The ministry of investment, trade and industry (MITI) is considering requiring companies bringing in fully imported (CBU) electric vehicles to help install more EV charging facilities, said its minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, reported Free Malaysia Today.
This move could become a future requirement to support EV growth and access to EV charging nationwide, Johari said in the Dewan Rakyat. “For any CBU-imported cars, we want them to also play a role in providing these facilities,” he said.
As of December 31, 2025, there are a total of 5,624 public chargers installed nationwide, or 56% of the 2025 target of 10,000 public chargers set by the government, Johari said. Of these, 1,923 DC fast chargers have been installed, surpassing the 1,500-unit target for DC charging points, while AC chargers lagged behind at 3,701 units, or about 43% of the 8,500-unit target, the minister said.
“The availability of fast chargers is the main factor influencing users’ confidence to switch to electric vehicles,” said Johari, who said that prioritising installation of DC chargers is crucial to building consumer trust. The minister also encouraged EV owners to install chargers at home, according to the report.
With the shortfall coming from the lower rate of AC charger installation, the Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association (MyZEVA) estimated in 2024 that the target for 8,500 public AC chargers would only be met in the third quarter of this year.
Among the EV brands in Malaysia with their own charging network is Tesla, which secured exemption from having a local partner for its franchise AP under the BEV Global Leaders programme in 2023.
A requirement for Tesla’s exemption was that at least 30% of its DC fast chargers (with a minimum of 180 kW) are open to the public, and for use by EVs from other brands from 2025, but this has yet to happen as Tesla Superchargers are still only accessible by Tesla vehicles.

At first, you said there’s gonna be alot of privatise company and enterprise agreed and contracted to allocate/build/ready all this charging stations and be increasing onwards, and then the tax honeymoon over.
U create a stupid RM250k selling price mileage for the cbu ev to help your baby Proton and P2. To sayang ur babies… then of coz the vehicle that could match those criteria will be lesser and then of coz the earlier so call company/enterprise who said they will be doing all this charging centre will fall back and take a look first la! If there’s not much demand, you do so many port for who?! GHOST CAR? now even the P2 QVE is half bake!

Hello Miti. You think Malaysia is such a gem place to impose at your whims and fancy? They will leave en-masse when the costing do not work out. Know your cards, you already let too many brands masuk and you think they sell several hundred units a month is a big feat?
If you don’t let competition in from the outside you get trash from Perodua like the Traz or the utter humiliating flop that is the QV-E. It is because of intense competition from the EV Chinese makers that greedy Toyota, Honda and the rest of them have started offering heavy rebates. You block the competition and you get unbridled greed from P1 and P2. Furthermore Malaysia positions itself as a unique locale through tax cuts and other incentives that make car markers like Stellantis group to consider Malaysia as a hub for parts manufacturing for a big portion of the whole asean region.
All they want is this straight road to sell cars – you telling them to belok-belok with all these requests, better they don’t sell at all – more monopoly for the local 2!
More importantly the gomen should enforce every new housing project, especially condos to engage vendors and install AC chargers for their car parks at each level. The ratio of units per block vs the EV slots should also be codified. Too many thieving developers out there who promise EV slots but do nothing once the VP has started, still no slots months after VP is done. These developers should be fined and their executives put behind bars. Sunway group is one such thief.
