Vital, assured and moving, ‘I Beat Loneliness’ is full of magnetism and has an indomitable spirit that is full of fire that refuses to burn out, its intensity smoldering through every note and riff, relentless and alive with raw energy.

Digging its claws in after repeated listens, the result is a more nourishing experience that could have longer legs as time goes on.

It's not the most ambitious record in the world - at this stage in their career Bush don't seem to be trying to capture a new audience or to chase the zeitgeist - but I Beat Loneliness does give the impression of a band reaching out to the listeners they know are already there and offering the comfort of emotional understanding and musical familiarity. At its best, I Beat Loneliness is revelatory. Elsewhere, sadly, it’s rote. Gavin may claim to have beaten loneliness, but he’s been thwarted by his own ambitions.

While clearly a cathartic outing, most of it slips into pretty formulaic and repetitive territory. [Sep 2025, p.29]
