New fourth-gen Suzuki Jimny confirmed for Thailand

New fourth-gen Suzuki Jimny confirmed for Thailand

The new Suzuki Jimny has been confirmed for Thailand, according to Headlightmag. However, it is not certain yet if the compact 4×4 will be locally assembled in the Land of Smiles – where Suzuki has production facilities – or imported from Indonesia or Japan, the auto website adds.

The Jimny is quite a legend in the off-road world, a true 4×4 famed for its ability to go further down the trail than its size suggests. First unveiled last month, this all-new fourth-generation Jimny continues with a ladder frame; three angles, three-link rigid axle suspension with coil springs; and part-time 4WD with low range transfer gear (2H, 4H, 4L). Once again, this is no crossover – the Vitara covers that segment.

The new Jimny comes with a new “x-member” and two additional cross members for further reinforcement and increased torsional rigidity. The approach angle of 37 degrees, ramp breakover angle of 28 degrees and departure angle of 49 degrees are all ample, and allow the Suzuki to climb over obstacles without scraping its underbody.

Two body styles are available in Japan, one slightly more slimline and minimalist than the other. That’s the Jimny, and the one with the chunkier bumpers and wide over-fenders is the Jimny Sierra.

The slimline Jimny is to keep the 4×4 within kei car size boundaries, and it’s 155 mm shorter, 170 mm narrower and 5 mm lower than the still-compact Sierra, which will be the regular Jimny for global markets. Both share the same 2,250 mm wheelbase and 377 litre luggage space, which is 53 litres larger than before.

The kei car Jimny is powered by the regulation 660cc turbocharged triple with 64 PS and 96 Nm. Japanese buyers can choose from a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic.

The Japanese Sierra and the rest of the world gets a 1.5 litre engine to replace the previous 1.3 litre unit. This 102 PS/130 Nm unit delivers stronger torque at all rpm than before. Despite the increased displacement, it is smaller in size and 15% lighter than before. The transmission choice is also between 5MT and 4AT.
