BMW Alpina is now a standalone brand under the BMW Group as of January 1, 2026, the German automaker announced recently. This comes following BMW’s announcement that it had acquired Alpina back in March 2022, although things remained status quo until the long-standing cooperation agreement between both parties expired on December 31, 2025.
Prior to being absorbed, Alpina was founded and operated by the Bovensiepen family, with roots tracing back to 1962. The company’s main focus is modifying BMWs and is so closely tied to the automaker that it was recognised as an automotive manufacturer by the German Ministry of Transport in 1983.
An Alpina’s birth process starts with fine tuning the engine at the company’s facility in Buchloe, Germany. This is then delivered to the BMW plant to be married to the car’s body before being returned for other modifications relating to the interior, transmission, suspension and more. Every single Alpina is fitted with its individual production plaque in the interior along with an Alpina-specific VIN.
Based on the official release, BMW Alpina will look operate as it always has, although its parent indicates that the initial focus will be on brand activation. BMW Alpina follows a similar path as Maybach, which became a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz in 2015.
