In early May, Ford revealed the second-generation of its 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 petrol engine that will make its way into the 2017 Ford F-150 pick-up truck. The Blue Oval has now released the official power figures of the mill, and it appears the carmaker was being modest previously.
Compared to the previous 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6, the new engine sees a gain of 10 hp to 375 hp, while max torque is 637 Nm, a 68 Nm increase. Back in May, Ford claimed the new mill only provided an additional 40 Nm of torque from its predecessor, for a total of 610 Nm.
Among the upgrades to the engine include new turbochargers, a lighter turbine wheel (made out of the super alloy Mar-M-247) that delivers more boost, a lighter valvetrain, along with a new dual-direct and port fuel-injection system.
According to Ford, the 637 Nm torque figure is a segment best, beating all diesel- and petrol-powered competitors, including V8 engines that have nearly twice the displacement of the 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6. The Ford F-150 is also the first and only truck in its segment to offer a twin-turbo petrol engine in the US.
The new engine is paired exclusively to an all-new, Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the previous six-speed unit. The new gearbox offers improved acceleration and performance, and features three overdrive gears and a much wider ratio span (with drag-reduction actions). This helps to improve fuel economy on the highway, and also retain a best-in-class towing figure.
