What do we have here? Photos of the facelifted Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 have surfaced on the Mercedes-Benz CLA Club Malaysia Facebook page, indicating that the revised high-performance four-door coupé will be launched soon – likely at the same time as the cooking model. Such a launch would mirror of the facelifted A-Class range, which was introduced in both regular and AMG flavours at the same time.
Changes include new LED High Performance headlights (replacing the current xenon projectors), a revised front fascia with a prominent AMG “A-wing” air intake design, redesigned LED tail lights graphics and a new rear bumper design with a more aggressive rear diffuser, integrating quad tailpipes.
As with the current car, Malaysian-market models look to sport the AMG Aerodynamics Package, consisting of a larger front splitter, front flics and fins at the corners of the rear bumpers – the latter being new for the facelift. There’s also a Night Package that throws in gloss black highlights, including the wing mirrors.
There are two models seen here – the Jupiter Red example is fitted with new 18-inch AMG cross-spoke alloy wheels, while the designo magno polar silver version comes with the same black multispoke alloys as the current CLA 45 – so it’s likely that both wheel options will be offered here. The matte silver paint on the latter car is interesting, too, as it’s the first time we’ve seen a local-spec car with the finish.
Inside, minimal revisions had already been introduced in a running update last year, including a new steering wheel design and flatter face buttons for the audio system. The facelift, therefore, adds even fewer changes, including chrome-edged switchgear, a redesigned instrument cluster and a new rotary knob to select the drive modes on the AMG Dynamic Select system.
Kit should remain identical to the current car, including real carbon fibre dashboard trim, COMAND Online infotainment and navigation system, an eight-inch Media Display with a glossy glass cover, Thermotronic dual-zone automatic climate control, Park Pilot and the excellent AMG Performance bucket seats.
As on the facelifted A 45, the 2.0 litre M133 turbocharged four-cylinder engine has been breathed on with a reconfigured valve assembly, timing and turbocharger. This boosts output by an extra 21 hp and 25 Nm, so maximum output now stands at 381 hp at 6,000 rpm and 475 Nm of torque between 2,250 and 5,000 rpm.
All that power is sent through a revised seven-speed AMG Speedshift DCT (dual clutch transmission) with shorter gear ratios and quicker changes, while an AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel drive system is standard-fit as before. The 0-100 km/h sprint is now done and dusted in just 4.2 seconds – 0.4 seconds faster than before – and the top speed remains electronically limited to 250 km/h.
As for what’s under the skin, expect the CLA 45 to get the same optional mechanical upgrades as the facelifted A 45, including AMG Ride Control adaptive dampers as well as an extra-hardcore Race mode on the AMG Dynamic Select system.
