Nissan to sell US-built Murano in Japan from 2027

Nissan has announced it will begin selling the United States-built Murano in Japan beginning early 2027. As with Honda and Toyota, Nissan is using the new certification system for US-made passenger vehicles established by Japan’s ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism in February 2026.

The new system allows for cars that have been certified by US regulators to be imported into Japan and sold without any additional local safety tests. This is part of an agreement reached in the course of tariff negotiations between the US and Japan last year.

At present, the fourth-generation Murano is built at the company’s Smyrna plant in Tennessee alongside the fifth-generation Pathfinder, with the move reportedly meant to soak up the excess capacity at the underutilised facility. The Murano is currently not sold in Japan.

“I’m excited to share with you that Murano is coming back to Japan. The Murano has earned high praise from customers in the US market for its elegant design and exceptional comfort. It was named the most dependable midsize suv in the JD Power 2026 US Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) for the second year in a row. With the introduction of this model, Nissan aims to further strengthen its product lineup in Japan and meet the diverse needs of Japanese customers,” said Ivan Espinosa, president and CEO of Nissan.

so this is the outcome of being an american vassal. japan , taiwan, southkorea were all forced to move their investments and assets to usa . it would be like proton setting up a factory in usa, paying their workers USD then shipping the cars back to malaysia to sell .

  • Can’t wait for this car to come in on the recon market! If the price is right, looks impressive and far more interesting than those generic China cars.
