Omoda C9 Matte Black Limited Edition in Malaysia – limited units, deliveries have begun, RM191,800

First announced in December, the Omoda C9 Matte Black Limited Edition showed up at the same 1 Utama roadshow where the Omoda C9 PHEV was launched. Here it is in all its glory.

Going by some dealer posts on social media, it would appear that deliveries have already started, with mentions of the number of units this special edition is limited to differing from 100 to 120 units. It also seems to be an AWD-only edition, corroborated by the red brake callipers.

The model name’s quite self-explanatory, but not everything has been matte-blacked – the ‘OMODA’ panel above the grille is still in gloss black, and the rear bumper trim strip and the side blades along the bottom of the doors are still in chrome.

Items given the gloss black treatment include the front splitter trim strip, rear diffuser centre panel, 20-inch alloys, roof rails and the bottom half of the side mirror caps. The ‘C9’ tailgate badge is gone. The interior, however, appears to have been left well alone.

We’re told the cosmetic package costs RM3,000, which would transform the RM188,800 asked for the AWD into RM191,800. Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia has not revealed yet if the package can be applied to existing cars. What do you guys think? Share with us your thoughts below.

Launched in December 2024, the Shah Alam-assembled D-segment SUV has a 261 PS/400 Nm 2.0 litre turbo four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed auto, plus front-MacPherson strut and rear-multi link suspension (with Continuous Damping Control adaptive suspension on the AWD).

  • Omoda C9 PHEV launched in Malaysia – 1.5T petrol, 537 PS/650 Nm PHEV, 145 km EV range WLTP; RM209k

Omoda C9 PHEV launched in Malaysia – 1.5T petrol, 537 PS/650 Nm PHEV, 145 km EV range WLTP; RM209k

First previewed in October last year before estimated pricing was indicated, the Omoda C9 PHEV has now been officially launched in Malaysia, priced at RM208,800 on-the-road without insurance. The C9 PHEV comes to market initially as a fully imported (CBU) model for a limited run of 50 units, and these will be followed by locally assembled (CKD) units which are already in production in Shah Alam.

Buyers who book the C9 PHEV between March 18 and April 30 additionally receive the launch package that consists of a RM3,000 duit Raya rebate, and a complimentary vehicle-to-load (V2L) connector valued at RM730. A limited number of fully imported (CBU) units of the C9 PHEV will be offered with one year of complimentary insurance coverage valued at RM6,000, while stocks last.

Compared to its ICE-powered twin, the C9 PHEV packs a version of the Super Hybrid System (SHS) from the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, though the C9 PHEV gets a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) to enable the ICE to also drive the wheels at lower speeds, contributing to stronger acceleration.

Here, the powertrain is comprised of a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 143 PS and 215 Nm, with a dual-motor setup in front consisting of a P2 integrated starter-generator that outputs 102 PS and 170 Nm, and a P2.5 traction motor producing 122 PS and 220 Nm.

Omoda C9 PHEV launched in Malaysia – 1.5T petrol, 537 PS/650 Nm PHEV, 145 km EV range WLTP; RM209k

These are accompanied by a 238 PS/310 Nm motor driving the rear axle, providing all-wheel-drive and a combined output of 537 PS and 650 Nm, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds. Top speed is a claimed 180 km/h.

The electric side of the C9 PHEV powertrain draws from a 34.46 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that provides up to 145 km of EV range on the WLTP testing standard, and in conjunction with a 70 litre fuel tank, offers a claimed 1,100 km of hybrid range.

The battery can be recharged at up to 70 kW DC, which yields a 30-80% SoC in 25 minutes, while 6.6 kW AC charging takes around 5.5 hours to top up from 30-100%; a 10-100% charge at 2.7 kW AC takes 12 hours. At a drive event in South Africa, our own Jonathan Lee in the C9 PHEV has achieved an effective range of 1,190 km, with 939 km driven and in indicated 251 km of range remaining.

For the driver, the C9 PHEV offers six drive modes – Eco, Normal, Sand, Off-Road, Snow and Sport, three levels of energy regeneration, and the option to switch between full EV and HEV modes. Continuous damping control (CDC) for the MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension offers Soft, Medium and Hard settings which can be selected by the driver, in addition to an automatic mode.

Rolling stock for the C9 PHEV is a set of 20-inch alloy wheels shod in Michelin e-Primacy tyres measuring 245/50R20, though while the ICE-powered C9 gets a full-sized spare, the C9 PHEV gets a tyre repair kit. Jaecoo claims the same luggage capacity numbers for the C9 PHEV as those of the petrol C9, which are 660 litres with the seats up and up to 1,783 litres with the rear seats folded.

Exterior equipment on the C9 PHEV includes LED adaptive headlamps with sigma-style DRLs and automatic high beam, headlamp washers, welcome lighting sequence, dynamic turn signals in front, LED tail lamps, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding and heated door mirrors with memory, powered tailgate, and roof rails. Access is by an NFC key that grant keyless entry, along with remote window and tailgate opening.

Interior kit in the C9 PHEV consists of leather upholstery for the seats, instrument panel and multifunction steering wheel, the latter on a four-way power-adjustable column. Seats get heating and ventilation in the front and rear rows, with the driver’s seat getting six-way power adjustment, and the front passenger seat getting four-way power adjustment.

The driver gets a 12.3-inch instrumentation display – with a head-up display – while alongside it is a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, accessible by voice command with the “Hello Omoda” prompt. Smartphone integration is by Android Auto, while audio is by a 14-speaker, 390-watt Sony system, including two dedicated speakers in the driver’s headrest.

Mobile devices can be charged on a 50-watt ventilated, wireless charging pad, with a 12-volt power socket, one USB-A and one USB-C for the front row; the rear seats also get outlets which are one USB-A and one USB-C each.

Dual-zone automatic air-conditioning features here, including second-row air vents and an in-car fragrance system. This includes a negative-ion and ozone air refreshing system, air quality management, and automatic defogging.

For driving assistance systems, functions in the C9 PHEV include adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, traffic jam assist, constant cruising, intelligent active speed limit, front departure information, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning, door opening warning, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, emergency lane keeping, lane change assist, front collision warning, AEB, emergency brake assist, secondary collision mitigation, auto parking assist and a 540-degree camera system.

Also part of its safety features are ABS, EBD, brake assist, electronic stability programme, traction control, hill start assist, hill descent control, electronic speed limiter, tyre pressure monitoring, front and rear seat belt reminder, child safety lock, ISOFIX child seat mounts, auto locking (unlocking upon engine off or collision), telematics with find-my-car feature, and eight airbags.

Priced at RM208,800 on-the-road without insurance, the Omoda C9 PHEV in Malaysia is covered by a seven-year, 200,000 km vehicle warranty, and this is joined by a 10-year, one million km engine warranty while its electric drive components, comprised of the battery, electric motors and power electronics are covered by a 10-year, 200,000 km warranty.

  • Omoda C9 PHEV launching in Malaysia March 18 – 537 PS, 145 km EV range, 1,100 km combined, RM220k est

Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia has teased the Omoda C9 PHEV on its socials – the plug-in hybrid version of the D-segment SUV (first launched in Malaysia as an ICE model in December 2024) will hit the market this Wednesday, March 18.

We already know the estimated price is RM220k, so let’s see how much lower the final price will be. Since the ICE models cost RM169k (2WD) and RM189k (AWD), it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect a tad above RM200k for this. There’s also a RM4,618 ‘super early bird’ package comprising a RM3,888 rebate and a free vehicle-to-load (V2L) connector cable worth RM730.

The C9 PHEV features an upgraded version of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV‘s Super Hybrid System (SHS). While the 143 PS/215 Nm 1.5 litre turbo four-cylinder engine has been retained, it is instead paired with dual electric motors at the front – a P2 integrated starter-generator making 102 PS and 170 Nm, as well as a P2.5 traction motor churning out 122 PS and 220 Nm.

Omoda C9 PHEV launching in Malaysia March 18 – 537 PS, 145 km EV range, 1,100 km combined, RM220k est

The J7’s single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) has also been ditched in favour of a three-speed unit. This allows the combustion engine to help drive the wheels at lower speeds, increasing acceleration. Finally, the rear wheels are driven by a 230 PS/310 Nm motor, providing all-wheel drive and a total system output of 537 PS and 650 Nm of torque, enabling it to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Top speed is a bit low, however, at just 179 km/h.

Under the floor, meanwhile, sits a 34-kWh NMC battery that delivers a WLTP-rated pure electric range of 145 km, and with a 70 litre fuel tank, the C9 has a claimed total range of 1,100 km. We can attest to this, having achieved an effective range of 1,190 km (939 km driven, plus 251 km of range remaining) to win the Omoda & Jaecoo Long Range Safari Drive competition in South Africa last year.

Fuel consumption is rated at 1.4 litres per 100 km with a full charge; whittle the battery down to around 20% and this rises to 6.5 litres per 100 km. The C9 PHEV can support up to 70 kW of DC fast charging, enabling the battery to be topped up from 30 to 80% in 25 minutes. It can also accept up to 6.6 kW of AC charging, so charging from 30 to 100% takes 5.5 hours. Learn more about the C9 PHEV here.

Aside from the Jaecoo J5, Omoda & Jaecoo Malaysia has also finally provided estimated pricing for the Omoda C9 PHEV. Previewed in October, the flagship petrol-electric SUV is set to be priced at RM220,000, which is quite a bit higher than the RM188,800 asked for the regular AWD model – although in true O&J fashion, we expect the final figure to be significantly lower.

Just as per the J5, the C9 PHEV is being offered with a “super early bird” package for those who book from now until launch, although worth quite a bit less at RM4,618. This includes a RM3,888 “angpau” rebate and a complimentary vehicle-to-load (V2L) connector cable worth RM730.

No launch window provided here unlike the J5, but given that the latter is debuting next month – and that O&J has confirmed more new models are coming in the third and fourth quarters of the year – we expect the C9 PHEV to go on sale in the second quarter. So, April to June, then?

As a refresher, the C9 PHEV features an upgraded version of the Super Hybrid System (SHS) found in the Jaecoo J7 PHEV.

  • Omoda C9 Matte Black Limited Edition in Malaysia

Omoda C9 Matte Black Limited Edition in Malaysia

Go to Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia‘s social media pages and you’ll see this – the Omoda C9 Matte Black Limited Edition. The caption says it’ll be “exceptionally rare” and calls on customers to “book a test drive today and secure your chance to experience this limited edition”, but offers little more in the way of details, including how many (or how few) units there’ll be, plus the all-important price.

The model name is quite self-explanatory, really. It can’t be based on the PHEV as that hasn’t been launched yet. So it’s got to be the ICE model, although we can’t categorically tell from this one shot whether it’s the 2WD (silver callipers) or AWD (red callipers).

Retail prices for the regular car are RM168,800 for the 2WD and RM188,800 for the AWD, although Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia is offering some year-end deals at the moment. As for this limited edition, let’s wait and see how much this is going to cost, or if you’d much rather wrap your C9 yourself.

  • Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo previewed in Malaysia – RM220k est; 605 PS; 150 km EV range, 1,100 km hybrid

Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo previewed in Malaysia – RM220k est; 605 PS; 150 km EV range, 1,100 km hybrid

Joining the Jaecoo J5 at the Omoda | Jaecoo Carnival at Desa Park City from August 21-24 is the Omoda C9 PHEV, essentially a plug-in hybrid version of the D-segment SUV that was launched here in December last year.

While it may look practically identical to its internal combustion-engined sibling, the keen-eyed among you will notice the very few design cues to set it apart. At the front, the lower portion of the bumper has a small “break” in the middle that isn’t present on the ICE model, while the left side gains an additional door for the charging ports. Look at the back and you’ll spot the stylised ‘PHEV’ badge, while the ‘C9’ emblem is in blue.

It’s much the same story on the inside, as the C9 PHEV’s dashboard appears as a carbon copy of the ICE model. Again, there are some minor differences if you look closely, including a revision of the drive mode dial to put the powertrain in either hybrid or pure electric mode. There’s also no engine start button on the dash, with the car starting up when it detects someone with the key fob in the driver’s seat.

Of course, the main draw of the C9 PHEV is its powertrain, which delivers a total system output of 605 PS (597 hp or 445 kW) and 915 Nm of torque. These are mighty figures when compared to the non-PHEV model that gets 261 PS (257 hp or 192 kW) and 400 Nm from its 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine.

To make all that grunt, the C9 PHEV uses an upgraded version of the J7 PHEV’s Super Hybrid System (SHS). This is based around a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine making 143 PS and 215 Nm of torque. However, where the J7 PHEV is front-wheel drive only, the C9 PHEV offers electric all-wheel drive thanks to a rear electric motor rated at 283 PS and 310 Nm.

The system also includes two electric motors at the front providing 102 PS/170 Nm and 122 PS/220 Nm respectively, along with a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) in place of the J7 PHEV’s single-speed unit. In a sprint, the C9 PHEV needs just 4.9 seconds to get from 0-100 km/h.

Power for the electric motors is provided by a 34.46-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which will provide up to 150 km of range when running on pure electricity following the WLTP standard. In hybrid mode, you’re looking at a total driving range of around 1,100 km.

Is 1,100 km possible? Well, our man Jonathan Lee participated in the Omoda | Jaecoo Long Range Safari Drive earlier this year and clocked an effective range of 1,190 km (939 km driven, plus 251 km of range remaining) on one full tank of petrol and a single battery charge.

Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo previewed in Malaysia – RM220k est; 605 PS; 150 km EV range, 1,100 km hybrid

In terms of charging, the C9 PHEV supports up to 70 kW of DC fast charging, topping up the battery from 30 to 80% in 25 minutes. It will also accept AC charging up to 6.6 kW, taking five and a half hours to charge from 30 to 100%.

Much like the regular C9, the PHEV version gets MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link setup at the rear, supplemented by Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension, which is only standard on the AWD variant of the ICE model.

A full spec sheet isn’t available yet because this is merely a preview, but expect the C9 PHEV to come with the same kit as the ICE model, especially when considering the price. The estimated figure we’re given now is RM220,000, which is RM31,200 more expensive than the C9 ICE in AWD guise at RM188,800 – the base 2WD is RM168,800. Is it worth the premium?

  • Jaecoo J5, Omoda C9 PHEV teased for Malaysia – public preview at Desa Park City on August 21 to 24

Jaecoo J5, Omoda C9 PHEV teased for Malaysia – public preview at Desa Park City on August 21 to 24

It looks like Omoda & Jaecoo Malaysia still has some big new launches planned, despite already debuting the Jaecoo J7 PHEV and J8 over the past eight months. The company is holding the Omoda & Jaecoo Carnival at Desa Park City from August 21 to 24, and a seemingly innocuous promo image reveals some surprising new models.

We have, of course, seen both of these overseas before. The most important of these is the J5, revealed last year as a smaller (and thus, cheaper) sibling to the popular J7. With its rectilinear Range Rover Evoque-lite design, it should sell like the proverbial hot cakes.

The car made its ASEAN debut in Indonesia in February as an EV (before appearing in Thailand), but it will likely be offered in petrol guise at first. That version was showcased at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month with deliveries set to start in the UK later this year. The company did previously promise a Malaysian launch in the fourth quarter of the year, and it appears that for once it will introduce a car on time.

Power comes from Chery’s ubiquitous 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. No output figures have been released so far, but expect them to mirror the J7’s – 197 PS and 290 Nm of torque, likely sent to the front wheels through that car’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The other surprise is the Omoda C9 PHEV, which as the name suggests is the plug-in hybrid version of the five-seater D-segment SUV. We actually drove the car to victory in an eco challenge in South Africa in February, covering 939 km from Cape Town to Addo on a single tank and battery charge.

Looking practically identical to its combustion-engined sibling, the PHEV utilises an upgraded version of the J7 PHEV’s Super Hybrid System (SHS), centred around the same 143 PS/215 Nm 1.5 litre turbo engine. Unlike its smaller sibling, the C9 gains triple electric motors for all-wheel drive – a 102 PS/170 Nm and 122 PS/220 Nm pair of front motors and a 238 PS/310 Nm rear motor. There’s also a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) in place of the J7’s single-speeder.

Altogether, the C9 PHEV produces 537 PS (Australian-market figure, other markets claim 598 PS and 915 Nm of torque), getting it from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Meanwhile, a 34.46 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery delivers an electric range of 150 km on the WLTP cycle, and when paired with a 70 litre fuel tank the total range is 1,100 km.

In terms of charging, the C9 PHEV supports up to 70 kW of DC fast charging, topping up the battery from 30 to 80% in 25 minutes. It will also accept AC charging up to 6.6 kW, taking five and a half hours to charge from 30 to 100%. With the regular C9 topping out at RM188,800 for the AWD model, expect the plug-in version to slot in just under the RM200,000 mark.

Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo – AWD, 598 PS, 150 km EV range, 1,100 km total range, Malaysia launch possible

Last week, we were invited to participate in the Omoda & Jaecoo Long Range Safari Drive competition in South Africa, taking us from Cape Town to Addo. There, we drove the new Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo a gruelling 939 km over three days, using only one full tank of petrol and a single battery charge.

The petrol-electric version of the C9 derives its Super Hybrid System (SHS) powertrain from the recently-launched Jaecoo J7 PHEV, in this case a 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, dual electric motors and a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The C9, however, uses a three-speed DHT and adds a rear motor to provide all-wheel drive.

The O&J team declined to provide full specifications during the drive, only saying it will have a total system output of 598 PS and 915 Nm of torque. That’s 20 PS and 5 Nm less than its Chinese counterpart, the Exeed Yaoguang (RX) C-DM, which uses a 156 PS/220 Nm engine, a 224 PS/390 Nm front traction motor and a 238 PS/310 Nm rear motor. The export J7 PHEV’s engine is slightly less powerful at 143 PS and 215 Nm, so we can assume that’s where most of the shortfall lies.

Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo – AWD, 598 PS, 150 km EV range, 1,100 km total range, Malaysia launch possible

Also mentioned was an impressive pure electric range of 150 km on the WLTP cycle, which is exactly what the Yaoguang C-DM achieves, meaning that the C9 PHEV likely uses the same 34.46 kWh CATL M3P battery. Total range is rated at 1,100 km, also on the WLTP cycle. The car can support DC fast charging at an unspecified input, with the Exeed capable of charging from 30 to 80% in 20 minutes.

On the outside, the C9 PHEV maintains the petrol model‘s sleek design, with a coupé-like roofline, distinctive “Sigma” full-width front light signature, segmented taillights and even the same 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. The only visible differences are a split front air intake, a charge port door on the passenger side and a “340E” badge. Unfortunately, the car still features fake quad tailpipes.

The C9 PHEV’s interior is also very familiar, with organic lines, a widescreen display panel with twin 12.3-inch displays, a tall centre console with cool silver air-con and drive mode knobs, and quilted leather seats. This South African tester gets a stylish brown and white colour scheme that is unlikely to make it to Malaysia given buyers’ preference for more somber hues here.

Unlike the J7 PHEV, the C9 PHEV retains the same door cards as the petrol model, meaning you still get Mercedes-Benz-style powered seat adjustment switches and (blissfully) discrete door mirror controls. Other features carried over include adaptive dampers, triple-zone climate control, an air fragrance system, a panoramic glass sunroof, a head-up display, power-reclining rear seats, a 360-degree camera system with a 3D view and a transparency function and a 14-speaker Sony sound system with headrest speakers.

A Jaecoo Malaysia representative present during the drive told us that the Omoda C9 PHEV could be coming to our market, although a launch timeline has not been set. In case you were wondering, the Malaysian team including yours truly took first place during the drive with an effective range of 1,190 km (939 km driven, plus 251 km of range remaining), beating out the South African contingent by just six kilometres.

  • 2025 Omoda C9 by Jaecoo Malaysian review – Mercedes-Benz GLC for the price of Honda CR-V?

2025 Omoda C9 by Jaecoo Malaysian review – Mercedes-Benz GLC for the price of Honda CR-V?

Launched in Malaysia in December 2024 following its preview in September that year, the Omoda C9 by Jaecoo is one of the most disruptive Chinese cars to enter the Malaysian market, priced from RM168,800 with a generous equipment specification.

By the numbers, the Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – as it is sold by Jaecoo Malaysia – measures 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,671 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm and packs a luggage capacity of 660 litres with its rear seats in place and 1,783 litres with the seats folded.

This places the C9 in the price ballpark of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and the Honda CR-V, while gunning for the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, and the Toyota Harrier. The Omoda C9 undercuts the latter two on price by a long way; two variants of the C9 are on offer in Malaysia; the 2WD at RM168,800, and the AWD at RM188,800; prices for both are on-the-road without insurance.

That outlay brings a powertrain comprised of a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque, sent to the driven wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The C9 2WD gets three drive modes, while the C9 AWD gains a further four modes with emphasis on off-road driving.

It’s a generous kit list in the Omoda C9, and both 2WD and AWD variants get a Level 2.5 ADAS suite that packs adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, traffic jam assist, AEB, blind spot detection, front collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning, emergency lane keeping, lane change assistant, lane departure prevention, active speed limiter, and front departure alert.

Also on are door opening warning, automatic headlamps, and driver monitoring with driver fatigue warning. Active safety features include ABS, ESP, brake assist, EBD, traction control, hill hold, hill start assist, hill descent control, multi-collision brake, tyre pressure monitoring and speed limit reminder. On the passive safety front, the C9 gets eight airbags.

That said, the Omoda C9 isn’t perfect. Our man, Hafriz Shah goes through what’s good, and what’s bad about the locally assembled (CKD) SUV; watch the review video here.

  • Omoda C9 PHEV sighted in Malaysia – petrol-electric version of D-segment SUV to be launched soon?

Omoda C9 PHEV sighted in Malaysia – petrol-electric version of D-segment SUV to be launched soon?

Launched in Malaysia last December with a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol powertrain, the Omoda C9 has been sighted in Malaysia as a plug-in hybrid variant, courtesy of an image shared to the paultan.org Automotive/Car Discussion group on Facebook.

Plugged into a TNB Electron charging point, the Omoda C9 PHEV was sighted at Aeon Kinta City in Ipoh, Perak, according to a reader comment. The charging point provides 47 kW DC charging through a dynamic double-nozzle output, according to Tenaga Nasional Berhad, which should mean the vehicle is equipped to take DC charging via a CCS2 connection.

Sold in China as the Exeed RX, the PHEV version of the Omoda C9 gets a petrol-electric powertrain that features a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), with up to two electric motors – one on each axle – for a combined output of up to 619 PS (610 hp or 455 kW) and 920 Nm, and the carmaker claims a WLTC-rated range figure of 1,300 km.

This plug-in hybrid version of the Omoda C9 could join the list of Jaecoo models due to arrive in Malaysia this year – the Omoda C9 is marketed under the Jaecoo banner – along with the battery-electric J6 and the three-row J8 SUV, the latter also sold in China as a 605 hp/915 Nm PHEV.

In Malaysia, the Omoda C9 officially arrived in two variants – the 2WD and 4WD, priced at RM168,800 and RM188,800 respectively. Its 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine outputs 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque, output to the driven wheels through an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Equipment added to the AWD variant includes Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension, with additional four modes with an off-road focus in addition to the three drive modes from the 2WD variant. Active assistance systems are standard across both variants, including a Level 2.5 ADAS suite.

  • Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – D-segment coupé SUV launched in Malaysia, 2WD and AWD; fr RM169k OTR

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – D-segment coupé SUV launched in Malaysia, 2WD and AWD; fr RM169k OTR

Following the preview of the Omoda C9 SUV in September, it is now finally the official launch for the D-segment SUV under the Jaecoo brand, and this is priced at RM168,800 for the 2WD, and RM188,800 for the AWD; prices are on-the-road without insurance.

The early bird promotion for the C9 includes a 10-year, one-million km warranty on engine and suspension components, in addition to the standard seven-year, 150,000 km vehicle warranty, and this promotion is applicable to bookings made for the C9 until December 8.

To recap its brand positioning – in Malaysia, Jaecoo is positioned as a premium SUV brand, and the Omoda C9 is the most premium product from the Chery group so far in Malaysia, so this is being sold by Jaecoo Malaysia.

Measuring 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,671 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, the C9 SUV has luggage capacity from 660 litres with its rear seats in place, expanding to 1,783 litres with the seats folded. Its size places it in the ballpark of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, as well as the Toyota Harrier that is possibly its closest competitor.

Two drivetrain variants for the C9 are on offer – 2WD and AWD, both featuring the 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine that outputs 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Drive is sent to the wheels through an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Key visual identifiers for the C9 include the diamond-matrix front air intake grille, along with its ‘Sigma’ daytime running lights (DRL) signature. Headlamps are adaptive LED units, accompanied by LED tail lamps, with an auto-sensing function for the tailgate.

Underneath, the C9 chassis gets MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link setup at the rear, supplemented by the Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension on the AWD which is a stand-out feature for the SUV segment in this price bracket.

Wheels are 20-inch multi-spoke alloys shod in 245/50R20 tyres, with a matching full-size spare; the 2WD gets brake calipers in silver, while the AWD get calipers in red. Driveline controls for the C9 2WD variant include three drive modes, while those of the C9 AWD get an additional four modes with an off-road focus.

The AWD version adds off-road oriented drive modes (row below)

Equipment on the AWD is comprised of features such as a Tesla-style front and rear push-button electric door release system, rhythmic ambient lighting, a combined 24.6-inch screen and a 14-speaker Sony audio system that has speakers in the driver’s headrest (eight speakers on the 2WD).

Air-conditioning is a three-zone setup, adding a three-cartridge fragrance system on the AWD, where the choice of scent can be selected from the infotainment touchscreen.

Also included are ventilated front seats, a leather-trimmed dashboard, shift paddles, head-up display, eight-way powered driver’s seat with memory for six positions (six-way adjustment on the 2WD), dashcam and a 540-degree surround view camera, an electric steering column (manual on the 2WD) and double-glazed front windows. The rear occupants get seats with a power recline function, and B-pillar air-conditioning vents.

Added to the AWD variant are the front door ambient light, air-conditioning vent ambient light, adaptive front lighting system and an electronic child safety lock.

Active assistance systems are standard across both variants, and include a Level 2.5 ADAS suite. These are comprised of adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, traffic jam assist, AEB, blind spot detection, front collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning, emergency lane keeping, lane change assistant, lane departure prevention, active speed limiter, and front departure alert.

Other assistance functions include door opening warning, automatic headlamps, and driver monitoring with driver fatigue warning. Active safety features include ABS, ESP, brake assist, EBD, traction control, hill hold, hill start assist, hill descent control, multi-collision brake, tyre pressure monitoring and speed limit reminder. On the passive safety front, the C9 gets eight airbags.

The Omoda C9 is covered by a seven-year, 150,000 km warranty. Exterior colours are Carbon Crystal Black, Khaki White and a matte grey paint finish, the latter the first for a locally assembled vehicle in Malaysia (the C9 is assembled at Chery’s Shah Alam plant). Customer vehicle deliveries will commence in January 2025, says Jaecoo Malaysia.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo launching in Malaysia Dec 6

After plenty of teasers, Jaecoo Malaysia has announced that the Omoda C9 will be launched in exactly a week’s time on December 6. That means the five-seater premium SUV will miss some of the hubbub created by the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) happening concurrently, but it will also give the car some space of its own.

The second of the company’s models to be launched in Malaysia after the popular Jaecoo J7, the C9 is the first Omoda model to be marketed separately from the main Chery brand. As previously reported, the car will be locally assembled in the Jaecoo plant in Shah Alam, with deliveries of the AWD variant set to kick off the following month in January 2025.

The 2WD version will take quite a bit longer, only reaching customers’ hands in May or June. Prices will start from an estimated RM185,000 for the 2WD model, rising up to RM195,000 with all-wheel drive.

Known as the Exeed RX in China, the C9 is powered by the same 2.0 litre turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder petrol engine as the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, here uprated to produce 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Also differing from its more humdrum seven-seater sibling is an eight-speed automatic gearbox instead of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Underlining its status as a premium vehicle, the C9 will be fitted as standard with adaptive dampers – virtually unheard of under RM200,000. It will roll on 20-inch two-tone multi-spoke alloy wheels shod with 245/50-section Michelin e-Primacy tyres, replete with a full-size spare. The car also boasts a modest 165 mm of ground clearance but a rather more impressive 450 mm maximum water wading depth.

The C9 is the most upmarket model offered by the wider Chery Auto Malaysia group, so it’s no surprise it’s also the largest. Measuring 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,671 mm tall, the car is 53 mm longer, 60 mm wider and 34 mm lower (befitting its “coupé” designation) than the D-segment Tiggo 8 Pro, while its 2,800 mm wheelbase is a whole 90 mm longer.

It’s a big car for sure, and its mildly recognisable Omoda design language gives it plenty of road presence. Like the electric E5, the C9’s slim LED headlights (featuring cool segmented L-shaped daytime running lights) are joined by a strip with the Omoda badge, while its diamond-pattern grille has since been added to the facelifted Omoda 5.

The car’s considerable length is emphasised by the long shoulder line that stretches from the headlights to the full-width taillights, accentuated by a chrome front fender appliqué. Further evidence of the C9’s upmarket bent are the flush pop-out door handles and blacked-out D-pillars, giving it a “floating roof” look. The rear end is finished off by vertical reflectors and quad tailpipes.

The classy look continues on the inside, where the C9 houses a broad dashboard with full-width air vents and a widescreen display panel with twin 12.3-inch screens. Oodles of soft-touch leather trim adorns the dash, door cards and seats, featuring a quilted stitch pattern in places.

Particular attention has been paid to the centre console, which features stylish silver air-con and drive mode selector knobs (a far cry from the J7, which relegates the climate control functions to the touchscreen) nestled within a cool rectangular trim piece. This is also where you’ll find twin smartphone holders – one incorporating a 50-watt Qi wireless charger – and a roller top-covered storage bin.

The exhaustive list of standard kit includes keyless entry, push-button start, triple-zone climate control (including rear controls, again rare for this price), an air fragrance system, a panoramic glass roof, a head-up display, front double glazing, power-adjustable seats with memory and ventilation, a dash cam, power-reclining rear seats, a 360-degree camera system with a transparency function and a 14-speaker Sony sound system.

The AWD model adds powered steering column and driver’s seat squab adjustment, as well as seven off-road drive modes compared to the 2WD’s three. All models come standard with eight airbags and a full suite of driver assists, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, lane change assist, blind spot warning, a driver attention monitor and a door opening warning.
