Freelander Concept 97 – Land Rover name resurrected by Chery; 3-row EV SUV, CATL battery, Huawei ADAS

Nearly 12 years since it left us, the Freelander name is back on a car – but it’s not a Land Rover. Instead, Chery has licenced the moniker from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on a new electrified brand to join its myriad of other marques. This is the first fruit of the Chinese giant’s labour, the Concept 97, referencing the debut of the much-loved original baby LR in 1997.

But there’s nothing baby about this Freelander, because it has grown into a full-sized SUV with three rows of seats. That much is reflected in the rectilinear styling, which is more akin to the Discovery 3 – another iconic “modern” Land Rover.

Still, the design does carry a few references to the seminal L314, most notably the split triangular rear three-quarter windows from the three-door cabriolet. In fact, the brand’s logo is made up of those triangles that represent “FL”, although the front and rear fascias instead have the Freelander script stamped on.

The minimalist face draws more cues from past Land Rovers, including interlocking rectangular headlights connected to black bars that go all the way down the bumper. From the looks of it, these actually house large displays that allow for customised lighting signatures; don’t expect these to make it to production, of course. The displays frame a silver section that stretches from the bonnet to the bottom, with little in the way of cooling openings and yet more triangular panels at the bottom.

Along the side, the Concept 97 features a strong stance thanks to square, almost Volvo-like shoulders and prominent wheel arch flares. The doors, which reach all the way to the roof, are suicide units that, together with the lack of B-pillar, provide uninterrupted access to the cabin. However, we already know the finalised version won’t have these, given that crash-tested prototypes were recently spotted with normal doors. The rear end carries slim horizontal taillights and a silver finish again for the tailgate and bumper.

Step inside and you’ll find an cabin unlike any Land Rover (or any Chery, for that matter). The minimalist is set low, framed by a wraparound display that stretches from pillar to pillar – mimicking BMW’s novel Panoramic Vision setup without the expensive projection technology.

You also get a large floating infotainment touchscreen underlined by physical controls, sitting above a centre console “bridge”. The plush seats, upholstered in blue and white woven fabric, are akin to lounge chairs, with the driver sitting behind and oblong steering wheel.

The Concept 97 carries six seats, with the second row featuring captain’s chairs and another substantial centre console. The third row, on the other hand, is formed by a wraparound backrest and wide headrests; good luck getting these to fold down. Freelander says the car also features a retractable cloth roof and rear window – another cue it has taken from that three-door cabrio.

“The new Freelander brand world and Concept 97 show car demonstrate a bold and individual approach to design which, combined with innovative Chinese technology, is intended to make customers fall in love with the Freelander brand,” said design hub director Phil Simmons. “Concept 97 is designed for the urban outdoors, retaining an off-road spirit while embracing city life. It celebrates freedom, individuality and joy.”

According to Autohome, all new Freelander models will feature Qualcomm’s new flagship-level Snapdragon 8397 chip, offering three times CPU computing power, nearly three times the GPU computing power, and twelve times the AI computing power of the previous 8295 processor.

They will also be juiced by CATL batteries and come with Huawei’s Qiankun autonomous driving capability, working in concert with a lidar sensor; the latter will almost certainly be exclusive to China. Unlike what was previously disclosed, Freelander will ditch Chery’s existing platforms in favour of a brand new architecture.

The cars will be built at Chery Jaguar Land Rover’s (CJLR) Intelligent Manufacturing Base in Changshu, where a total of three billion yuan (RM1.76 billion) has been invested for EV production. The brand is set to launch a whole family of models within the next five years and will be offered in key global markets. It’s been reported there will be six new cars that will also include range extender EVs and plug-in hybrids.

  • Jaecoo J8 facelift in China – badged Chery Tiggo 9, gains massive touchscreen, 261 PS 2.0T 4-cylinder

Jaecoo J8 facelift in China – badged Chery Tiggo 9, gains massive touchscreen, 261 PS 2.0T 4-cylinder

Launched in Malaysia just last year, the Jaecoo J8 is set to get a massive facelift ahead of the Auto China show in Beijing next month. Except it won’t be badged as a Jaecoo – instead, it will be known as the Chery Tiggo 9, as it has been for the past three years.

This car is not to be confused with the Tiggo 9 that we’ll be getting, which is offered in China as the Tiggo 9X (also, bizarrely, as the Tiggo 8L). Anyway, it gets a new front fascia with a more upright rectangular grille, the latter featuring more ornate vertical slats.

This is flanked by larger headlights with dual-L daytime running lights, as well as being framed by a black surround that reaches outwards towards the bumper corners, similar to the Tiggo Cross. Chrome accents help give the car a more upscale air.

At the rear, you’ll find thicker full-width taillights that push the number plate recess into the bumper, with the large Chery script taking its place. Finishing off the look are larger (and likely still fake) trapezoidal exhaust tips and a new multi-spoke wheel design.

Chery hasn’t provided any official interior images, but Autohome has already shot plenty of photos, revealing a mostly new cabin. Gone is the Mercedes-Benz-aping dashboard, replaced by a minimalist design that takes after many a Chinese SUV, with slimmer and sleeker air vents and a tall centre console continuing to house twin phone holders (one of which is still a Qi wireless charger) and open (previously lidded) twin cupholders.

The big news is that the freestanding widescreen display panel has been ditched. There’s still a large instrument display, but the infotainment touchscreen is now a massive single piece that extends to the passenger side, allowing the other front occupant to watch videos and the like. This is similar to what is found on the Mazda CX-6e.

Also fitted is a new two-spoke steering wheel from the Omoda C7, plus threaded connectors for attaching accessories such as a phone holder, similar to the latest Proton X50. The seats are also now quilted, and the front passenger pew has become a “queen seat” with a built-in ottoman and a one-touch “zero gravity” recline function. As before, the Tiggo 9 is available with two or three rows of seats, with a maximum of seven.

Autohome also reports that the car’s 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine has been retuned to produce 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque, up from 249 PS and 385 Nm. The J8’s eight-speed automatic transmission and choice of front- or all-wheel drive should also be carried over.

Given Jaecoo’s traditionally long lead times for bringing new models into Malaysia, expect the facelifted J8 to come next year at the earliest. It also remains to be seen whether the massive display will be brought over, as there has been instances of cars that had such screens in China (such as the GWM Wey G9) being shipped without them for exports.

  • Freelander teased – new EV/REEV brand with Land Rover name and design, Chery tech; March 31 reveal

Freelander teased – new EV/REEV brand with Land Rover name and design, Chery tech; March 31 reveal

In 2024, it was revealed that Chery struck a deal with its joint venture partner in China, Jaguar Land Rover, to licence the Freelander name for its own use. That was essentially JLR capitulating to its inability to respond to the advancement of Chinese brands, with Chery ironically being the tip of that spear.

From here on out, Chery Jaguar Land Rover will phase out locally-built JLR models in favour of the new Freelander series of EVs, previewed by a concept car set to debut in Shanghai on March 31, ahead of the Auto China show in Beijing the following month.

A few soft-focus teasers show that the as-yet-unnamed show car will continue to feature traditional Land Rover design cues, such as a boxy and upright body, interlocking square headlights and black round wheel arch flares. These are interspersed with some classic outlandish concept car touches, including suicide doors and large wheels with criss-cross spokes.

While the production version isn’t due out for some time yet, Autohome has already released some spyshots of a prototype that has undergone China New Car Assessment Programme (C-NCAP) crash tests. The mules sport some more production-ready headlights and a beefy Defender-esque front bumper, along with flush-fitting rectangular door pull cutouts and the ditching of the aforementioned suicide doors (sorry).

At the rear, the Freelander gets small square taillights and the “Freelander” script stamped across the tailgate; ditto the front bumper. Inside, the car gets an oblong steering wheel, a massive floating touchscreen with physical controls below it, the usual Chinese car dual phone holders and a distinctive full-width instrument display below the windscreen – similar to BMW’s Neue Klasse models like the new iX3 and i3, but without the expensive projection technology. One can also spot the lidar sensor atop the windscreen.

What’s clear is that Freelander models won’t be quite as off-road-capable as proper Land Rover models, given that they will ride on Chery’s ubiquitous T1X SUV platform, which underpins everything from the Tiggo Cross to the Jaecoo J8. However, the presence of six-lug wheels on the crashed cars indicates that some strengthening will have been performed to unlock a bit more ability.

While Freelander was created on the outset to be an EV brand, the prototypes bear the “REEV” label, confirming that the cars will be offered with a petrol range extender, at least as an option. It’s also been reported that the first model will be a large SUV with up to six seats.

Freelander will join a whole host of Chery SUV brands – in addition to the main marque, there’s also Jetour, Exeed and iCar. That’s even before you consider the export-only Omoda, Jaecoo, Lepas and iCaur divisions that it will have to compete with if plans for global sales come to fruition.

  • Geely Galaxy Battleship 700 – “AI-powered” 4×4 with PHEV powertrain, Beijing debut; up to 1,400 PS?

Geely Galaxy Battleship 700 – “AI-powered” 4×4 with PHEV powertrain, Beijing debut; up to 1,400 PS?

Having managed to stay away from the pseudo-hardcore 4×4 market currently dominated by Chinese brands, Geely has finally decided to wade into battle with the appropriately-named Geely Galaxy Battleship 700. The car, previewed by the Galaxy Cruiser concept at Auto Shanghai last year, is set to debut at Auto China in Beijing at the end of next month.

If these initial images are anything to be believed, then the boxy design – clearly inspired by the likes of the Land Rover Defender and Ford Bronco – has translated very well from show car to production. The upright glasshouse, wraparound windscreen look, kinked window line, broad shoulders and blistered squared-off wheel arches have all been retained, as has the full-width rectangular grille housing circular headlights, a horizontal light strip and an illuminated Geely Galaxy logo.

Also carried over are the beefy silver front bumper with orange recovery hook-like elements, chunky pull-type door handles and even the bonnet scoop. In fact, the only styling cues not to have made the cut are the clamshell bonnet and the driving lamps (replaced by circular…plastic pieces?), which aren’t huge losses. An external spare tyre can also be seen in some images.

We also get a glimpse of the interior with its enormous aeroplane throttle-like gear selector, flanked by toggles that presumably control the drive and off-road modes. Below these are a row of physical buttons for the variety of off-road features, such as a locking rear differential, low-range gearing and even a tank turn function similar to the GWM Tank 300 and 500, among many others.

The Battleship 700 is expected to utilise the same hugely-powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain as the Lotus Eletre X Hybrid and Zeekr 9X. The latter is available in dual- and triple-motor guises producing 897 PS and a whopping 1,400 PS respectively, with a 279 PS 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine helping to juice the 55 kWh or 70 kWh NMC battery. The car is also claimed to use AI technology to determine the right power source (petrol, electric or both) for a given terrain.

  • 2027 BMW 7 Series facelift teased – G70 LCI gains even more imposing face, ultra-luxe Alpina variant

2027 BMW 7 Series facelift teased – G70 LCI gains even more imposing face, ultra-luxe Alpina variant

The G70 BMW 7 Series was the car that defined just how big Munich’s double-kidney grille could be allowed to get, having grown to ridiculously porcine proportions during this generation. You’d think that the stinging reception the luxury sedan got during its launch (yes, we saw the memes) – and the opposite direction the company has taken since – would’ve necessitated a rethink with the facelift, set to debut next month.

However, a shadowy new teaser shows that BMW is sticking to its guns – and in fact, the firm is set to give its flagship luxury sedan an even more imposing front end as part of the refresh, or Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) in BMW speak. The nostrils are as humongous as ever, and just as with the latest X3, the illuminated surrounds now encircle the entirety of the grilles, rather than going dark in the middle.

The grilles themselves are even more angular than before, forming massive twin octagons. They are flanked by flatter eyebrow-style daytime running lights (apparently still featuring Swarovski crystals), and it appears the main headlights are still cast off into separate units lower down. This is the kind of look that will scream “get out of my way” in your rear-view mirror.

Not much else has been revealed in terms of details, but you can expect BMW’s biggest dog to come with the company’s latest and greatest tech. This includes the new Panoramic iDrive array of screens that debuted on the “Neue Klasse” iX3, consisting of a full-width Panoramic Vision projected display and a 17.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. The jaw-dropping 31.3-inch 8K rear Theatre Screen – already copied by rival Mercedes-Benz in its new VLE – should soldier on, too.

The new 7 Series will likely be offered with the same range of six- and eight-cylinder engines – including plug-in hybrid options – that have been updated to meet stringent Euro 7 emissions regulations. The electric i7, meanwhile, should get the latest battery and motor technologies from the Neue Klasse EVs for greater performance and a longer range. We hope that BMW also implements an 800-volt electrical architecture for much more powerful DC fast charging (up to 400 kW on the Neue Klasse models).

Reports also suggest that the 7 Series will spawn the first new model from the now BMW-owned Alpina brand – a new version of the B7. The comfort-oriented performance brand is set to compete with Mercedes-Maybach, and you should expect more power, a more deftly-tuned suspension setup, a sumptuous leather-lined interior and modernised versions of Buchloe’s trademark 20-spoke wheels and side stripes.

  • MG4X revealed – B-segment EV SUV takes on BYD Atto 2 with semi-solid-state battery, 510 km CLTC

MG4X revealed – B-segment EV SUV takes on BYD Atto 2 with semi-solid-state battery, 510 km CLTC

Chinese-owned British brand MG has revealed its latest EV, the MG4X, ahead of the Auto China show in Beijing next month. A B-segment SUV slotting below the MG S5, it sits within the MG4 family and aims to take on rivals like the BYD Atto 2 within a very competitive space in China. The “X” in its name signifies “infinite possibilities” beyond the standard MG4’s hatchback body style, according to Yiche.

The MG4X appears to take after the S5 in terms of body shape and rear end, but with a different front end unlike other MG models. The sharp triangular LED headlights are joined together by a full-width light bar, while a downturned air intake is framed by a bone-shaped black trim with corner inlets. Overall, it’s a much more aggressive design compared to the milquetoast second-generation MG4.

Not much can be seen of the interior, but we do at least know it will have a massive infotainment touchscreen, as is the norm in the Middle Kingdom. Like the MG4, the MG4X will be offered in China with smartphone screen mirroring and integration that’ll work with Oppo devices. Hopefully, the car will also nick the S5’s physical air-con and volume controls.

MG4X revealed – B-segment EV SUV takes on BYD Atto 2 with semi-solid-state battery, 510 km CLTC

CarNewsChina reports that the 4X measures 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide and 1,551 mm tall, making it 85 mm longer, 12 mm wider and 124 mm lower than the Atto 2. Its 2,750 mm wheelbase, meanwhile, is 130 mm longer, and is identical to the MG4’s.

As per the MG4 Anxin, the MG4X will come with a semi-solid-state battery that improves safety by being less susceptible to instances of thermal runaway. This is likely the same 53.95 kWh manganese-based lithium-ion pack as its hatch sibling, delivering a claimed range of 510 km on China’s lenient CLTC cycle. The car will also be offered with Horizon Robotics’ highly-autonomous driving technology in its home market.

While export plans have not been revealed, the MG4X could prove a very popular model globally as a more affordable electric crossover. That’s especially true in Malaysia, given that MG has recently begun CKD local assembly at the EP Manufacturing (EPMB) plant in Melaka – if the car does end up being built here, it will continue to enjoy import and excise tax breaks, allowing it to be priced below the magic RM100,000 mark.
