Gotion to produce EV batteries in Johor, Malaysia?

Johor chief minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has revealed on Facebook that the state government is in the final stages of discussion with Gotion High-Tech to establish an EV battery manufacturing facility in Johor, Bernama reports. Gotion is a Chinese battery maker that’s part-owned by the Volkswagen Group.

“The establishment of the facility would position the state as a regional hub for electric vehicle battery production and energy storage systems. The state government sees the move as a long-term investment that is expected to directly benefit Johoreans, in line with the aspirations of the green energy transition and sustainable economic development,” he said.

He added that Gotion would serve as the lead original equipment manufacturer and technology provider, encompassing battery pack manufacturing, module integration, as well as high-value activities across the battery technology and energy management value chain.

“God willing, this collaboration will support the green energy transition agenda, strengthen Johor’s economic competitiveness and ensure that the people will benefit through job creation, higher incomes and a more sustainable future,” said Onn Hafiz.

In May 2025, Sapura Industrial Berhad announced a joint-venture with China’s Zhejiang Zhongze Precision Technology to produce EV battery components in Malaysia, specifically high-precision storage battery casings.

The former will handle corporate, licensing, environmental and regulatory matters, and source a suitable location for the plant, while the latter will provide machinery, technical expertise, training and customer support.
