2020 Toyota Corolla gets new 9-inch Display Audio – Android Auto, Apple CarPlay support; RM3,000 more

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has given the Toyota Corolla a slight update for 2020 by introducing a new Display Audio head unit only for the range-topping 1.8G variant. With this revision, the 1.8G now retails at RM139,888 on-the-road without insurance, which is RM3,000 more than before.

The head unit appears to be similar to the one found in the Fortuner and Innova, with a nine-inch touchscreen as well as support for Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Miracast. No change for the base 1.8E variant, as it retains the same 6.8-inch system without the aforementioned features.

As such, the 1.8E’s pricing remains the same at RM128,888 and there’s no option to install the Display Audio system for an additional cost. The list of optional accessories remains the same, including a 3D panoramic view monitor (RM2,700), front and rear digital video recorders (RM1,100) and Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) for RM1,450.

The rest of the specifications for both variants remains unchanged from before, as you still get a 2ZR-FE 1.8 litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 139 PS (137 hp) and 173 Nm of torque. This is paired with a Shiftmatic CVT that drives the front wheels, along with two drive modes (Sport and Eco).

The 1.8E gets automatic, manual-levelling halogen headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels (with 205/55 series tyres), LED taillights, a reverse camera as well as front and rear parking sensors and fog lamps as standard equipment.

Other items include keyless entry and start, a 4.2-inch TFT LCD instrument cluster display, single-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, a 6.8-inch touchscreen head unit with six speakers, black fabric upholstery and an eight-way powered driver’s seat.

The 1.8G adds on LED projected headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels (with 225/45 series tyres), a seven-inch Optitron instrument display, dual-zone climate control, black leather upholstery, an electronic parking brake (with auto hold), paddle shifters, rear side window sunshades, a Qi wireless charger, a 3D panoramic view monitor, VTS and digital video recorders.

In terms of safety kit, both the 1.8E and 1.8G come with seven airbags (front, side curtain and driver knee), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), ABS with EBD and brake assist, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), tyre pressure monitoring system, and Isofix child seat anchors (rear outer seats).

The 1.8G goes one further with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety and driver assistance systems. These include Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist & Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), (Automatic High Beam (AHB) and Blind Spot Monitor (BSM).

  • 3k also include the VTS for G spec, with one year subscription.

    • 3K only for upgrading big screeen AV unit. And how can VTS comes with one year subscription??

Thumb up 10 Thumb down 2
      • I was merely stating the fact, VTS was optional previously even for G spec. 3k worth or not u can judge urself. U can have a better head unit out there with 3k, but this is factory fitted, peace of mind….

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0
    • Why only comes with one year subscription u have to ask UMWT. Haha. The VTS is quoted as an optional accessory for E spec now, at RM1,200 with 250 subscription fee for each year.

Finally, they updated their head unit. Overall, everything, it is perfect. Even though, price is more similar as Civic and Mazda 3, Corolla is still better buy

  • Pay Rm3000 and you still get the unsightly USB cable connect direct to that headunit. Why can’t they make a panel connector that could be place under the dash stack. This is so cheap looking.

Thumb up 12 Thumb down 36
    • Exactly. I don’t really like Honda now but as a current owner I appreciate where they located the USB port for Android Auto and Apple Carplay. I can locate my phone discreetly without wires messing about.

I don’t expect any “good” from Toyota Mesia. Everything you need, you have to pay, pay, pay….

You want their “Display Audio head unit”? Pay RM3000 first.

The bottom line is, Toyota is never a “good value buy” to start off with.

Toyota has done their better job, especially for proton too by listening all the feedbacks after complaining that umw toyota didnt give VSC but giving 2 airbags while Proton service is bad that was went back in 2015, unlike now. So lets all kudos to Proton and Toyota. Will reign again. Not too forget that hyundai will change to better design with more futurisitic soon.

  • That’s charging quite a lot more for just a HU upgrade…

And the location of the USB port should be more discreet IMO. This looks so after market…

UMW tend to give aftermarket HU for every single car sold in Malaysia except new camry. It’s horrible and fugly. Thai Corolla HU is much better with better usb port placement.

pay more just for a headunit. worst that the car is RM140K and it is underpowered. easily a civic turbo can outrun a corolla. at least a civic turbo, u pay RM140K for a car that has a power of a 2.4L.

    • Just look at HRV headunit. Everyone are already unhappy with HRV headunit and they complaint to Honda Malaysia but not action. Worst still, even service and quality is so disappointment from the honda owners but their management have no action to be taken. By the way, they give outdated specs for honda models but no Honda Sensing

Finally, a better HU, but phone cable is still exposed. I dont mind the power diff. with Civic. Anyway, both are CVT cars and they suck bigtime for sudden acceleration. Am not going to use for speeding but for the autonomous driving. Not the crappy-while-still-same-as-honda-sensing, I mean OpenPilot. OpenPilot keeps improving and thats why it is always benchmarked against Tesla’s autonomous driving. Booking the car and ordering OpenPilot soon!

  • Owned since nov 2019 on Jun 06, 2020 at 2:34 pm

Having owning the 1.8g variant since nov, here’s my thoughts. (A summary, will not recommend anyone to buy… unless all they care is the tech and resale value.)
    1. The handling vs power is a mismatch, slow but aggressive handling. A hybrid variant with instant low end torque would be nice. Turbo that kicks in at higher rpm wouldn’t be much use here because of the aggressive stance it has, the sensation of both sluggish take off paired with precision handling is rather unsettling and mentally annoying after a while.
    2. Kinda sporty, kinda practical, kinda comfortable. The car is all over the place, not sporty enough (point 1), not practical enough to go against previous generations of altis (a lot of possible compartments and cup holder spaces unutilised in a partially claustrophobic interior), not comfortable enough as a daily driver (back pain in long traffic jams or butt pain on bumpy roads). I understand the ‘not boring’ mandate their president wants but NOT excelling at anything really puts the car in a compromised spot. The saving grace for it now is the expected resale value and the safety tech.
    3. Safety tech especially their drivers assist is amazing. Yes, the car can drive itself on highways with clear road marking, the steering corrections and the radar allows me to just rest my hands and let it self drive. In congested roads it works well too, but will brake hard when slowing down from 40kmph to 0kmph plus it will not register if cars from next lane cuts into your lane when there’s less than 2 car space in front.
    4. Built in tyre pressure monitor, this surprised myself and the tyre shop I frequent. Anyone wants to buy a TPMS off me?
    5. Horrible for tall passengers. 176cm in the back seat and your head presses tightly on the roof, 176cm driver and front passenger means no space for rear facing child seat in the rear. Hard suspension means bumpy ride for passengers (exceptionally bad when sick). Overall, I would argue this is a drivers car but the lack of sportiness (point 1) make it a harder sell.

I hope this helps you decide if the car is for you. And as I mentioned already, if you want a semi self driving car and good resale value, this is the car to get, otherwise do weigh the cons mentioned and if you can live with it as your daily driver. Thanks for reading and hope you have a pleasant day.
