Proton X90 MC 2026

  • 2026 Proton X90 MC – 323 units sold in March despite incomplete month, highest sales volume in over a year

2026 Proton X90 MC – 323 units sold in March despite incomplete month, highest sales volume in over a year

It looks like the recent massive reduction in kit – and a one-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating – hasn’t dented the appeal of the Proton X90. In fact, despite only effectively having half a month’s worth of sales since its March 11 launch, the national carmaker sold more units of the three-row SUV than it had in over a year.

Okay, so the actual figure of 323 units does not sound like much, but you’d have to go back to December 2024 to find a number that high (307 units). The repositioning in price surely has had a lot to do with it, with the X90 being up to RM37,000 less expensive at RM99,800 for the Lite, RM109,800 for the Prime and RM115,800 for the Prime X (all with a RM7,000 launch rebate).

This is despite the MC (minor change) giving the car a modern BHE15-EFZ 1.5 litre i-GT turbo four-cylinder engine, which replaces the old mild hybrid three-cylinder and makes 181 PS and 290 Nm of torque. Outside of the inherently smoother and quieter nature of the more balanced four-pot, Proton also claims lower maintenance costs thanks to a toothed timing chain and fuel consumption as low as 6.9 litres per 100 km.

Instead, the cuts came as a result of less kit – no 4G connectivity (so no app support or “Hi Proton” voice control), panoramic sunroof, Qi wireless charging or powered tailgate, although the X90 does finally gain wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (it was promised for the old one, but Proton reneged on this).

More blatant was the ditching of the X90’s entire suite of driver assists. Never mind that the car no longer gets Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features such as adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist, but you can no longer even get it with autonomous emergency braking. So stark was the contrast in safety kit that ASEAN NCAP even downgraded the original five-star rating.

In any case, the X90’s stronger sales performance provided a small contribution to Proton’s sales of 15,706 vehicles last month, up 2,140 units from a sluggish (by the company’s blockbuster 2026 standards) February. This led to a first-quarter figure of 49,140 units, its best since 2004.

  • 2026 Proton X90 MC – five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating downgraded to 1-star due to removal of ADAS

2026 Proton X90 MC – five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating downgraded to 1-star due to removal of ADAS

ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries) has announced it is downgrading the safety rating of the new Proton X90 MC to a one-star rating. For context, when the X90 was first launched back in May 2023, it received a five-star rating.

According to ASEAN NCAP, the reason for the downgrade is the lack of essential advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in the updated model. Previously, the X90 was offered with autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring and more.

However, the MC update stripped away all of that, with all three available variants not having any form of ADAS. This did not sit well with ASEAN NCAP, which said that under its 2021-2025 protocol, “a vehicle’s star rating is restricted if it performs poorly in any single category, ensuring all-round protection.”

“The removal of these technologies has caused the safety assist (SA) score to drop to a four-star level, while the motorcyclist safety (MS) category— which relies heavily on blind spot detection – has plummeted to a one-star rating. Consequently, the Proton X90’s overall rating is capped at one-star,” the assessment programme said in its release posted today.

2026 Proton X90 MC – five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating downgraded to 1-star due to removal of ADAS

The lack of ADAS (and other features) has resulted in a lower starting price by as much as RM30,000, with the X90 MC going for between RM99,800 and RM115,800 on-the-road without insurance. Under its visually unchanged exterior, there is a new turbocharged inline-four engine that replaces the previous three-cylinder unit with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

The director general of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Siti Zaharah binti Ishak, commented, “We deeply regret Proton’s decision to remove life-saving ADAS technologies from the new facelift model. To protect consumers and maintain the integrity of safety standards, we have no choice but to revoke the 2023 five-star rating.”

“This serves as a reminder to all manufacturers: safety is not a trade-off. Do not sacrifice proven safety technology for face-value luxuries like infotainment systems or leather upholstery,” she added.

This is not the first time that Proton has downgraded safety features. It removed the side airbags from the Exora in 2017, and it was never offered again until the MPV was discontinued. We should also point out that unlike the pre-MC X90, Proton did not communicate anything about safety ratings in its marketing materials.

  • 2026 Proton X90 MC launched – new 1.5T i-GT 4-cyl, no 48V mild-hybrid, priced RM30k lower, from RM99,800

    2026 Proton X90 MC launched – new 1.5T i-GT 4-cyl, no 48V mild-hybrid, priced RM30k lower, from RM99,800

Its arrival has been on the cards since it was spied late last year and then spotted again testing in January, and now, it’s finally here, with the wraps coming off the 2026 Proton X90 MC earlier this evening. The facelift for the three-row SUV comes nearly three years after it was introduced here in May 2023.

Unlike the Geely Haoyue, which it is based on, the refresh for the automaker’s third X series model doesn’t bring about the visual makeover the Haoyue L received last year. In fact, design-wise, the X90 MC is virtually untouched, with the same exterior as before, save a couple of very minor bits, of which new utility roof rails are one. The rails are not just dress-up items but fully-functioning units, capable of handling 75 kg of load.

The front and rear end remain as is, and given that the exterior doesn’t veer away at all from the pre-facelift, dimensions for the vehicle remain at 4,835 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,785 mm tall, with a 2,815 mm-long wheelbase. At the front, it’s all the same, and so the chrome pin grille and full LED reflector units, complete with the L-shaped LED daytime running lights, are all here.

Same with the alloy wheels, which have been carried over, although the 19-inch option (on the previous Flagship) has been dropped, with all MC versions riding on the 18-inch design (and 225/55 profile tyres) from before. The only significant change comes with a switch in tyre choice, with the MC moving over from the Continental EcoContact 6 (19s) and Goodyear Efficient Grip (18s) to Giti Control P10 rubbers, the brand selection in line with developments elsewhere.

    2026 Proton X90 MC launched – new 1.5T i-GT 4-cyl, no 48V mild-hybrid, priced RM30k lower, from RM99,800

There are some changes, and omissions, which we’ll get to. The line-up – and naming convention for the variants – has been revised. In 2023, there were four variants, these being the Standard, Executive, Premium and Flagship. Of these, three (Standard, Executive and Premium) were seven-seaters (2-3-2 configuration, with a bench middle-row), while the Flagship was a six-seat version (2-2-2 layout, with a pair of second-row captain seats).

The range has now been trimmed to three, with the X90 MC series now consisting of the 1.5TD Lite and 1.5TD Prime seven-seaters and 1.5TD Prime X six-seater. More importantly, the prices have been significantly revised from before, and they are (all on-the-road, without insurance):

    • Proton X90 1.5TD Lite (seven-seater) – RM99,800
    • Proton X90 1.5TD Prime (seven-seater)- RM109,800
    • Proton X90 1.5TD Prime X (six-seater) – RM115,800

The above prices are with a RM7,000 rebate across the range (without that rebate, it’s RM106,800, RM116,800 and RM122,800, respectively), and makes the X90 MC considerably cheaper – by up to RM30k in the case of the range-topper – from when it was first introduced, when pricing was RM123,800 for the Standard, RM130,800 for the Executive, RM144,800 for the Premium and RM152,800 for the Flagship.

    2026 Proton X90 MC launched – new 1.5T i-GT 4-cyl, no 48V mild-hybrid, priced RM30k lower, from RM99,800

There’s a reason for this price restructuring. The car isn’t a volume mover, having sold just over 10,000 units (10,463 registrations from launch up to February 2026, by our reckoning), and the landscape has changed since the car made its debut, with competitors having sprung up. Cost sensitivities have also come into play in the segment, and so pricing of the SUV has been adjusted to keep it competitive, the idea being to offer a proposition of value to those looking for a larger-sized family mover, minus the frills.

The X90 MC does bring with it something new under the skin, and this is the switch from the previous GEP3 1.5 litre three-cylinder turbocharged GDI engine (with a 48V mild-hybrid system) to a BHE15-EFZ 1.5 litre Intelligent Green Technology (i-GT) turbo four-cylinder engine, the same as seen on the the updated X50, X70 MC3 and S70 MC1.

The new mill, which is paired with a retuned seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, produces 181 PS (179 hp) at 5,500 rpm and 290 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm. While output numbers are lower than the outgoing GEP3 engine, which delivered 190 PS (187 hp) and 300 Nm, the i-GT should deliver far lower maintenance costs – helped by a toothed timing chain that has a 200,000 km lifespan – along with reduced noise and vibration.

The efficiency improvements of the newer engine should also offset the loss of the previous belt-driven starter-generator. This is reflected in the claimed 6.9 litre/100 km FC, very similar to the old mild-hybrid despite the lack of start-stop and coasting features.

As before, the X90 MC continues to feature a rear multi-link suspension configuration, which was originally developed by Proton and chosen over the torsion beam the Haoyue has. The original X90 also featured suspension tuning to cater for Malaysian roads, and there should be no changes to that in this regard.

As it is with the exterior, the interior has been carried over, although there are improvements to kit. The seat upholstery is now leatherette from the base model on (previously, the Standard came with fabric seats), and AACP finally makes its way on, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available across all variants.

Otherwise, everything is familiar from before – the analogue instrument cluster from the previous Standard continues on the new base Lite, with only the Prime and Prime X coming with a full-width 10.3-inch digital instrument panel. The 1920 x 720 pixel resolution 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen has been retained for the entire line-up, but omits “Hi Proton” voice functionality and any data-based (4G or WiFi) connectivity features.

Elsewhere, the equipment list largely reads as before, from the dual-zone air-conditioning with an independent rear AC, with all rows on the SUV getting air vents (roof-mounted, on the second and third rows) and a G-Clean system, incorporating a N95 cabin filter and ioniser, to the seven USB ports found across all three rows. Cargo volume is unchanged, the boot offering 257 litres with the third row seats up in place, and 2,050 litres for the seven-seater with the second and third row seats folded down (1,011 litres for the six-seater, third row down).

Moving up from the Lite to the Prime adds on auto headlamps, auto rain sensing wipers, front welcome lamps, with a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat. The variant also adds on a 360-degree HD camera with a 180-degree transparent view, a tyre pressure monitoring system and front parking sensors.

As for the Prime X, like it was with the previous Flagship, the upholstery gets bumped up to Nappa leather and the front passenger seat is a four-way power adjustable unit. Also retained for the six-seater is a front passenger ‘Boss’ switch, which allows the front passenger seat to be moved forward to provide more in the way of legroom for the second row occupant seated behind it. The second-row captain seats, which can be manually adjusted fore/aft and individually reclined, retain their ventilation feature.

Now, the omissions, largely made in light of the significant price revision downwards. Besides there no longer being any 4G/WiFi connectivity, the auto dimming rear-view mirror and ambient lighting has been ditched, as has the panoramic sunroof from the Flagship as well as the wireless mobile charger from the old Premium. Likewise, there is no more powered tailgate.

Safety-wise, the airbag count remains at six, but none of the MC variants feature any ADAS kit in any form at all (it was on the Premium on, previously). Basic active safety features like blind spot monitor and RCTA, previously fitted to the Standard variant, have also been removed. Cruise control, however, remains..

In terms of exterior colours, the palette choices have also been revised from six to five with facelift – four shades (Marine Blue, Armour Silver, Snow White and Jet Grey) are carried over from before, while Quartz Black is a new option. The Cinnamon Brown and Ruby Red from before have been dropped. As for the interior scheme, black is the sole colour available across both leatherette and Nappa leather upholstery choices.

2026 Proton X90 MC spied at test track – new 1.5T i-GT 4-cyl, looks the same as before, launching soon?

This was a surprise – during the media preview of the new Proton X70 on Tuesday, the national carmaker’s Shah Alam test track was inundated by engineers who proceeded to test the updated X90 right in front of our eyes. This caught the attention of our trusty photographer Sherman Sim, who shot the photos you see here.

Receiving its first minor change since its launch back in 2023, the three-row SUV is set to gain the same BHE15-EFZ 1.5 litre Intelligent Green Technology (i-GT) turbo four-cylinder engine as that X70, producing 181 PS at 5,500 rpm and 290 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm.

Shorn of its 48-volt mild hybrid system, it actually produces less power and torque than the old 1.5 litre GEP3 three-pot (190 PS/300 Nm), but it should deliver far lower maintenance costs – helped by a toothed timing chain that has a 200,000 km lifespan – along with reduced noise and vibration. The efficiency improvements of the newer engine should also offset the loss of the belt-driven starter-generator, as should a retuned seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

2026 Proton X90 MC spied at test track – new 1.5T i-GT 4-cyl, looks the same as before, launching soon?

Not that you’d be able to tell from the outside. Despite the disguise, it’s clear that the X90 MC will feature exactly the same design as before, right down to the base 18-inch alloy wheels on this unit. Ditto the interior, although there may be some colour and trim changes for a modest visual refresh.

The expected big news is that the X90 should finally, belatedly receive wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Proton having previously reneged on its promise to add these smartphone mirroring features to the original model. These should go hand-in-hand with a more powerful infotainment system and an updated Atlas operating system, as can be found on newer models. Expect a launch within the first half of 2026, after the eMas 7 PHEV.

    2026 Proton X90 MC1 spied, likely to get new 1.5T i-GT 4-cyl engine, same looks, no more 48V mild-hybrid

The forthcoming Proton X90 MC1 facelift has been sighted on Malaysian roads, courtesy of paultan.org reader with the screen name Arashikage.

From the supplied images, it appears that this example continues to wear the current model‘s front fascia beneath its camouflage foil, with the current model’s alloy wheels also seen here. Its exterior dimensions therefore can expected to be unchanged, at 4,835 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,785 mm tall with a 2,815 mm wheelbase.

The X90 is just two-and-a-half years old in the market, having been launched in May 2023, and so Proton’s three-row SUV is not likely to receive a comprehensive visual makeover as the Geely Haoyue L has done, so the X90 is more likely to carry on with its present-day look. For instance, the X50 received its major update just this year, five years since the original was launched.

From the Proton Tech Showcase that was held by the national carmaker earlier this month, we know that the three-row SUV, among other upcoming models, will receive the 1.5 i-GT turbocharged four-cylinder engine as featured in the Proton X50 facelift that was launched in July this year.

    2026 Proton X90 MC1 spied, likely to get new 1.5T i-GT 4-cyl engine, same looks, no more 48V mild-hybrid

This powerplant outputs 181 PS and 290 Nm, and in the X50 facelift it is paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels. This will however do without the 48-volt mild-hybrid system of the current X90 that is powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, making 190 PS and 300 Nm.

Time will tell if the interior will be as unchanged as its exterior, though for reference, the Geely Haoyue L facelift that was revealed last month gets a different dashboard with a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and 10.2-inch driver’s instrument display; the current X90 uses a 12.3-inch infotainment unit.

The Haoyue L facelift also sports a different centre console arrangement, where the transmission selector is side-by-side with the pair of cupholders. While the Geely model is offered with either five, six or seven seats, the Proton X90’s positioning is likely to have it continue with a three-row configuration.

    Proton X70 MC3, X90 MC and S70 MC facelifts confirmed to get 1.5 i-GT turbo 4-cyl from X50 facelift

Also revealed at the Proton Tech Showcase launch today at Proton’s Centre of Excellence in Shah Alam were future models. We’ll detail the AMA models in a separate story soon; this story focuses on the upcoming X/S models, namely the X70 MC3, X90 MC and S70 MC facelifts.

Born in 2018, the X70 was Proton-Geely’s first child. In 2022 the SUV changed from a four- to a three-cylinder engine (MC1), and 2024 saw the launch of the MC2, with a new face and bigger screen. This appears to have done little to boost the ageing SUV’s sales (it’s not even in the top 20 year-to-date table) and the ‘MC3’ designation suggests yet another facelift rather than an all-new model.

    Proton X70 MC3, X90 MC and S70 MC facelifts confirmed to get 1.5 i-GT turbo 4-cyl from X50 facelift

Moving on to the X90 and S70, both of which are waiting impatiently for their first facelifts. The latest Geely Haoyue/Okavango facelift looks quite garang, and like the X50 facelift, has LED projector headlamps and end-to-end tail lamps. Here’s hoping. No more 48-volt mild-hybrid system, though. The S70 MC, you’ve seen testing on the road.

Proton has also pretty much confirmed that all three models will, like the X50 facelift, go from three to four cylinders. Once the old GEP3 TGDi engines run out, the X50 facelift’s new i-GT BHE15TD mill, which the Tanjong Malim plant is already churning out at full steam, will go into the engine bays of these three models, as well as the seven-speed DCT, by 2026. Bye bye GEP3, bye bye Campro VVT.

  • 2026 Geely Haoyue L facelift revealed – new 1.5T 4-cylinder, Flyme Auto infotainment, Proton X90 facelift?

2026 Geely Haoyue L facelift revealed – new 1.5T 4-cylinder, Flyme Auto infotainment, Proton X90 facelift?

Five months after it was introduced to the Chinese market, the Geely Haoyue/Okavango has received its second facelift, retaining the Haoyue L name from the first makeover in late 2022. Leaked in a ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT) filing all the way back in July, this refresh adds a slightly different look, new technologies and a smaller, less powerful turbocharged engine.

That mill in particular is the 1.5 litre BHE15 four-cylinder engine that has already made its way to many Geely (and now Proton) models, producing 181 PS and 290 Nm of torque. Mated to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, it likely complements the existing 218 PS/325 Nm 2.0 litre mill as a less expensive and more frugal alternative.

Beyond that, the changes are fairly minor and consists of a slightly slimmer and less outlandish hexagonal grille shorn of its chrome surround. The bumper has also been redesigned to be slightly sleeker and less angular, featuring chrome “fangs” that frame the air intakes. Range-topping models gain new 20-inch ten-spoke alloys.

2026 Geely Haoyue L facelift revealed – new 1.5T 4-cylinder, Flyme Auto infotainment, Proton X90 facelift?

The rest of the car remains unchanged; compared to the original Haoyue, the L sports sharp LED projector headlights joined by a full-width chrome bar, reshaped chrome door rubbing strips, segmented full-width taillights (similar to the facelifted Proton X50), a number plate moved from the bumper into the tailgate, and a black rear valance with twin tailpipes.

Inside, the changes are similarly minimal, given that the Haoyue L’s dashboard had already been completely redesigned with full-width air-con vents, a 10.2-inch digital instrument display and a new centre console with a smaller gear selector next to twin cupholders arranged fore and aft. The same dashboard was used on the related Riddara RD6 electric pick-up.

The big change is that the infotainment system – which still employs a 14.6-inch touchscreen – now runs on the Flyme Auto operating system, the same one used in the Galaxy E5/EX5 and Proton eMas 7. The Haoyue L continues to be offered with either five, six or seven seats.

2026 Geely Haoyue L facelift revealed – new 1.5T 4-cylinder, Flyme Auto infotainment, Proton X90 facelift?

This latest refresh is significant for Malaysia because it will likely make its way over as the facelifted Proton X90. That car has remained unchanged since its launch in May 2023 and is now the oldest among the national carmaker’s X- and S-series models, so an overhaul is due.

Plus, the existing model’s supply of three-cylinder engines will likely be exhausted soon, given that the Tanjung Malim plant that built them is now running full steam churning out the new BHE15 four-pot. Expect the revised car to arrive sometime next year, sans the existing 48-volt mild hybrid system.
