and thus reflect the world around us. Spiritually, light has symbolic attachment to illumination, awareness and wisdom etc. Therefore, in term of spiritual symbolism, mirrors reflect truth. In my piece, Werther is looking in the mirror before suicide to perceive himself, to stay sane, but from this mirror he is seeing the truth – his own shadow who is speaking to him and convincing him to kill himself. I think that every person has a will to be alive and to live. So, for my piece I wanted to show the listener that deep down Werther wants to live. But unfortunately, his own shadow and reflection from mirror is convincing him to kill himself. I chose solo piece, even though technically here are two characters – Werther and his own shadow, his inner self. I chose Bass-clarinet, because for me it corresponds perfectly to Werther and his shadow. In piece, you can’t really divide shadow and main character. #werther #goethe

It was one of those nights, wasn't it?🍸🍺🍾 (still headed home, are we?) 😯😆🤐 .. Good Morning .. 🌞 (or Afternoon in the UK/EUR) (or Evening in Asia) It doesn't really matter, does it? *Nope 🤣 .. So, to continue the rest of my T8 story from Friday, I think? (if you didn't catch it, scroll down) Because it's a good music business tale. To bring you up to speed, we are talking about Tate McRae and how it looks like she's destined for major stardom. .. If you haven't heard of her yet, don't worry you will. I want to take a minute though, and talk about what happens sometimes to a label when they have a great artist. .. In this case, her album was already finished and the label (RCA Records) was literally telling her to stop writing any more new music.. ("Greedy" was blazing up the charts..) .. Now here's where the story gets interesting. Tate (stylized as T8) doesn't listen, and goes into the studio anyway and cuts this entirely new finished song in like *60 minutes..🏆 (Ayelet Schiffman, I hear you laughing) 😂 .. See, the Promotion Dept. budgets for new singles these days, are very finite. There's not this endless supply of 'financial fairy dust' that they can sprinkle all over a new artist until she/he breaks or the song finds success. (this makes 'Promo' a tough job, today) However in this case, if you ask me, they were kind of between a rock and a hard place. .. Because, this song is literally almost hypnotic. ("Greedy" was fire, no doubt..) But, if you ask me I think *this one was an *amazing song and really kind of a missed opportunity, TBH (Why?) .. Well, cuz the 'funky cowgirl' vibe is giving!! 🐎🏆 (It is? YES, Fool..) 😯😆 .. Also, if you ask me they picked the wrong title. The chorus chants, "Kisses To My Exes" who don't give a s**t.. 😯🤣🥇 (I won't spoil the rest, *CLICK on it y'all) .. But, don't be surprised if you start shimmering and sparkling and dancing around your office, your studio or your dirty ass apartment.. 😮🙃🤣 (so put in your earbuds & clean that s*** up) 😆🎧📻😂 You're Welcome, Korey Wells ..
