Disregarding traffic signals and pedestrian crossings can result in motorists facing penalties affecting their driving licences, including suspension. This is according to Johor road transport department (JPJ) director Zulkarnain Yasin, who said offenders can be called up by the department to have their statements recorded under Section 114 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“This provision allows enforcement officers to require motorists to provide information or explanations during investigations. If found guilty, summonses will be issued,” he told NST. Zulkarnain added that offenders can be issued compounds of up to RM300, and if taken to court, may face fines of up to RM2,000.
Failure to comply with traffic lights is a serious offence as it contributes to demerit points under the Kejara system. Zulkarnain warned that licence holders who accumulate 20 or more demerit points risk suspension or revocation of their driving licences if offences persist.
Zulkarnain’s comments come following two recent viral incidents involving school zones and zebra crossings. In one of the incidents that reportedly took place near a primary school in Taman Universiti, a boy was hit as a result of a vehicle failing to stop before a zebra crossing.
The other viral incident also involved students at a zebra crossing, where a car did not stop despite the traffic light being red and continued on with the students crossing midway. Earlier this month, a woman was struck by a motorcyclist while using a zebra crossing on Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, with the incident captured on video (posted below).

Talk is cheap. Just allow road user to submit video anonymously, without having the possibility to attend court. Not everyone is so free.
After this publicity to educate, JPJ please take stern and consistent actions! You JP can make a difference… i think we always have had this issues but social media prevalence have made it as though it is a new issues. Nevertheless, JPJ, it’s time to act consistently…
They should look into making the punishment heavier, most Malaysian driver disrespect zebra crossing as if no one would ever use it. Even when someone is using a zebra crossing, they show no sign of slowing down, just keep on going hoping that pedestrians will make it safely.
LOL Too many didn’t even know what’s purpose of zebra crossing! Thanks to yesteryears of guaranteed passed driving licence project produced so many non-qualified motorists and motorcyclist on the road endangering others.
Can have, but will they get it?! The questions is not “CAN THEY GET TIS AND TAT” and “HOW/WILL U/ HAVE U EVER care and get the rules right or taking care of those who BREAK IT or DOESNT GIVE A DAMN about it!”
this has always been the case and issue when it comes to malaysia implementation. TALK BIG/TALK MUCH/TALK BEAUTIFULLY but ACT SMALL/ACT LESS/ACT SHITTY
this is a MUST! adhere to road traffic rules and regulations or face license suspension or termination, because during the license application, we already made known to DO and DON’T
Implying they have a license in the first place. Even if you suspend their license not like they cant just ride their bike tomorrow morning lol.
Malaysian ignoring zebra crossing is an everyday thing… Sometimes I tried to cross cars even speed up , rev their engine hard and honked at me.. When I am driving, I slow down and let the some elderly pedestrian to cross cross ( no traffic light installed) Cars behind long honked me and some even rev their engine behind . Can’t understand why Malaysian have such mentality…
When I was in Europe and Japan , even when there is no zebra crossing, I attempt to cross the road at commercial and residential area almost all cars will slow down and let me cross.
Not effective . Many don’t even have a license in the first place. Unpaid summons without repercussion is common in Malaysia.
What is the point? Most drivev with no license, road tax, insurance anyway.
Msians love to challenge the law bcoz the law always fail.
