2024 BMW X5 Reviews Summary

Our test vehicle for this review was the X5 xDrive50e, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the X5 midsize SUV, but it’s just one of several X5 models you can buy. Those with 40i in their name feature a satisfying turbocharged six-cylinder engine (with electric assist in the plug-in hybrid), while the M60i features a turbocharged V8 engine. Maximum performance is available in the comically fun X5 M Competition. Drive any of them, though, and it’s easy to understand why the X5 is BMW’s best-selling model.

Verdict: Newer BMWs are losing what has always made this automaker’s cars and SUVs appealing to people who like to drive. Fortunately, the 2024 BMW X5 hasn’t succumbed to the trend. In xDrive50e specification, it remains a delight to drive while supplying about 40 miles of electric-only range before its gasoline-fueled turbo six turns on.

2024 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The Rogue is Nissan’s entry into a crowded compact crossover SUV segment that includes well-known models like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4, to name a few. The 2024 Nissan Rogue debuts refreshed styling and gets a tech overhaul highlighted by Google built-in apps, marking their first appearance in a Nissan.

Verdict: New tech features may be the headline, but an impressive powertrain and interior are what really make the 2024 Nissan Rogue stand out.

Look and feel
2024 BMW X5
9/10
2024 Nissan Rogue
8/10

The 2024 BMW X5, last redesigned in 2019, maintained a stylish appearance, although the M Sport treatment was not universally appreciated, giving it a station wagon-like look. The test vehicle featured optional 21-inch wheels with staggered-width summer tires, which were considered a worthwhile upgrade despite the potential cost of tire replacement. The X5 offered a range of powertrains, including a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, a turbo-six PHEV powertrain, and a turbocharged V8 engine, with various trim packages and equipment options available. The xDrive50e M Sport model tested came with Brooklyn Grey paint and a comprehensive set of equipment packages, priced at $88,075. The 2024 model received a light styling refresh and introduced the BMW Curved Display, enhancing the interior's modernity while retaining high-quality materials and construction.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue underwent its first major styling update since its 2021 launch, maintaining the same trim levels: S, SV, SL, and Platinum. The new design featured a larger grille, stack headlights, and redesigned taillight elements. The Rogue SV received new 18-inch wheels, while the Platinum model boasted 19-inch wheels and additional black exterior trim. Interior updates included a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, giving the Rogue a more premium feel. The Rogue Platinum test car featured leather seats with quilted stitching, providing a luxurious touch. Despite the engine's impressive performance, the Rogue's CVT and suspension left room for improvement, with a firmer ride and less engaging handling compared to competitors.

Performance

The 2024 BMW X5 introduced new mild-hybrid engines and enhanced the xDrive50e PHEV's electric range and power output. The PHEV featured a more powerful electric motor and a 19.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering 38 miles of electric-only driving and 22 mpg in hybrid mode. The xDrive50e produced 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, accelerating to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The PHEV's adaptive damping air suspension masked its weight, providing excellent ride quality and handling. During testing, the X5 achieved 38.8 mpg over 95.5 miles, showcasing its efficiency and performance.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue's 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, a VC-Turbo, delivered 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, outperforming many competitors. However, the CVT was slow to transfer power, and the suspension felt firmer than expected, affecting ride quality without improving handling. The Rogue was quiet, but the engine's droning exhaust note detracted from the overall experience.

Form and function

The 2024 BMW X5 offered a spacious interior with room for five and a cargo area expandable from 33.1 to 71.2 cubic feet. The split liftgate design provided a convenient seating area but required stretching to access deep cargo. The test vehicle featured Sensafin artificial leather upholstery, sport seats, and the Climate Comfort Package, which included power-adjustable front seats, four-zone climate control, and heated features. The panoramic sunroof and side window sunshades enhanced passenger comfort.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue provided competitive passenger space, with slight differences in legroom compared to rivals. The Rogue's cargo space ranged from 36.5 to 74.1 cubic feet, offering less space than some competitors but more than others. The Divide-N-Hide system allowed for flexible cargo configurations, and the Rogue featured a power liftgate and motion-activated liftgate on higher trims. The center console offered additional storage, though access was somewhat awkward.

The 2024 BMW X5 featured a BMW Curved Display with a 12.3-inch digital panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen running iDrive 8.5. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, and over-the-air updates. The Intelligent Personal Assistant, however, struggled with voice recognition, leading to navigation issues. The head-up display and augmented video function provided useful driving information.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue offered an 8-inch touchscreen on lower trims, while SL and Platinum models received a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. The Rogue was the first Nissan with Google built-in, integrating Google Maps, Assistant, and Play Store. The system provided streamlined connectivity, though it required a data plan for third-party apps. The Rogue included multiple USB ports and a wireless charging pad on higher trims, with an extended free trial for Nissan Connect Services.

The 2024 BMW X5 introduced the Highway Assistant hands-free driving system, effective in certain conditions but occasionally causing errant braking. The X5 received high ratings from the IIHS, though lower headlight ratings prevented a safety award. The NHTSA gave it a four-star overall rating.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue received good safety scores from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. ProPilot Assist, available on higher trims, offered advanced driver assistance, though it required driver attention.
