Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 AMG Coupe teased ahead of Detroit, GLE 450 AMG Coupe to star in Jurassic World

If you’re going to take the fight to the BMW X6, you might as well go all the way and take on the X6 M as well, right? That appears to be idea behind the new Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 AMG Coupe, teased through a video on Mercedes’ Facebook page ahead of its debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

Through the film, you can see that the GLE 63’s skin is pumped up more than even the fairly garang mid-range GLE 450 AMG. There’s the deeper, more aggressive front fascia with the AMG dual-bar grille, large air inlets and a F1-style front “wing”, while the rear features four prominent rhombus-shaped tailpipes.

No technical details have been released so far, but since the GLE Coupe is simply a low-slung version of the ML (which will be renamed the GLE when the facelift arrives later this year), we can expect the GLE 63 Coupe to continue to use the ML 63’s 525 PS/700 Nm 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8, rather than Mercedes-AMG’s new 4.0 litre unit used in the Mercedes-AMG GT and C 63.

In other news, Mercedes-Benz has also confirmed that the GLE 450 AMG Coupe will star in the upcoming fourth film of the Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World, as part of a longstanding partnership with Universal Pictures. Stuttgart’s machines first made their on-screen appearance in 1997 in the series’ second instalment – The Lost World: Jurassic Park – with the first ML. Kinda fitting to return with the ML’s offspring, eh?

Jurassic World

The new movie, which will be released right in time for the GLE Coupe’s mid-2015 market debut, will feature the first prototype of the GLE 450 AMG Coupe, hand-built specifically for the film. As filming commenced one-and-a-half-years before the car was unveiled last month, security on set had to be tightened against prying eyes, even in remote locations on O’ahu and Kaua’i in Hawaii, as well as on NASA terrain in New Orleans.

“Unveiling the new GLE Coupé in Jurassic World was a natural fit as we continue our relationship with Mercedes,” said Jurassic World producer Frank Marshall. “Audiences will find that the vehicles featured in the film lend themselves perfectly as the transportation of choice in the fully functioning international theme park we have created at Jurassic World.”
