Transport minister Anthony Loke posted on Facebook yesterday that he has chaired a meeting with Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) and the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) on the need to ramp up ‘Road to Rail’ (transporting goods by rail rather than road) efforts.
“I emphasise that the ‘Road to Rail’ policy must be intensified and the argument that lorries are ‘cheaper’ must be corrected. Getting cheap rates through overloading is unacceptable. One 40-wagon train can reduce 80 lorries on our roads, lowering the risk of accidents and road congestion,” he said.
The road transport department (JPJ) and the transport ministry are cracking down on lorry overloading, although it was reported yesterday that some drivers are showing resistance by jettisoning their loads, and turning off their engines and GPS.
The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), expected to begin operations in stages from 2027, is a major project under the ‘Road to Rail’ initiative. One of the 13th Malaysia Plan’s (RMK13) aims is to increase rail goods from 6% to 13%.

MAHB , LTAT, boustead etc have a long track record of screwing up old projects. and yet they still can get gomen new projects.
Nah…this will hardly work because the main concern is last mile transportation. Numbers of lorry will only reduce at main highway. In each state, it will remain the same as goods still need lorry to reach their final destination.
“reduce at main highway” thats already removed the need for lorries for over half of the journey. obviously we dont expect train to reach final doorstep as that would be magic.
Can lower with the already low price of subsidised diesel for transport companies?
Exclude outstation transportation diesel subsidy then maybe possible.
Reshuffle the JPJ management. Only work culture change will solve problem in the long run
we have seen a lot of action from JPJ. Penguatkuasa perlu tegas dan konsisten untuk mengembalikan keyakinan rakyat. di sine sudah ada pendapat kurang keyakinan dgn daya upaya JPJ. oleh itu pegawai JPJ perlu ambil cabaran ini untuk memperbaiki imej dan respect rakyat.
Hope to allow back to bavk 20′ on one wagon.. and to allow higger tonnage pee wagon.. then only you van remove 80 ttucks for a 40 wagon train load…
