Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has officially introduced the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+, giving the most powerful W213 E-Class variant its local debut in Edition 1 form earlier this evening. The limited edition version joins the S as the two models that go on sale here, with prices starting from RM998,888, on-the-road without insurance. The Edition 1, meanwhile, goes for RM1,088,888.

Variant specific exterior cues include a new front end, led by a new bumper design and a new radiator grille dressed with twin louvres in silver chrome, vertical black struts and AMG lettering. The front end also gets an extra front splitter and a front skirt styled along jet wing lines.

The new bumper also brings along reworked front fenders, which are 17 mm wider to cater for the increased track width and the adoption of larger wheels, and there’s also a new bonnet hood, inset between the bumper and fenders like on a coupe.

Less happening at the rear, with dedicated elements being made up of a body-coloured boot spoiler lip, a rear apron and a triple-fin diffuser, along with chrome-plated twin tailpipe finishers.

As standard, the E 63 S comes fitted with 20-inch five twin-spoke light alloy wheels in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, and it also gets red brake calipers with ‘AMG’ lettering (an optional AMG Carbon Ceramic brake system is also available for the car). The Edition 1, meanwhile, gets 20-inch cross-spoke forged alloy wheel finished in matt black with a high-gloss polished rim flange.

Other model specific items for the Edition 1 include a designo selenite grey magno exterior shade (also available in designo night black magno, as seen on the launch model) and high-gloss black details for its AMG bodystyling kit as well as other items such as mirror housings and beltline trim strip. The variant also gets dressed with a Night package and dynamic stripe decals on the side sill panels.

The interior, meanwhile, boasts yellow topstitching on the black AMG Exclusive nappa leather upholstery as well as on the upper dashboard, AMG floor mats and on a three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel, which is trimmed in black Dinamica microfibre, complete with ‘Edition 1’ badging.

As for the E 63 S, highlights include AMG Performance seats featuring integrated head restraints adorned with a stitched AMG emblem, nappa leather covering for the instrument panel and beltlines, with seat belts and seat piping done in crystal grey. A widescreen multi-function two-monitor display and an IWC-designed analogue clock is also standard fit.

Motive power is provided by a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8, the M178 being paired with an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed sports transmission (featuring a wet start off-clutch in place of the torque converter), with a new AMG Performance 4Matic+ fully variable all-wheel drive system putting the power to the ground.

The latter features an electromechanically-controlled coupling, which connects the permanently-driven rear axle variably to the front axle, with the best possible torque distribution calculated continuously according to the driving conditions and driver’s input. Essentially, this allows the car to shift from traction-oriented all-wheel drive to purely rear-wheel drive, depending on conditions.

Output numbers for the mill in the E 63 S application are 604 hp (612 PS) at 5,750-6,500 rpm and 850 Nm from 2,500-4,500 rpm, and performance figures include a 0-100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds and an electronically-governed top speed of 250 km/h. That on the Edition 1 mirrors this, since the base car is an E 63 S, with variant dedicated equipment added on.

An AMG Dynamic Select drive programme offers four drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual), and there’s also a Race mode for track use. The last provides access to a drift mode function for more adventurous drivers, and when activated the car runs as only in rear-wheel drive guise until the mode is switched off. Elsewhere, the new E 63’s Racestart function has also been reworked and is simpler to operate.

The car also comes with an AMG sports suspension that is based on the automaker’s Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension but has been completely re-engineered for its use here. There’s also aa four-link front axle utilising forged aluminium components as well as an entirely reworked rear axle to handle the car’s increased dynamics.

Other notable bits include AMG-specific wheel carriers, dynamic engine mounts and dedicated elastokinematic tuning, an AMG Sport electromechanical speed-sensitive steering and an electronically-controlled rear differential lock.
