Chery Tiggo 8 launched in Malaysia – non-Pro variant comes with Tiggo 7’s 1.6T, different rear/dash, RM130k

Chery Malaysia has introduced a new Tiggo 8 variant. Simply called the Tiggo 8 without the ‘Pro’ designation of the seven-seater SUV we’re familiar with, it’s a base variant priced at RM129,800 on-the-road without insurance.

The big change is under the hood, where the non-Pro Tiggo 8 comes with the 1.6-litre turbo-four that also powers the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and Jaecoo J7 SUVs. The 197 PS/290 Nm engine is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. For context, the Tiggo 8 Pro‘s 2.0T engine puts out 256 hp/390 Nm. Late last year, Chery introduced the Tiggo 8 PHEV to top the range.

The T8 looks familiar from the front, but the rear end has a different look thanks to lights that are no longer joined by an LED strip. The lights themselves are also different, and the Chery script logo is placed higher. The quad pipes have been swapped for one tip on each side. The wheels are 18-inch items with 235/55 tyres, an inch down from the T8P’s 19s – they still look adequate.

The dashboard also differs from the Pro’s conjoined screen horizontal layout. Here, the 10.25-inch digital meter and 12.3-inch infotainment screen live separately, and there’s another screen down below for the AC controls. The centre console has the same style as the Tiggo Cross. This older rear end and interior are similar to the Tiggo 8 that was previewed back in 2022, although that car was a 2.0T ‘Pro Max’.

The dash design might be older, but the standard kit list still includes an eight-speaker Sony audio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, double-glazed acoustic glass, dual-zone auto air con, powered sunroof with sunshade and a 360-degree camera. There’s also an auto-dimming mirror, ambient lighting and electric front seats with memory for the driver. Only two colour options – Dark Black as seen here or Khaki White.

In the safety department, the non-Pro gets six airbags instead of nine, with the driver knee unit and rear side bags sacrificed. The more basic ADAS pack is missing lane keeping, integrated cruise control and traffic jam assist – no Level 2, basically. Full spec sheet below.

The RM129,800 Tiggo 8 comes with a vehicle warranty of seven years or 150,000 km, and an engine warranty of 10 years or one million km. Also in are five years of all-inclusive free service and a one year Chery Insurance Programme. The SUV will be available at Chery showrooms nationwide from January 24.

Doesn’t the term Pro in Chery refers to facelift? Am I wrong? What is the right one?

Make 1.5na tiggo cross press down the price under rm70k before proton does. Those turbo,, hybrid, phev were unnecessary too many. At rm130k i will buy the cx5 2.0 mid

err.. i wouldn’t be too excited about buying chery or Jaecoo brand. today i buy one model less than 6 months, new model or variant comes out. my car feels like already obsolete. resale value, i take tahu how it will fall and whether i will still have spare part after 3 years… so dangerous to consider driving these vehicles considering these factors.
