Malaysia and USA reach Agreement on Reciprocal Trade – US passenger cars for Malaysian market?

The governments of Malaysia and the USA have reached an agreement on an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, as announced today in a joint statement.

You can read the full joint statement here. Naturally as an automotive content site, we immediately scanned through the contents of the statement for anything related to passenger cars. After all, one can dream of seeing American muscle cars roaming our roads with tax-free pricing?

There are two points for now. Firstly, Malaysia has committed to provide significant preferential market access for US goods including passenger vehicles. There are no details on what significant preferential market access is for now.

At the moment, the only CBU cars imported into Malaysia from the US are a bunch of BMW and Mercedes-Benz SUVs such as the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz GLS, EQE SUV, EQS SUV, AMG GLE, and others. Tesla cars for the Malaysian market are imported from China, not the USA.

The next point is Malaysia has committed to accepting U.S. manufactured vehicles built to U.S. motor vehicle safety and emissions standards.

To our knowledge, Malaysia currently uses the European-centric UN ECE standards for homologation. Perhaps this means SAE/DOT standards will be accepted too after this.

This is an interesting point because if US standards are automatically approved, could this open the doors for Tesla to offer the Tesla Cybertruck here in Malaysia? Or would it be easier for Full Self Driving subscription to be offered, since it already passes US regulations? FSD is already available in right hand drive form for HW4 cars in Australia and New Zealand.

No details yet, and this will be ironed out over the next few weeks, but it’s certainly an interesting potential development to watch out for.

We get our cars from China, Japan, German and Sweden. Other than Tesla we only need KFC, Burger King and McDonald from usa.

    • Then be ready to pay 6 times the price, to match the cost of US salary and production cost. Even US citizens are not simps to us products at that cost.

If u read the full text, the agreement is soooo lop-sided in favouring US…. More like Trump is forcing things down the throat of MY..
Not like US made cars are great, they are very far from it…and dont think we need silly muscle cars or dumptruck on MY roads

  • US cars full of problems all the while. Tesla has the technology but it does not mean that it is a good car. People just praise it like the Apple. It does not mean that Tesla is a good car. Handling and built quality are still a major concern rather than technology alone.

looking at the tests on the tesla cybertruck and how poorly made it is, we should probably stick to Chinese made cars.

If its a ford, i see Maverick has a better future but it would killed the Ranger market.
For GM, Chevrolet small SUV (Bolt, Trax, Trailblazer & Equinox) are very suitable candidates but im very skeptical with GM because they literally abandoned asian, then why they need it again?

Even if the F-150 come here tax free, the road tax, fuel consumption, maintenance cost will kill the owners. Also the truck is so big they cannot enter alot of elevated and basement parking lots. Better get Hilux, Dmax or if must be American get a Ranger instead.

Makes me wonder if PMX knows that American cars are so big, makan minyak and high maintenance that even with zero tax no one will be brave enough to buy.
