BMW US has issued a recall for a total of 6,073 vehicles comprising of its i3 electric car and several MINI Cooper models due to a manufacturing error of the affected vehicles’ front passenger side airbag. In the event of a crash, the airbag might not deploy properly to restrain the passenger as a result of the defect, increasing the risk of injury to the front seat passenger.
In a statement issued by the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the models affected by this recall include 923 units of the BMW i3 (2014 to 2015 model year).
As for the remaining 5,150 affected vehicles, they are comprised of the two-door MINI Cooper and Cooper S (2014 to 2016 model year); two-door MINI John Cooper Works (2015 to 2016 model year); and four-door MINI Cooper and Cooper S (2015 to 2016 model year).
According to BMW US, no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of this issue. Customers who own the affected vehicles will be contacted by the carmaker to bring their vehicles in, and have the defective airbags replaced at no extra charge.
The NHTSA also stated that the airbag supplier is indeed Takata, but has no relation to cases where faulty inflators caused metal shards to be spewed into the passenger cabin. According to BMW Malaysia, the cars here are not affected by this recall, but if customers wants further peace of mind, they can visit an authorised dealership for clarification.
