Cheats and Secrets

This page contains a list of cheats, codes, Easter eggs, tips, and other secrets for Mario Paint. These cheats, unless otherwise noted, work for both the 1992 version of Mario Paint for SNES and for the 2025 version of Mario Paint for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Note the Switch versions of Mario Paint require a mouse, but Switch 2 can use Mouse Mode on the Switch 2 Joy-con.

Easter Egg: Title Screen Antics

Perform the following actions on the title screen for strange results.

  • Alternate Music - Click on the letter I or O in the word Mario.
  • Change Mario's Size - Click on the letter M in the word Mario Paint.
  • Color Title Screen - Click on the letter T in the word Paint.
  • Hidden Sounds - Click on the letter P in the word Mario Paint.
  • Hit Mario - Click on the letter A in the word Mario Paint.
  • Shake the Screen - Click on the letter I in the word Paint.
  • View Credits - Click on the letter N in the word Paint.
  • Walking R - Click on the letter R in the word Mario Paint.
  • Yoshi Cameo - Click on the letter A in the word Paint.

Easter Egg: Bring the Dog to Life

Click on the grid icon. The dog-shaped "undo" icon will come to life if you wait a bit.

Easter Egg: K.K.'s Song / Totaka's Song

On the title screen, wait for Mario to turn away. Click on him and you'll hear a strange song -- this song is also a secret song in many other games including Super Mario Land and the Animal Crossing series (where "K.K. Slider" appears as a character). This is a tune by Kazumi Totaka (who goes by K.K.) a composer for many games who includes this as a frequent Easter egg.

Unlockable: Right Mouse Button

Click on the N in Mario Paint on the title screen. As the credits roll, look for Programmer Noriaki Teramoto. Press the right mouse button and click on the N with the left button. This will unlock the right mouse button for use.
