2026 Proton X90 MC – five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating downgraded to 1-star due to removal of ADAS

2026 Proton X90 MC – five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating downgraded to 1-star due to removal of ADAS

ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries) has announced it is downgrading the safety rating of the new Proton X90 MC to a one-star rating. For context, when the X90 was first launched back in May 2023, it received a five-star rating.

According to ASEAN NCAP, the reason for the downgrade is the lack of essential advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in the updated model. Previously, the X90 was offered with autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring and more.

However, the MC update stripped away all of that, with all three available variants not having any form of ADAS. This did not sit well with ASEAN NCAP, which said that under its 2021-2025 protocol, “a vehicle’s star rating is restricted if it performs poorly in any single category, ensuring all-round protection.”

“The removal of these technologies has caused the safety assist (SA) score to drop to a four-star level, while the motorcyclist safety (MS) category— which relies heavily on blind spot detection – has plummeted to a one-star rating. Consequently, the Proton X90’s overall rating is capped at one-star,” the assessment programme said in its release posted today.

2026 Proton X90 MC – five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating downgraded to 1-star due to removal of ADAS

The lack of ADAS (and other features) has resulted in a lower starting price by as much as RM30,000, with the X90 MC going for between RM99,800 and RM115,800 on-the-road without insurance. Under its visually unchanged exterior, there is a new turbocharged inline-four engine that replaces the previous three-cylinder unit with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

The director general of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Siti Zaharah binti Ishak, commented, “We deeply regret Proton’s decision to remove life-saving ADAS technologies from the new facelift model. To protect consumers and maintain the integrity of safety standards, we have no choice but to revoke the 2023 five-star rating.”

“This serves as a reminder to all manufacturers: safety is not a trade-off. Do not sacrifice proven safety technology for face-value luxuries like infotainment systems or leather upholstery,” she added.

This is not the first time that Proton has downgraded safety features. It removed the side airbags from the Exora in 2017, and it was never offered again until the MPV was discontinued. We should also point out that unlike the pre-MC X90, Proton did not communicate anything about safety ratings in its marketing materials.

Comments

  • AI-generated Summary ✨

Comments largely focus on the importance of ADAS and active safety features, emphasizing that removing them from the Proton X90 MC downgrades its safety rating and compromises road safety for everyone, including pedestrians and other drivers. Many express disappointment and criticism toward ASEAN NCAP’s decision to penalize the vehicle for lacking ADAS, arguing that safety isn't solely dependent on such tech and that the car's core safety features remain intact. Some highlight that ADAS benefits all road users and that its removal reflects a step backward in safety standards, while others point out the inconsistency with other models like the Xpander. Overall, sentiments are mixed but lean towards concern that safety and responsible driving should not be sacrificed for cost savings or market positioning.

The Proton X90 didn’t suddenly become unsafe — the new ASEAN NCAP protocol simply puts much heavier weight on ADAS.
Less driver-assist tech means a lower score, even if the structure and airbags are still solid.

I think the aspect of ‘unsafe’ in this case is towards other motorists. The context of the NCAP 5 Star certification takes into account not only the car’s occupants, but the safety of others on the road.

Blind spot monitoring/lane centering is the only safety feature that protects the motorists on the rear sides of the vehicle. Hence that safety aspect has been removed.

ADAS system is a suite. It is not a standalone, single function of the car. Simple things like Auto emergency braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning systems, even pedestrian safety all require ADAS to work. So removing ADAS is a big deal in terms of the vehicle’s overall safety. It is akin to removing the eyes from a person.

not everyone is Lewis Hamilton. So while you may have amazing driving skills, it doesnt change the fact that most average drivers on the road would benefit from ADAS system, in one form or another. When every car plays a part, it makes the road a little safer for everyone else, too. ie. school children who may be crossing the street while a distracted driver glanced on his phone.

According to the new ASEAN NCAP rules, a car without enough beeping sensors is “unsafe”.

Star ratings change when the rulebook changes — that’s what happened to the Proton X90 under ASEAN NCAP.
The structure didn’t suddenly disappear, only the ADAS points did. Good thing the Proton X90 still has steel, airbags, and physics on its side.

It is not highly weighted; it is simply based on the principle that the car is as safe as its weakest link … to encourage no compromise in any area.

I own a coming to decade old car, not because I want to, not because I only can afford it, but because I’m so sick of driving with all the electronic fangle dangle, automations, and touchscreens in new cars. Everytime I drive any newish vehicle, my opinion is the so called safety systems are way more likely to distract me rather than save me. Random braking at shadows or when accelerating out of junctions, controls operated by touchscreens needing MORE time with eyes off the road, random beeping distractions… When I saw the new specs of the base model x90, I couldn’t be happier. Not rushing off to buy one yet, but I am hoping more makers will follow suit. Give us the option, at least on the base model, not to overpay for overpriced overrated tech. Having said that I think proton made a huge mistake not to leave the tech available on the top model for those people who actually do enjoy it.

Malaysia has a problem. With perodua and now proton, people whom have no business owning cars are doing so. given than “sense” has long stopped being common and chivelry, respect and patience on roads have long diminished because the literal number of idiots being enabled to drive has statistically overpowered people whom have the necessary maturity and upbring to drive with the previously meantioned traits. hence core ADAS (Like A.Emegency Braking) unfortunately are required to balance the imcompetency of the mindless screen vacummned people and ensure the remaining few proper driver dont waste a whole day in making reports/claims or worse a trip to the morgue.

Whatever the argument may be about safety vs price ( profits), ADAS and related technology have been shown to reduce accidents and save lives. Proton seems to have opted for profits over safety which is very sad . As a national car company they should show more responsibility .
As an analogy, In the field of medicine there is a phrase called “Standards of Care” . To put it simply a treatment that was widely established as correct and accepted 5 ,10 or 15 years ago evolved and become outdated, to be replaced by new modalities based on newer trials and data. 10 years ago ADAS was not yet the Standard of Care ( or safety) .
    Now it is .

I think some of the comments here totally misunderstood the importance of ADAS…
ADAS is not just meant for your safety alone… your car may equip with 6 airbags & whatnot but it will pose a dangers to others if u drive recklessly without any interception & prevention from the active safety assist… you may microsleep while driving & just ram a bunch of motorcyclist waiting at redlights, without any intervention to alerts u or reduce the impact…

  • Proton are dropping the X90 target market from potential CX5/CRV owners looking for an extra row to duking it out with Xpander & BYD M6. Unfortunately, they remove the ADAS which I consider a mistake, but I guess this is the best they can do for that target price.

The 1-star rating is the protocol from ASEAN NCAP, the cars need to be around the same level in all categories, instead of being great at others but dropping one category all together. I think they failed the motorcycle avoidance, without blind-spot detection, etc.

Xpander got their 4-star rating before the update on the rules. So, the comparison is not apt.

Does this mean the X90 is worse than Myvi? In some way it is, for example, when it comes to accident prevention, which is what ADAS is mostly all about. Of course, I would rather be in an X90 rather than a Myvi if a motorcycle ram into the car.
