Lawrence Lessig on Creative Commons and the Remix Culture

Lawrence Lessig is a Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and chairs the Creative Commons project.

People have always 'remixed' the culture that they encounter around them, whether they are William Shakespeare incorporating elements of Greek and Roman mythology into one of their plays, John Williams adapting a piece of classical music in producing a new film score, my daughter 'being' Barbie or Angelina Ballerina, or you and I talking about and around something we saw on television last night.
The Remix Culture is, therefore, an important part of our everyday lives, and it is challenged by the ways in which existing laws are interpreted in the digital age.
In this conversation, we discuss what the Remix Culture is, some of the ways in which it is being constrained, and the way in which efforts such as the Creative Commons seek to offer an alternative to the increasingly restrictive 'permission culture' growing up around us.
