Kia Sales Malaysia (KSM) has launched its first model since taking over the brand’s distributorship on January 1. The facelifted Kia Carnival arrives some two years after its global reveal and three months after it was launched in Thailand, but hey – better late than never, right?

Just like in the Land of Smiles, our Carnival continues to be CKD locally assembled at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah. This time, the MPV is only offered with either 11 or seven seats, with the eight-seater model having been dropped. Nett prices excluding on-the-road costs and insurance but including KSM’s new five-year/150,000 km warranty are as follows:

    • 2026 Kia Carnival 2.2D 11-seater – RM188,888
    • 2026 Kia Carnival 2.2D 7-seater – RM248,888

With on-the-road costs included, the prices rise to RM189,849 for the 11-seater and RM249,849 for the seven-seater. Compared to the previous Carnival, the new 11-seater model is nearly RM8,700 cheaper than before, while the seven-seater costs over RM10,000 less – staying true to KSM’s goal of “right-pricing” its models. We should point out, however, that the seven-seater is nearly RM30,000 more expensive than the 2025 model when the latter was discounted at the start of the year.

Despite the hybrid version already being built here for the Thai market, the Malaysian-spec Carnival soldiers on with the same diesel engine as before. This means private buyers will still be saddled with high fuel costs with the government’s move to targeted diesel subsidies.

That oil burner is a 2.2 litre Smartstream D turbo four-cylinder producing 202 PS at 3,800 rpm and 440 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 2,750 rpm. It drives the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and Kia claims an NEDC-rated fuel consumption figure of 6.5 litres per 100 km for this 2.1 tonne behemoth.

Setting the facelifted Carnival apart from the outgoing model is a new front fascia with a much wider “tiger nose” grille, flanked by L-shaped LED headlights – with four-a-side vertical “cube” projectors – incorporating Kia’s latest Star Map LED daytime running light graphic. The bumper design has also been simplified with a single downturned air intake framed by a silver U-shaped skid plate and LED fog lights.

At the rear, you get new full-width LED taillights with the same Star Map graphic, while the number plate recess has been moved further down the tailgate, allowing for a larger space for the Kia emblem to sit. The rear bumper has also been redesigned with a silver bar to match the front.

Both models come with roof rails and a key-detecting hands-free opening function for the powered sliding doors and tailgate (the latter closes when you walk away, too). But they differ in the wheels being offered – 18-inch two-tone turbine-style items for the 11-seater, 19-inch rollers with a distinctive “cubic” design for the seven-seater. The 11-seater also continues to get the taller door mirrors that the seven-seater lacks.

Inside, the changes are more minimal, with the 12.3-inch instrument and infotainment displays now integrated into a single curved display. The two screens are now fitted as standard – no more analogue gauge cluster as was fitted to the previous 11-seater.

Running them is an updated Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) infotainment system, which is faster and features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also fitted is a full-width ambient lighting strip under the full-width air vents, while the audio and air-con controls have been combined into a single switchable touch panel as per the EV6, freeing up space for a larger storage cubby. Elsewhere, the seven USB ports throughout the vehicle are now of the USB-C kind.

The cabin is configured in a 2-3-3-3 seating layout for the 11-seater and a 2-2-3 layout for the seven-seater. The latter’s second-row power-adjustable captain’s chairs come with a one-touch Premium Relaxation recline function and can be slid manually either fore and aft or side to side. On both variants, the front seats are eight-way power adjustable with lumbar adjustment (the seven-seater gains driver’s side four-way lumbar adjustment and memory, as well as front heating and ventilation).

Standard kit includes keyless entry with remote engine start, push-button start, triple-zone auto air-con with third-row air vents, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, faux leather upholstery, second- and third-row side window sunshades, paddle shifters, a Qi wireless charger, six speakers and a 360-degree monitor. The seven-seater adds a head-up display, genuine leather and a 12-speaker Bose sound system, although the old car’s dual sunroofs have been dropped with the facelift.

Frustratingly, KSM has still seen fit to reserve driver assists to the seven-seater, even basic functions such as autonomous emergency braking – now outfitted with junction turning collision avoidance, at least. Other features include adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring with collision avoidance, blind spot cameras, rear cross traffic alert with auto brake and a driver attention monitor.

Eight airbags – including a driver’s knee airbag and a new front centre airbag – and stability control are standard fitment, as is a door opening warning and a rear seat reminder.

  • 2026 Kia Carnival facelift launching in Malaysia soon – MPV to stay diesel-only or gain petrol hybrid option?

2026 Kia Carnival facelift launching in Malaysia soon – MPV to stay diesel-only or gain petrol hybrid option?

After officially beginning operations just a few days ago, Kia Sales Malaysia has now teased the first model that will be launched here soon. On its social media pages, the company posted a video depicting what is very likely the facelifted Carnival.

The MPV is currently in its fourth generation, which made its global debut back in June 2020 before a facelift was revealed in October 2023. In Malaysia, the KA4-generation Carnival officially went on sale in January 2022, arriving initially as an 11-seater that was fully imported (CBU) from South Korea.

Moving the clock forward, the Carnival became a locally-assembled (CKD) model that was available in seven- or eight-seat configurations in July 2022. The 11-seater remained a CBU offering at the time, although it eventually made the transition to CKD in November 2023. The Carnival would later get a running update in February 2024.

Getting back to the MPV coming our way, the facelifted Carnival is easily identified by the brand’s signature Star Map daytime running light signature that is seen in the teaser. This is accompanied by new vertical LED headlamps and a larger grille, while the rear gets inverted L-shaped LED taillights and a lower number plate recess.

Inside, the general design of the dashboard remains familiar, although there are some notable changes. These include a unified widescreen display panel that that still houses a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, joined by either 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster on higher-end variants.

Elsewhere, the audio and air-conditioning controls have been combined into a single switchable touch panel like in the EV6. This allows for a larger storage cubby below and the addition of a full-width ambient lighting strip under the air vents.

2026 Kia Carnival facelift launching in Malaysia soon – MPV to stay diesel-only or gain petrol hybrid option?

Our Carnival is currently powered by a 2.2 litre Smartstream D2.2 four-cylinder turbodiesel engine making 202 PS (199 hp or 149 kW) and 440 Nm of torque, with drive going to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In markets that have already welcomed the facelifted model such as Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, buyers have the option of a hybrid powertrain. This is based around a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine paired with an electric motor for a total system output of 245 PS (242 hp or 180 kW) and 367 Nm.

Given the diesel subsidy rationalisation programme in our country that started in June 2024, which may have had a hand in dissuading potential Carnival buyers, could we also be getting a petrol hybrid option for the MPV? Thailand’s Carnival is hybrid-only and is imported from Malaysia, so there’s a likelihood we might get a hybrid option. Kia Sales Malaysia should be providing further details in due time, so stay tuned.

Kia Carnival Hybrid facelift at GIIAS 2024

The facelifted Kia Carnival has at last been launched in Thailand, some 15 months after it made its ASEAN debut in Indonesia (and a full two years after it was revealed globally). The tardy timing may have something to do with where the refreshed MPV is made – whereas other markets source their cars directly from Korea, the Land of Smiles gets its Carnival from Malaysia, according to Headlight Magazine.

Interestingly, the car – still CKD locally assembled at Inokom’s plant in Kulim, Kedah – is being offered in hybrid form only, ditching the 2.2 litre turbodiesel in favour of the petrol-electric setup currently utilised in the Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe. It’s not cheap, however, with prices ranging from 2,499,000 baht (RM325,300) for the Premium variant to 2,699,000 baht (RM351,400) for the Luxury, both with seven seats.

Power comes from a 1.6 litre Smartstream turbocharged and direct-injected (T-GDi) four-cylinder engine, producing 180 PS at 5,500 and 265 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. This is paired with a 54 PS/304 Nm electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission for a total system output of 245 PS and 367 Nm.

Kia Carnival Hybrid facelift at GIIAS 2024

The design is as per what was shown previously, adopting Kia’s Opposites United design language and featuring new front and rear fascias. Vertical LED headlights and the brand’s signature Star Map daytime running lights frame a much larger grille, while inverted L-shaped LED taillights and a lower number plate recess deliver a cleaner-looking back end. Distinctive 19-inch cubic black alloy wheels come standard.

Inside, the changes are more minimal – the fourth generation’s reasonably modern-looking cabin gains a unified widescreen display panel that still houses a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard, but the base analogue meter cluster has been replaced by a full-LCD unit with a 4.2-inch multi-info display, both housed under the same glass cover. The Luxury gains a 12.3-inch full-colour screen as before, along with a new digital rear-view mirror.

The upgraded Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) infotainment system is faster and now features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (previously wired only). Also fitted is a full-width ambient lighting strip under the full-width air vents, while the audio and air-con controls have been combined into a single switchable touch panel as per the EV6, freeing up space for a larger storage cubby. Elsewhere, the six USB ports throughout the vehicle are now of the USB-C kind.

Standard kit includes power-sliding doors, keyless entry, push-button start, triple-zone auto air-con, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, faux leather upholstery, a Qi wireless charger, six speakers, a 360-degree camera system and a proximity-sensing hands-free opening tailgate.

The Luxury adds projector “cube” headlights, fog lights, dual sunroofs, a head-up display, driver’s seat memory, second-row Premium Relaxation powered seats with ottomans and one-touch recline, first- and second-row seat ventilation, black and brown leather upholstery and a 12-speaker Bose sound system.

Safety-wise, the Carnival comes as standard with the full complement of SmartSense driver assists, such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist and blind spot monitoring with collision avoidance. Eight airbags (including a centre airbag) and stability control are also fitted across the board.

With the facelifted Carnival already being assembled in Malaysia, we expect the car to be launched here sooner rather than later. The decision to phase out the diesel engine in favour of a hybrid system makes sense for our market given the discontinuation of diesel fuel subsidies – helped further by the recent increased Budi95 subsidy for RON95 petrol. Are you excited?

  • GIIAS 2024: Kia Carnival Hybrid launched in Indonesia – 245 PS 1.6 litre turbo petrol hybrid, over RM400k!

GIIAS 2024: Kia Carnival Hybrid launched in Indonesia – 245 PS 1.6 litre turbo petrol hybrid, over RM400k!

The fourth-generation Kia Carnival facelift has made its public debut at this year’s Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), albeit with an update to variant line-up that sees a new turbo hybrid option. The refreshed MPV was first introduced in the country (fully imported from South Korea) back in May in Premiere and Dynamic variants, all with the same turbodiesel engine.

With the adjustments to the variant line-up, the Dynamic appears to have been dropped, while the Premiere is retained. This variant continues on with a Smartstream D 2.2 litre inline-four CRDi turbodiesel engine making 194 PS and 441 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic driving the front wheels.

The new addition is the Hybrid, which features a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine augmented by an electric motor to drive the front wheels. This combination results in outputs of 245 PS and 367 Nm, with a six-speed automatic being the transmission pairing. The turbo powertrain is similar to the one found in the Sorento Hybrid and was previewed in Singapore back in January this year.

As for seating arrangements, the Premiere is offered with seven (2+2+3 layout) or 11 seats (2+3+3+3) – the latter across four rows instead of three – while the Hybrid is only offered as a seven-seater. Official pricing for the Carnival Hybrid is 1.388 billion rupiah (about RM402k), which makes it even more expensive than the Dynamic that retailed for 960 million rupiah (about RM278k) as well as the Premiere that starts from 998 million rupiah (RM289k).

In terms of equipment, all variants of the Carnival facelift come standard with LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lamps, a smart power tailgate, dual sunroofs, dual 12.3-inch screens (instrumentation and a touchscreen for the infotainment system), a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, three-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, remote engine start, a surround view monitor and a wireless charging pad.

The Premiere 7-Seater gets 18-inch wheels, while the 11-Seater version as well as the Hybrid 7-Seater come with larger 19-inch units. The driver and front passenger seats of the three variants are powered and come with heating and ventilation functions, the former also found on the second-row seats. Specific to the Premiere 11-Seater and Hybrid 7-Seater are premium relaxation seats for the second row with electric adjustment, leg support and ventilation.

GIIAS 2024: Kia Carnival Hybrid launched in Indonesia – 245 PS 1.6 litre turbo petrol hybrid, over RM400k!

Advanced driver assistance systems that are fitted across the range include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and following assist, autonomous emergency braking with junction assist as well as blind spot monitoring and collision-avoidance assist.

Design changes for the Carnival are meant to evoke the latest Sorento and EV9, with highlight cues being with vertically-oriented LED headlamps that are framed by T-shaped daytime running lights. The latter extends into the top section of the reprofiled grille with a new insert pattern, while the rear taillights mimicking the front DRLs hug the corners of the MPV and extend into the tailgate.

Inside, a notable revision is a new touch panel under the infotainment screen that is similar to the one in EV6, whereby the climate and media controls are integrated into a single unit – you tap a button on the panel to switch between modes. Beyond this, the rest of the interior appears largely similar to before.

2024 Kia Carnival facelift previewed in Singapore – updated exterior, interior design; new 1.6 litre hybrid

In addition to the EV9, another Kia model that was at the recent Singapore Motorshow was the facelifted Carnival. The refreshed MPV, which made its global debut last October, was previewed ahead of an official launch later this year.

The car shown features a hybrid powertrain like the one in the Sorento Hybrid, which consists of a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine paired with an electric motor for a total system output of 245 PS (242 hp or 180 kW) and 367 Nm of torque.

This new-for-the-Carnival setup is expected to replace the 2.2 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel with 202 PS (199 hp or 149 kW) and 441 Nm in the pre-facelift Carnival that has since been discontinued in Singapore, likely for more favourable COE banding under the country’s Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES).

2024 Kia Carnival facelift previewed in Singapore – updated exterior, interior design; new 1.6 litre hybrid

The preview vehicle features a 2-2-3 seat layout with the second row having two powered captain chairs so passengers can fully recline, although sliding adjustments are still a manual affair. The third-row bench can be folded away in a 60:40 split to create a flat boot space.

One notable change to the interior that is part of the facelift is a new touch panel under the infotainment screen that is similar to the one in EV6, whereby the climate and media controls are integrated into a single unit – you tap a button on the panel to switch between them. Beyond this, the rest of the interior appears largely similar to before.

As for the exterior, there’s a new face that is reminiscent of the Sorento facelift and EV9 with vertically-oriented LED headlamps that are framed by T-shaped daytime running lights. The latter extends into the top section of the reprofiled grille with a new insert pattern, while the rear gets new taillights that mimic the front DRLs by hugging the corners of the MPV and extending into the tailgate.

In Malaysia, the Carnival is still sold in pre-facelift form with the 2.2 litre turbodiesel engine and a choice of seven, eight or 11 seats. The MPV is a locally-assembled (CKD) model here but it hasn’t been revealed when we will get the facelifted version. Do you like the look of the new Carnival? Should we also get the hybrid powertrain?

2024 Kia Carnival facelift exterior revealed – vertical headlamps, T-shaped DRLs; new 1.6 litre turbo hybrid

The new Kia Carnival facelift has been revealed in South Korea, bringing with it a new exterior design that appears to be inspired by the brand’s recent SUVs. The update comes just over three years after the fourth-generation (KA4) model – the one currently available in Malaysia – made its initial debut way back in June 2020.

At the front, the new face is reminiscent of the Sorento facelift and EV9 with its vertically-oriented LED headlamps that stacks up the lighting elements and sees the omission of the fog lamps in the lower apron.

The new headlamps are joined by T-shaped daytime running lights that extend into the top section of the reprofiled grille, which features more prominent horizontal slats instead of the pre-facelift model’s chrome-heavy insert.

Moving to the rear, the facelift introduces a new set of taillights that remind us of the latest Seltos. The redesigned clusters now hug the corners of the vehicle and have light bars that intrude into the tailgate, which is also new with simpler surfacing (no more exposed tailgate handle) and a number plate recess that sits lower than before.

New alloy wheels and an expanded colour palette that now includes Ivory Silver, Snow White Pearl, Astra Blue, Aurora Black Pearl, Pantera Metal and Ceramic Silver are also part of the facelift. Kia isn’t providing images of the interior just yet, but we can expect quite a number of changes to put it on par with the cabins of its recent models.

The company did note in its release that the Carnival will gain a 1.6 litre turbocharged hybrid option to its powertrain line-up, complementing the existing petrol and turbodiesel options, but isn’t divulging details for now.
