Prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced Malaysia will introduce a work-from-home (WFH) policy for ministries, government agencies, statutory bodies and government-linked companies (GLCs) beginning April 15 this year.
In a special address last night (April 1), Anwar said the measure is aimed at reducing fuel consumption and ensuring a sustainable supply of energy for the country in light of the prolonged conflict in West Asia. Anwar added that further details would be announced in due course – the move echoes initiatives taken by some ASEAN countries.
He also said recently that the government has oil companies to ensure Malaysia’s fuel supply remains sufficient for about a month. With the Budi Madani RON 95 (Budi95) fuel subsidy programme in place, RON 95 petrol continues to be priced at RM1.99 a litre, although the monthly quota provided to eligible Malaysians has been reduced to 200 litres – from 300 litres – starting April 1. The Budi95 and Budi Diesel programmes are said to cost the government RM4 billion a month.
Anwar had previously advised the private sector to implement temporary WFH arrangements, although Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman was cited as saying a WFH policy is unlikely to reduce fuel consumption.
