RM20 million Federal Highway bike lane upgrade at 43% progress, to be completed in August this year

The FT002 Federal Highway motorcycle lane upgrade that was announced in August last year is currently at 43% progress, and is expected to be completed by August this year, according to works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

The RM20 million allocation for upgrading works on the Federal Highway motorcycle lane was part of Rolling Plan 5 under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12) that ended last year. The high volume of users along the Federal Highway route had raised concerns that some motorcyclists were entering the main highway lanes, thus increasing the risk of accidents and endangering road users, he said.

Spanning 48 km in both directions, the upgrade project covers seven km in the Klang district, while the area with the largest coverage is in the Petaling district with 41 km. Upgrading works include road resurfacing, tunnel repairs, road barrier replacement, bridge railing repairs, trimming of trees, and the installation of signboards and warning signs.

The Federal Highway motorcycle lane upgrade project is presently focused on drainage and drain upgrading works, as several black spots have been identified to be frequently hit by flash floods during the monsoon season, Nanta said.

Meanwhile, an allocation of RM6 million has been set aside specifically for the installation of integrated solar LED street lights to improve visibility and safety for its users at night, said the works minister.

The government hopes that more motorcyclists would use the dedicated lane once upgrading works are completed, and avoid entering the main highway lanes, and the works ministry has identified several other motorcycle lanes in urban areas for future upgrading works, the works minister said. “We hope this will help reduce accidents and fatalities involving motorcyclists,” Nanta said.

But 70% of all motorcycle traffic on Fed Highway skip these motorcycle lanes completely and brazenly zip in between car traffic on the main lanes.. Oh, and please don’t honk at them, ya.. they are Lords and Kings of the roads, will stare and show you the finger. Sorry, “tuan”…

Yeah la. This will all be a huge waste of money if there is no enforcement like there used to be until the late 1980’s.

  • Law enforcement have to be strict and tight on motorcycles using roads designed solely for cars, like those in Kesas and Federal Highway, else such upgrade defeat the purpose as many won’t use.
