Nissan Serena e-Power – EV MPV with range extender

The Nissan Serena e-Power has just been unveiled ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show. It’s a new variation of the Japanese MPV, featuring the brand’s innovative range-extended electric drive system that debuted on the Note e-Power last year.

While no exact details have been announced just yet, the Serena e-Power will use an electric motor as its primary source of drive. But instead of relying on a large battery pack that needs to be recharged, e-Power employs a small range extender petrol engine to charge the battery.

This means that owners will have to refuel rather than charge the vehicle, and it also allows the use of a much smaller battery pack as to not compromise interior packaging. The petrol engine is used solely to charge the battery pack, and is not connected to the wheels at all.

Nissan claims the Serena e-Power will offer “the powerful, responsive acceleration of an electric-drive vehicle, along with above-its-class quietness and excellent fuel efficiency.”

The electric-drive Serena gets minimal unique visual cues: blue accents on the front grille, LED taillights and aerodynamic aluminium wheels. The blue highlights extend to the interior too, which features captain seats in the second row.

It’s scheduled to go on sale in Japan in Q2 next year, complete with Nissan’s latest ProPilot single-lane autonomous driving technology.
