US BMW dealers want something bigger than the X7

Being 5,151 mm long, 2,000 mm wide and 1,805 mm tall, with a 3,105 mm wheelbase, the BMW X7 is no small car, but you know how it is in super-size America. BMW National Dealer Forum chairman Kirk Cordill has told Automotive News in an interview that he believes dealers could benefit from something larger to properly compete against tower blocks like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Infiniti QX80.

The Escalade is the segment best-seller – in elongated ESV form, it’s a crazy 615 mm longer than BMW’s largest model, while having a 301-mm longer wheelbase. It’s also wider (2,060 mm) and taller (1,941 mm) than the X7, while having more than double the boot space with all seats up. The German car can take 326 litres behind the third row; the Yank tank can swallow 722 litres (or 1,175 litres if you get the ESV model).

Let’s explore possible avenues. Almost immediately after the X7’s 2018 birth, there were already reports that BMW was considering an X8. We even saw prototypes testing – but that then eventually became the XM super-SUV, which is hardly what we’re looking for here.

What about an X9? Munich has trademarked ‘iX9’ since 2017, but we haven’t heard a peep about such a vehicle since. Cordill, however, believes that BMW could utilise its Alpina brand for a new, bigger SUV. Will the carmaker rise to the occasion?
