JPJ seizes 6 luxury cars incl 1 with fake number plates

The road transport department (JPJ) yesterday seized six luxury cars with a RM1.5 million total estimated value for various offences on the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1) near Karak, including one with fake number plates, Bernama reports.

“Inspection found that the luxury car was using a registration number that did not match the vehicle’s actual records. This raises suspicion of an attempt to avoid enforcement action.

“Further investigations also found that the main motive of the driver was to avoid detection by the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) cameras,” JPJ senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said, adding that the vehicle in question didn’t have valid road tax nor insurance.

JPJ seizes 6 luxury cars incl 1 with fake number plates

JPJ has been incessantly cracking down on errant luxury cars for about half a year now

The fake number plate offence is being investigated under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a RM5,000-RM10,000 fine, in addition to other related legal actions. The offences committed by the other five luxury cars included not having a driving licence, road tax and/or insurance.

Besides the luxury cars, the JPJ also seized 15 cars, eight high-powered bikes, 102 bikes below 250 cc, a van and a lorry, and issued 1,203 saman during the 6am-1pm Ops Khas (special operation).

Ops Khas involved cooperation between JPJ Pahang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and headquarters, with support from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and local authorities. A total of 183 JPJ personnel were deployed, with enforcement focused on LPT1 covering the Gombak to Karak stretch,” said Muhammad Kifli.

Fake number plate = RM5k to RM10k fine?? This is music to criminals’ ears! Whether car owners dodging enforcement or robbers and hitmen using false vehicle identification, such a tiny inconsequential penalty is no obstacle to criminals.

If the authorities want to stamp out such menace, mandatory seizure and destruction of vehicles with false (and misleading) number plates is the only way.
