VIDEO: BMW i8 teased; to be unveiled in Frankfurt

BMW has just released this short teaser video of the production BMW i8, which will make its global debut in a few days’ time at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Not much you can see here though, other than brief shots of the light clusters and door mirrors. We’ll bring you the full reveal when the time comes.

The i8 plug-in hybrid coupe’s technical details have already been confirmed last month, which you can read in full here. In short, it uses a 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine to run the rear wheels while strong electric motors feed power to the fronts.

Combined output is 357 hp and 570 Nm, and it gets to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, thanks to a lightweight all-carbon-fibre monocoque. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h. It can run up to 35 km and 120 km/h in full electric mode, and combined fuel economy is said to be under 2.5 litres per 100 km.

It’s the second model of BMW’s new i sub-brand, alongside the all-electric i3 that has been unveiled in full earlier in the year. Read Paul’s comprehensive run down of the BMW i3 here.
