Yup, according to Reuters citing Bloomberg, Tesla is – finally, if you can believe it – working on having Apple CarPlay in its cars. No mention of Android Auto (yet?), so it seems Tesla owners who use Android phones will have to continue doing without it for now.
According to people with knowledge of the matter, the carmaker has started internal testing and has discussed rolling out CarPlay in the coming months, but is yet to finalise a plan. Tesla reportedly plans to feature CarPlay within a window inside its broader interface (instead of a full takeover). Wireless connection will apparently be supported.
Bloomberg writes that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has criticised Apple for years, particularly its App Store policies, and was angered by Apple poaching his engineers when it set out to build its own car. However, CarPlay (and rival Google’s Android Auto) are quickly becoming very sought-after vehicle features.
Tesla cars currently run a proprietary infotainment system that has navigation, messaging, web browsing, Apple Music, Spotify and integration with Grok – Musk’s xAI chatbot.
