Electric automaker Tesla has taken its SUV, the Model X to the runway at Melbourne Airport in Australia for a spot of towing. As the location suggests, the payload here is an aircraft, namely the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The electric vehicle towed the 286,600-pound (130-tonne) airliner 987 feet (300 metres) for a new Guinness world record of the heaviest tow by a production electric passenger vehicle.
A similar feat was attempted with a diesel vehicle last year, where a Porsche Cayenne S Diesel towed an Airbus A380. Here, the Tesla’s feat outdoes Porsche’s effort for distance, where Tesla’s 300-metre pull plays Porsche’s 42 m, however the A380 is what can be considered an entire size up on the 787 Dreamliner at 285 tonnes.
The Model X used for this feat was the P100D variant, which on its own can sprint from 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) in 2.9 seconds. The accelerative attributes of the Tesla Model S were demonstrated in 2016, also with Australian airline Qantas, where the EV took part in a drag race with a Boeing 737-800.
