BMW recalls about 575k vehicles globally over issue with starter motor – 3, 4 and 5 Series, X models in list

A global recall has been issued by BMW over a potential issue with the starter motor in more than half a million vehicles produced from July 2020 to July 2022, in which the part can make the vehicle harder to start, or not start at all.

Over time, a high number of starting operations can result in increased wear in the unit’s magnetic switch, resulting in the starting issues. In rare cases, this could lead to a potential short circuit and a fire risk, and the possibility of this hazard is what prompted the recall to be made, as BMW Blog reports.

Citing several news sources, the website said that around 575,000 vehicles are impacted by the action, and these span a number of models and variants. These include the G42 2 Series Coupé, 3 Series (G20 sedan, G21 touring, G28 China long-wheelbase version), 4 Series (G22 coupe, G23 convertible, G26 Gran Coupe), 5 Series (G30 sedan, G31 touring), G32 6 Series Gran Turismo and 7 Series (G11, G12).

Also included in the list are the G01 X3, G02 X4, G05 X6 and the G29 Z4 , which means the mechanically identical Toyota GR Supra should also be covered by the action. The recall covers 28,582 vehicles in Germany, while a similar action in the US involves 87,394 units. The corrective measure is of course the replacement of the starter motor, and in some cases, a replacement of the 12V started battery as well.

Locally, BMW Group Malaysia says it is currently ascertaining the actual number of vehicles affected by the recall. In a brief statement, the company said that its authorised dealer partners will get in touch directly with customers affected by the recall campaign, and assured customers that their vehicles remain safe.
