    Il volume prende in esame la collezione di racconti autobiografici di Italo Calvino "Passaggi obbligati", edita postuma nel 1990 come La strada di San Giovanni. Pur rimasta incompiuta, la raccolta costituisce un unicum nella narrativa calviniana: per il suo genere sperimentale, a metà tra testimonianza e saggistica, per il suo metodo, dei cosiddetti "esercizi di memoria", e per la sua aspirazione a realizzare un'autobiografia impossibile di un sé presente e di un sé assente. La ricostruzione critica dell'unità originaria e della struttura concettuale dell'opera ambisce a collocarne i testi, pubblicati come entità separate, nell'ambito di una più ampia e organica ricerca di Calvino sulla memoria e sull'identità. Allo stesso tempo, l'analisi dei racconti di "Passaggi obbligati" ("La strada di San Giovanni", "Autobiografia di uno spettatore", "Ricordo di una battaglia", "La poubelle agréée" e "Dall'opaco") offre - nel loro contatto con fenomeni coevi come la cinematografia di Fellini, la narrativa resistenziale o la sperimentazione postmoderna - un originale contributo alla lettura della cultura italiana del secondo dopoguerra.
