2022 GMC Canyon Reviews Summary

Compared to full-size models, midsize pickups offer buyers the convenience of a truck at a more budget-friendly price. Sure, you sacrifice a bit in the way of interior space and capability, but for many buyers, the smaller footprint and increased efficiency make these midsize offerings more livable.

The GMC Canyon—corporate cousin to the Chevrolet Colorado but with a more premium look and feel—gets a couple of changes for 2022. A new Denali Black Edition equipment package joins the options list, and the High Elevation package has been renamed Elevation Premium.

The 2022 GMC Canyon is available in four trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali. We drove the off-road-focused AT4 model for this review.

2023 Ford Maverick Reviews Summary

And for year two, it’s got more news of its own: The Tremor package previously seen on the Ford Ranger, F-150, and Super Duty joins their little sibling’s lineup.

Look and feel
2022 GMC Canyon

2023 Ford Maverick
8/10

The 2022 GMC Canyon presented a premium aesthetic, especially in its Denali trim, which was adorned with a unique chrome grille, 20-inch diamond-cut machined alloy wheels, and a luxurious interior featuring heated and ventilated perforated leather seats. The Denali's cabin was further enhanced with open-pore Ash wood trim and a Bose premium audio system, creating an upscale environment. Even the rugged AT4 off-road version maintained a sense of luxury with features like a black chrome grille, LED signature lighting, and premium heated leather seats. The Canyon's overall material quality exceeded expectations for its class, offering a blend of ruggedness and refinement.

In contrast, the 2023 Ford Maverick maintained its distinctive look with a blocky front end and headlights, and the Tremor package added off-road flair with blacked-out logos and unique color accents. The Maverick's interior was utilitarian, with a lot of hard plastic, but it offered a surprising amount of space and comfort. The Tremor package added a sporty touch with special wheels and accents, while the base model provided a straightforward, functional design. Despite its simplicity, the Maverick's interior was practical and offered a highbrow look with its heathered Black Onyx seats and blue-tinted plastic elements.

The 2022 GMC Canyon offered a range of powertrains, including a 200-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 308-hp 3.6-liter V6, and a 181-hp 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine with 369 pound-feet of torque. The V6 and turbodiesel engines had a maximum tow rating of 7,700 pounds with the Trailering package. The Canyon's V6 engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, provided abundant power and smooth shifting. The AT4 version, equipped with off-road features like 31-inch Wrangler Duratrac tires and a special suspension, offered solid handling and off-road capability.

The 2023 Ford Maverick stood out with its standard hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to deliver 191 horsepower. The hybrid came with a CVT and front-wheel drive, while the 2.0-liter, 250-hp EcoBoost engine offered an eight-speed automatic transmission and optional all-wheel drive. The Tremor package introduced Ford's "Advanced 4WD" system, enhancing off-road adaptability. The Maverick's EcoBoost engine provided 277 lb-ft of torque, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow Package, though the Tremor package reduced towing capacity to 2,000 pounds.

The 2022 GMC Canyon offered versatility with its extended cab and 6'2" bed or a crew cab with either a 5'2" or 6'2" bed. The crew cab provided ample space for rear-seat passengers, while the extended cab was less accommodating. The Canyon's seats were comfortable and supportive, with power adjustments and heating available. The vehicle's design allowed for easy entry and exit, and the cargo bed featured two-tier loading and 13 tie-down points for convenience.

The 2023 Ford Maverick, with the Tremor package, was slightly longer but maintained consistent legroom across models. The gas engine models offered 42.8 inches of front legroom and 36.9 inches in the second row, while the hybrid had slightly less rear legroom. The Maverick's interior was practical, with options to upgrade from the base plastic steering wheel and manual-adjust seats. The Luxury Package added heated elements and power adjustments, enhancing comfort and functionality.

The AT4 added a wireless charging pad, while the Denali included navigation and a high-definition rearview camera. The Canyon also offered Amazon Alexa Built-In, SiriusXM satellite radio, a WiFi hotspot, and OnStar telematics. The infotainment system was user-friendly, and the Bose audio system provided excellent sound quality.

The 2023 Ford Maverick featured an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with basic graphics, Bluetooth, wired Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. FordPass Connect offered a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The Lariat trim added a 6.5-inch LED driver-information display, additional USB ports, and a power-sliding rear window. The Lariat's Luxury Package included an eight-speaker B&O sound system, wireless charging pad, and Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system, enhancing the Maverick's tech offerings.

The Driver Alert package, available on higher trims, included forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking assistance. The Canyon received mixed safety ratings, with four stars from NHTSA and a "Good" rating from IIHS in most crash tests, but it lacked some modern safety technologies.

The 2023 Ford Maverick came standard with Ford's Co-Pilot 360 suite, offering automatic high beams, pre-collision assist, and a rearview camera. Additional safety features included adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and blind-spot monitoring. The Maverick earned a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and received high marks from IIHS for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, though it had some areas for improvement.
