Elden Ring is simply a game that the player naturally adapts to their own style of play. Challenging at times, vicious at others, but mostly incredibly fun. The enjoyable pace makes the hours of play pass by like water, and each path opens up a few more, only to come together again after a fair amount of exploration before the next big reveal. Elden Ring is a superlative title, one of those works capable of becoming an event and becoming engraved in the collective imagination. It achieves this by remaining faithful to its formula and exporting its identity to the concept of the open world, achieving its own personal approach, resulting in a world that is visually stunning, and that works with overwhelming precision in terms of mechanics. An excellent videogame that also maintains the concreteness of its proposal.
Elden Ring packs its intricately crafted world - a world which should be used as a reference point for open-world design moving forward - with more impressive boss fights and secrets than you can shake a giant greatsword at. Although its punishing combat system may not be to everyone’s taste, it is an essential experience both for FromSoftware newcomers and seasoned veterans alike.
Elden Ring is a crowning achievement of over a decade of Miyazaki’s and FromSoftware’s work, and an amazing example of how to find a whole new level of fun in a well-known and somewhat worn-out formula. The open world turned out to be a perfect fit for the genre and you can still tell this masterpiece was created by the famous Japanese studio. I honestly haven’t been so excited about a game since the first Dark Souls.
Elden Ring feels like the natural evolution of a video game series that continues to reinvent itself after more than 13 years of its birth. FromSoftware is simply the best at what they do. While there are some technical issues and repetitive structures and creatures, Elden Ring is a cruelly wonderful piece of work and one of the best adventure games of recent years.
The years of waiting were worth it, Elden Ring is brilliant. It offers a huge amount of content, a beautiful world and addictive gameplay. But the series does start to feel a little bit stale.
Elden Ring needed to be fresh and bold, and
it succeeds, putting you in charge of your
own adventure. However the open world has
some uneven terrain. [Issue#12, p.80]
The first souls game ever that I had the nerves and energy to finish. It's not bad, that's for sure. But like all the souls games it is insanely overhyped in my opinion. For a 10/10 open world game there are too many things missing. There might be a story, but after 60 hours of play time I have pretty much no idea of what was happening other than me becoming the "Elden Lord" after slaying about 40 bosses with the same jump attack strategy. It's still locked to 60fps which is a no go for me. No PS5 controller support on PC as well (it works but you only see the XBOX signs, why??). Also I don't think it's an indicator for a good single player game when I have to read ten guides online and watch multiple youtube videos in order to understand the builds or basically how almost anything in this game even works on a basic level. Would give this a 8/10 but will give it a 7 to counteract the crazy fanboyism and overhype from so many people here.
The game is graphically gorgeous. I often found myself traversing the world just to see what was around the bend. That's kind of where my enjoyment ended though. I wasn't allowed to delight in leveling up, defeating bosses, or creating a great character build. **** game is far too punishing. The enemies in between destinations are spread out enough to be fun and challenging, and if you die, we'll it is easy enough to get back there to collect your dropped runes. But if you die in a location such as ruins, fortress or a cave/dungeon, the enemies are often overwhelming enough to take you down. Then you have to make it all the way back to where you bit the dust tore claim you dropped runes. Yes, you gotta walk back into the same hell hole that killed you **** what you lost the first time and it often kills you again causing you to lose your hard earned runes permanently. The controls are sluggish and the camera often is not dynamic enough to help you see your way out of trouble. The final nail in the coffin is the story, or lack thereof. There is not enough of it to grasp on to and make me understand why Im doing what Im doing, wandering around the vast, beautiful open world, or even really care. Your character is bland, the circumstances vague, and you wander aimlessly.
There are those this game was meant for. I was not one of them.
