Firefly in Thailand – Nio’s city EV with 143 PS, 330 km WLTP range, RM86k estimated; Malaysia possible?

Nio’s city car subdivision Firefly has made its debut in Thailand, with an official launch slated for the Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) on March 23. The small electric hatchback arrives in the Land of Smiles four months after production of right-hand-drive units kicked off in November, and two months after its launch in its first right-hooker market of Singapore.

Carrying an estimated price of 700,000 baht (RM86,200), the Firefly is powered by a single rear motor producing 143 PS (105 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. A 42.1 kWh LFP battery delivers a range of 330 km on the WLTP cycle, and with support for up to 100 kW of DC fast charging, topping up the pack from 10 to 80% charge takes 29 minutes.

As with other Nio vehicles, the Firefly supports battery swapping technology and is available with battery subscription in China to lower the initial purchase price, similar to the Perodua QV-E. However, both these features have yet to be offered in global markets.

The Firefly eschews the overtly cutesy one-box designs popularised by many Chinese EV makers, in favour of a more Euro-centric two-box aesthetic. Details include distinctive triple round LED head- and taillights, clean surfacing and a thick C-pillar “band” emphasising the black roof.

Firefly’s minimalist styling ethos continues on the inside, where you’ll find a plain horizontal dashboard sitting below a tier of air vents. There’s no centre console as such, just a single cupholder and a storage tray between the front seats, allowing occupants to move from one side to the other. You also get hidden storage under the rear seats, a large 404 litre boot and even a 91 litre front boot.

Simple and small it may be, but the Firefly can be had with plenty of kit. The tech on offer includes a six-inch instrument display and a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, and you can spec things like powered, ventilated and massaging front seats, a panoramic glass roof, Level 2 semi-autonomous driving functionality with auto lane changes and even a 14-speaker surround sound system with Dolby Atmos support.

With Firefly making its way across the ASEAN region, could we see it being offered in Malaysia soon? As ever, this will hinge on whether Nio plans to assemble cars here (unlikely), as CBU fully-imported EVs are now not only subjected to import and excise duties, but also a RM250,000 floor price that would make this entry-level model financially unviable.

Not really (Try comparing other same classed one ugly than other cars e.g. BMW vs Merc), but then Firefly easier to use and more power efficient if I’m correct.
