It appears that the new Kejara demerit points system, a component of the Awareness Automated Safety System (AWAS), may not be launched in May 2016 as originally expected. Instead, the enforcement system may only become active in August after the Hari Raya festive season.

“The Road Transport Department (JPJ) just concluded its public feedback on Kejara at the end of March. The next step is to amend the Road Transport Act 1987 in the Dewan Rakyat after the Transport Ministry fine tunes the final details,” a source told The Sun.

The source said the delay also includes the time that will be taken for further deliberation on the matter in the Dewan Negara. In our recent report, Transport minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he hoped to table the Bill amending the Road Transport Act during the upcoming Dewan Rakyat session from May 16-26, 2016, as the current sitting ends on Thursday.

A few weeks prior, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi suggested that AWAS – a combination of the Automated Enforcement System (AES) and the Kejara demerit points system – will be implemented by May. Following this information, it appears that those plans are now moot.
