After launching the JAC T9 diesel and EV in March – the latter already Malaysia’s first battery-electric pick-up truck available to private buyers – Malaysian distributor Evolvelectric Motors is gearing up for another first. It’s teased the JAC T9 PHEV on Facebook, so it looks like it won’t be long now before the country gets its first plug-in hybrid pick-up truck (where are you, BYD Shark?).
Never before, we’re quite sure, has one pick-up truck model been offered with so many different powertrains in this country – all that’s left now is for us to get a pure petrol T9, a non-plug-in hybrid T9 and a hydrogen T9. We jest, of course.
The world first saw the JAC T9 PHEV at this year’s Melbourne Motor Show. According to Drive, it’s got a 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine, two electric motors, a 523 PS/1,000 Nm total output, a 31.2-kWh LFP battery and a 100 km EV range. It’s not even on sale in Australia nor South Africa yet, so details are still scarce, but will Malaysia beat those big ute/bakkie markets to the punch?
The JAC T9 diesel and EV are respectively priced at RM120k and RM200k in Malaysia. How much do you think this PHEV will ask for, and how much do you think is fair?

The power and torque for the BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) vary by model and generation,
