Proton to assemble electric motor, hybrid transmission for EVs in Tg Malim – supports MITI’s NAP stance

Proton has confirmed it will assemble key electrified vehicle components such as the electric drive unit and dedicated hybrid transmission for its models in Tanjung Malim as part of an expansion of vehicle and powertrain manufacturing capacity at its plant in Perak.

This was announced in DRB-Hicom‘s media release sent out earlier this evening following the statement issued by the ministry of investment, trade and industry’s (MITI) yesterday, in which the ministry reaffirmed the country’s automotive investment and sector policies, in response to the BYD CKD topic that emerged earlier in the week.

Proton said that the local assembly of these key components will support the company’s range of electrified vehicles, including hybrid and electric models. No other details (scale, timeline) were revealed, with the company only saying that these advanced manufacturing and technology capabilities will be anchored by the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV) development, with the automaker playing a central role in positioning AHTV as a national hub.

The company said AHTV will serve as a focal point for advanced manufacturing, talent development and research and development, all of which are aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s long-term competitiveness in future mobility. It said that the project, along with other efforts, reflect its commitment to advancing local expertise, accelerating technology transfer and positioning Malaysia as a competitive player in the global transition towards electrification.

The company added that as Malaysia’s first homegrown automotive original equipment manufacturer, it has played a pivotal role in developing the nation’s supporting vendor network, with its commitment to the local ecosystem reflected through a local purchase value of more than RM17 billion over the last five years (2021–2025), and this is projected to rise to approximately RM30 billion over the next five years (2026–2030).

The brand said it would continue to work closely with key stakeholders, including ministries and government agencies, to ensure its strategies and investments remain aligned with the broader national agenda outlined via the National Automotive Policy (NAP).

“We are fully committed to supporting the government’s long-term industrial and mobility aspirations by strengthening the local automotive ecosystem, developing Malaysian talent, and contributing to sustainable industry growth,” said Proton chairman and DRB-Hicom group MD Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar.

“Through close and continuous collaboration with the government and industry stakeholders, Proton will continue to play its role in ensuring Malaysia’s automotive industry remains relevant and competitive as it evolves,” he added.
