2023 Ford F-150 Reviews Summary

This year, Ford expands the F-150 lineup yet again. The big news is the debut of the F-150 Raptor R, equipped with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine making 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. The new 2023 F-150 Raptor R also has exclusive R-tuned Fox live-valve shocks, standard 37-inch all-terrain tires, and a few other goodies to justify its six-figure price tag.

The other new version of the 2023 Ford F-150 is more accessible: the XLT Heritage Edition. It has two-tone paint, unique cloth seat inserts, and exclusive 75 Years interior details. That’s the subject of this review.

Look and feel
2023 Ford F-150
7/10
2023 Nissan Frontier
8/10

The 2023 Ford F-150 evidenced a well-recognized look during our test drive, outfitted with numerous options that elevated both its aesthetics and functionality. It featured the Ford’s blue-gray Area 51 paint, enhancing its familiar design that tactfully stays clear of controversial elements. The interior matched this extroverted simplicity, prioritizing function without excess, though attention to detail could be better as evidenced by creaking steering wheel controls and a flimsy feeling shifter due to the Ford Work Surface.

Conversely, the 2023 Nissan Frontier adhered closely to its preceding year's design, inspired by the rugged 1986 Nissan Hardbody. For this model year, it embraced a more audacious stance, especially with the introduction of a Midnight Edition that added blacked-out elements, providing a stark contrast to the usually brighter color palette; options like Baja Storm tan and Tactical Green stood out. Inside, the use of Lava Red accents in the Pro-X and Pro-4X trims injected a dose of sportiness not as prevalent in the Ford.

Performance

The F-150's twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 produced a robust 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. This power facilitated impressive towing capabilities, supported by a 14,000-pound maximum tow rating and a 3,315-pound payload. These figures, however, do hinge on the chosen configuration. The drive quality varied, tending to be smoother when loaded or towing, compared to a less composed ride when empty, especially on bumpier terrains.

In contrast, the Nissan Frontier’s performance revolved around its 3.8-liter V6 offering 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. While sufficient for the midsize truck segment, it didn’t quite match the might of the F-150. Its off-road oriented Pro-4X version, with a focus on comfortable drive dynamics, appealed to off-road enthusiasts with additional features like hill descent control enhancing its capabilities. The towing capacity was less than the F-150 at 6,720 pounds, showing a clear division in the trucks' purpose and potential utility.

Form and function

The F-150 we tested accommodated five adults comfortably, its interior enriched by flexible storage spaces including under-seat areas and dual glove compartments. The exterior was equally functional with options like the Pro Power Onboard system, though entering the cargo bed was deemed challenging without optional steps.

The Nissan Frontier, especially in the Pro-4X build, offered a feasible alternative in terms of functionality, positioned more aggressively for off-road activities with skid plates and enhanced cargo bed dimensions; the crew cab variant offered up to 46.4 cubic feet depending on bed length. The Frontier aimed to cater to practical usability with features like Zero Gravity seats and considerable storage solutions in the cab.

Ford's 2023 F-150 featured the advanced Sync 4 system with a 12-inch touchscreen, supporting over-the-air updates, a variety of connectivity options including wireless versions for certain apps, and a plethora of driver aids like the Pro Trailer Backup Assist. The technology suite presented a comprehensive package meant to enhance driving and usability.

Nissan’s approach in the Frontier focused on usability with standard and optional technology features including a class-leading 9-inch touchscreen in higher trims. Wireless Apple CarPlay became standard in these, alongside functional additions such as multiple USB ports and a potent Fender audio system, appealing to tech-savvy users without being overwhelming.

Safety
2023 Ford F-150

The F-150’s robust safety suite, Ford Co-Pilot360, included a vast array of driving aids from automatic high-beam headlights to adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, complementing the high safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS.

Nissan's frontier offered a solid, though optional, safety package with the 2023 model including fundamental safety functions like automatic emergency braking and available upgrades to introduce more comprehensive coverage. It scored respectable safety ratings, though generally a notch below the F-150.
