Malaysian-built Peugeot 408 exported to Taiwan – Stellantis Gurun plant also supplies Thai, Cambodia

Stellantis has announced exports of the Peugeot 408 from Malaysia to Taiwan, which will be the third Asian market for the Gurun-assembled model after Thailand in 2024 and Cambodia in 2025.

The 408 is powered by an updated 1.6-litre PureTech turbo engine with a Euro 6 rating. This configuration delivers an upgraded 225 hp (the 408 in our market has 218 PS), similar to the plug-in hybrid variant while maintaining a lighter 168 kg kerb weight, Stellantis says.

Supported by a 1.5 million euro (RM7 million) investment, the Stellantis Gurun plant has undergone a manufacturing line upgrade, including specialised R&D for powertrain calibration and localised parts development. Additional markets across the Asia Pacific region are currently being evaluated for exports.

“Our vision to transform Gurun into a key regional driver is taking shape, supported by strategic investments to upgrade this vital facility for both local and export production. This latest development emphasises our commitment to scaling production outputs in Malaysia while extending the breadth of brands and models within the Stellantis portfolio to meet the diverse needs of the region,” said Isaac Yeo, MD of Stellantis ASEAN.

Stellantis says that it aims to achieve full production capacity at Gurun, targeting the export of 280,000 vehicles to 20 countries across Asia Pacific by 2028. The plant is capable of making full EVs, ICE models and mild hybrids. The factory in Kedah will also host CKD assembly of Leapmotor EVs, starting with the C10 SUV following a dedicated 5 million euro (RM23.4 million) investment.
