Speed limiter compliance has surpassed 48% – Loke

Speed limiter compliance has surpassed 48% – Loke

Transport minister Anthony Loke has said that compliance for speed limiter devices (SLD) on commercial vehicles in Malaysia is 48.37% as of December 1, a stark jump from just 2.68% when enforcement began on October 1, Bernama reports.

He attributed this to the road transport department‘s (JPJ) strict enforcement in the first phase, which covers express buses, tour buses and heavy goods vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kg.

“The transport ministry will continue to enforce the use of SLD strictly in order to achieve better compliance. Installation and verification of these devices must be carried out by authorised certifiers recognised by JPJ,” he said, adding that 307 such certifiers have been registered nationwide as of November 15.

Vehicle owners must submit SLD verification slips and functional reports at Vehicle Inspection Centres, as well as keep these documents in their vehicles for roadside inspections.

Loke also said that the government is developing a telematics system to be integrated with the SLD, allowing for more effective monitoring of heavy vehicle movements and driver behaviour. This is still in the proof of concept phase, whereas GPS is already compulsory for buses and heavy vehicles.

“We are looking at various models to develop this system. The proof of concept is ongoing, and telematics has not yet been made mandatory. However, it may be phased in in the future,” he said, adding separately that Malaysia will not issue permits for foreign express buses, including Singaporean ones.

Check also the percentage of the limiter being removed illegally after installation. I am sure you can find plenty of it.
