2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Reviews Summary

Jeep is now a luxury brand. That's why the 2022 Grand Cherokee L can ask, with a straight face, that you pay up to $70,000 for the privilege of ownership. But because Jeep is a proudly American brand, a war veteran that helped Allied troops defeat fascism, the company has earned the kind of unvarnished reputation and universal praise given only to a handful of U.S. presidents.

As such, a $60,000 Wrangler or a $100,000 Grand Wagoneer doesn't seem snooty, while a Mercedes-Benz or a Lexus sure does. Jeep's heritage as a hardcore 4x4 brand and its newer image as a bougie city truck maker can coexist. We took a Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve across Tennessee to prove it.

Look and feel
2022 Lexus GX
4/10
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eradicated almost all chrome from the exterior, transforming the SUV into a sleek, dark presence on the road. However, it took less than a day for a layer of dust to make the Lexus look old and shabby. Despite its modern touches like the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights, the GX's design felt dated, reminiscent of its first-generation predecessor from 2002. Inside, the cabin quality was impeccable, with smooth, refined materials and a quiet atmosphere, save for the faint roar of the V8 engine.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L was an elegant and recognizable Jeep, with a design that seamlessly integrated its extended length. The seven-slot grille, U-shaped wheel arches, and modern lighting gave it a sophisticated look. The interior was luxurious, with high-resolution screens, real wood, aluminum, and quilted Nappa leather. Even in all-black, the cabin had enough detail and contrast to keep passengers comfortable. The Grand Cherokee L's design and materials felt premium, making it a strong contender in the luxury SUV market.

Performance
2022 Lexus GX

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 featured a 4.6-liter V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight of 5,126 pounds, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds. The six-speed automatic transmission paired with a full-time 4WD system provided a stable and secure driving experience. However, its fuel economy was a drawback, with an EPA estimate of 16 mpg combined. The GX's Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System (KDSS) improved ride quality, but the slow, heavy steering and touchy brake pedal detracted from the overall driving experience. For off-road enthusiasts, the Off-Road Package added valuable features like Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered two familiar engines: a 3.6-liter V6 and a 5.7-liter V8, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6, producing 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, felt underpowered for the vehicle's size, especially when fully loaded. The V8, with 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, provided a more satisfying driving experience. Fuel economy for the V6 was decent at 21 mpg combined, while the V8 was less efficient at 17 mpg combined. The Grand Cherokee L's chassis was stellar, with a taut and direct steering feel. The optional air suspension offered five ride height settings, enhancing both on-road comfort and off-road capability. The Grand Cherokee L could tow up to 7,200 pounds with 4WD.

Form and function
2022 Lexus GX

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and clear outward visibility. Its tall, narrow, and short design made it easy to maneuver in various environments. The interior featured comfortable seats and well-placed padding, though some switchgear felt outdated. The Black Line Special Edition included NuLuxe upholstery, black ash wood trim, and a black headliner. However, accessing the rear seats was challenging due to narrow door openings, and the third-row seat was cramped and difficult to reach. The GX's cargo space was limited, with only 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row and 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L excelled in interior space and functionality. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system was user-friendly, with physical switches for climate and stereo controls. The Grand Cherokee L offered ample space in all rows, including the third row, which could comfortably accommodate adults. Second-row captain's chairs were standard, with a 60/40 split bench seat available as an option. The panoramic roof, large windows, and multiple USB ports enhanced passenger comfort. However, the air vents were small and struggled to direct sufficient airflow, requiring the fan to be kept on high, which was noisy.

Technology

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a significant improvement over the previous model. The system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and navigation. A CD player and a Lexus app with smartwatch compatibility were also available. However, the placement of the stereo controls below the off-roading controls was inconvenient. The voice recognition technology was excellent, and the dual-screen view was a useful feature. Standard Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view and terrain-view cameras added to the GX's technological offerings.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L boasted a wealth of advanced technology, especially in the upper trims. Features included multiple massage modes for the front seats, a head-up display, night vision with pedestrian and animal detection, and a crystal-clear 360-degree camera system. The Active Driving Assist system provided excellent steering on marked highway lanes. The navigation system could take over the instrument panel, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard. New for 2022, Jeep added an optional 10.3-inch touchscreen for the front passenger and dual 10.1-inch touchscreens with Amazon Fire TV for rear-seat passengers. Standard driver aids included adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking.

Safety

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX, despite its age, came equipped with Lexus Safety System+, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additional features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services. However, the GX lacked some modern safety technologies found in its competitors, such as lane-keeping assist and semi-autonomous driving systems. There were no crash-test ratings available for the GX.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L had not yet been tested by NHTSA or IIHS. Standard safety features included driver and passenger knee airbags, a rear seat alert, trailer sway control, and various driver aids. Higher trims offered additional safety technologies like automatic parking, front cross-traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition. The Summit Reserve trim included a rear-facing camera to monitor the second and third rows.
