Why can’t toll payment be deducted through eWallet on PLUS? Physical TNG card top ups are a chore

Why can’t toll payment be deducted through eWallet on PLUS? Physical TNG card top ups are a chore

If you’ve ever been stuck at a toll booth due to “baki kurang”, you know the frustration. The worst part? There’s money in your eWallet, but the toll still refuses to let you through. Instead, it demands balance from your TNG card, which you’ve forgot to reload. This isn’t just your problem. It’s a system problem — one that millions of Malaysian motorists face daily.

But why is it not consistent? Some highways deduct from eWallet, and some from TNG card. The answer is PayDirect. If you’re using a TNG card that is linked to your eWallet, PayDirect bypasses the balance stored in the card in favour of your eWallet balance.

PayDirect was introduced in 2019, a couple of months after TNG launched the RFID pilot programme. Before that, it was all manual with cash at counters! This writer admits to being an extreme case, but the sole RM50 note I have is soon to survive eight months of 2025 and is looking good to last the entire year. Do people still have fat wallets these days?

Why can’t toll payment be deducted through eWallet on PLUS? Physical TNG card top ups are a chore

It didn’t take long for TNG’s PayDirect to be accepted at all city highways in the Klang Valley (we have many, lost count), and some toll plazas in other states followed suit, such as the Butterworth Outer Ring Road, Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (Second Penang Bridge) and the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar CIQ complex in Johor.

So, on some highways (or most highways, if you’re in the Klang Valley), toll payment is deducted straight from your TNG eWallet once you’ve linked your card – it’s simple, seamless and cashless. However, there’s an elephant in the room. At major highways like PLUS’ North South Expressway, and by extension the NKVE and Elite Highway – which together carry the bulk of Malaysian traffic – toll is still deducted from your TNG card balance.

This means that unless you keep topping up your physical card, you’re at risk of getting stuck at the toll gates. Never mind that there’s money in your TNG eWallet, the system ignores it.

Why can’t toll payment be deducted through eWallet on PLUS? Physical TNG card top ups are a chore

We’ve heard of PayDirect coming to PLUS-operated highways for some time now – since 2019 in fact, the year the method was introduced. As recent as February this year, TNG said that the long-awaited introduction of PayDirect at PLUS will be happening soon, and that the approval process with PLUS is ‘nearing completion’. Half a year has passed and there’s been no update.

Of the seven million users of PayDirect, 50% of them “face limitations due to the lack of PayDirect coverage on PLUS highways, restricting their ability to fully benefit from the service,” TNG said in an event back in February, sounding like they’re very eager to close the loop and have everyone onboard.

If one’s on PayDirect and his/her daily Klang Valley commute does not involve PLUS-operated highways, toll payment is truly cashless, without the need to manually reload the TNG card. However, many of us have routes that involve the NKVE or Elite in our super-connected network – if this is also you, there’s still a need to top-up your TNG card periodically and maintain a healthy balance there.

Why can’t toll payment be deducted through eWallet on PLUS? Physical TNG card top ups are a chore

Now, some might say that topping up the TNG card is a simple affair – and with today’s NFC cards, it’s pretty convenient and you can do it anywhere – but that’s still one more thing to monitor and execute in our busy urban life. It’s like another bill to pay, but one that has no fixed date. There’s also no ‘auto reload’ function for our physical cards, unlike eWallets.

We’ve all forgotten before, which is why there are so many cases of baki kurang at toll booths, something all of us hate (but are sometimes guilty of) as it backs up traffic at what’s already a choke point.

Launched in January this year, TNG eWallet’s SOS Balance feature – which delays toll payments for 24 hours (up to a maximum of RM80) if there is insufficient balance – assisted in over 700,000 transactions in less than a month from its launch. Of course, this feature is only helpful on highways that are linked to PayDirect.

Why can’t toll payment be deducted through eWallet on PLUS? Physical TNG card top ups are a chore

Finally, one for the finance bro/sis. If you’re the kind who dislikes your funds sitting idle – as opposed to being ‘parked’ in an interest-paying money market fund-type of account (TNG eWallet’s GO+ is an example) – then you won’t want to have too much credit in your TNG card. But if you reload small amounts, you’ll have to do it more often, which means diligent or… baki kurang, sorry everyone.

With all the recent talk about “modernising” Malaysia’s toll collection, the bigger question to the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) is this: shouldn’t we fix the basics first? Right now, motorists still face inconsistent rules, where some highways let you go fully cashless, while others force you to reload physical cards like it’s 2005. That’s not progress; that’s inefficiency.

Why should drivers adapt to multiple systems when every open payment option can be fully digitalised under one nationwide standard? A single, unified toll payment method, working the same way on every highway isn’t just a convenience. It’s about efficiency, and bringing Malaysia’s toll network into the modern age.

Until that happens, motorists will keep paying the price in frustration, wasted time and needless congestion.

  • AI-generated Summary ✨

Comments express frustration over the complexity and inconvenience of current toll payment systems, particularly the reliance on physical TNG cards that need frequent top-ups and are considered a chore. Many support the move toward cashless, seamless eWallet options and multi-lane free flow systems, criticizing the slow adoption by PLUS compared to other highways like LDP and SMART. Users appreciate auto-reload features and the convenience of digital tracking for claims, but some lament the monopolistic control and lack of standardization across highways. There is a general desire for a unified, forward-thinking system that offers multiple payment options and truly simplifies toll payments. Several commenters also criticize the systemic delays, perceived monopolies, and the need for better infrastructure to enhance user experience.

I get what you mean bro, it looks like TNG wants every highway to follow them. But actually, it’s not tng blocking it’s the highway operators choosing what to adopt. PayDirect is just an alternative for those who still use the physical card but want to track their balance in the eWallet. If ANPR or other systems come in, that’s great but while waiting for all highways to upgrade, at least there’s an option that makes things easier for users.. superb easy

Actually tng doesn’t have full control la, it’s the highway operators who decide. If TNG really controlled everything, all highways would already be on one standard. But in reality, some highways support e-wallet and some don’t, depending on the operator. Many people stick with TNG because it’s simple, you have the card, the e-wallet, and auto-reload options. At least there’s a choice, not a force

Just look at LDP and SMART… they’ve already opened to e-Wallet. Blaming TNG alone isn’t fair because PLUS itself hasn’t upgraded yet. At the end of the day, users don’t really care about who owns what, they just want it simple. And the eWallet now makes it easier to track spending, reload instantly, and make claims

Thumb up 23 Thumb down 0
    • Betul PayDirect product Tng, tapi x bermaksud semua highway kena ikut satu company. In fact, highway operators yang pilih nak buka payment option apa. Tengok LDP/SMART dah guna, tapi PLUS belum. At least dengan Tng ada satu standard untuk orang ramai boleh guna kad, e-wallet, debit card, credit card. Lagi senang untuk track bila claim or monitor perbelanjaan. Monopoli bukan point kat sini, convenience utk pengguna tu yang penting.

Kalau nak tunggu brand baru masuk, itu makan masa. At least sekarang PayDirect bagi option supaya orang tak pening check balance kat dua tempat…. tu kan senang tu, then blh auto-reload, boleh monitor transaction dalam ewallet, lagi senang especially untuk buat claim. just my POV

  • Pay and Pay on Sep 09, 2025 at 12:10 pm

Its pay and pay. Even the credit card top up service also need to charge. Better still, why not pay us interest for amounts sitting in the eWallet? Or waive credit card charges…. for goodness sake, TnG major shareholder is a bank…. they can’t waive the credit card charges? If I can top up with a little more without paying for the credit card charges, wouldn’t it allow TnG to earn more from interest on the float? Anyway, its pay and pay, and we the consumers have to bear with it.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
    • A lot of people feel the credit card top-up charges are frustrating, but don’t forget banks have their own processing costs for each card transaction. tng doesn’t keep all of that. If you reload via debit or auto-reload, there’s no extra charge. The good thing is, every transaction is recorded in the e wallet much easier if you need to claim later instead of digging through 10 receipts from different places. So it’s not just pay and pay, it’s about choosing the option that works best for you

are you sure bro. based on where plus is heading, there will be anpr and it will be linked to an app that is co-owned by the entire highway industry. in the coming months, all including ewallets will be in that app. that itself breaks the monopoly already and no need all sorts of physical cards. is that not more forward-thinking than paydirect? because paydirect still relies on physical cards. i dont think youre looking at the bigger picture. i want convenience but not to the point i feed cronies and there is something else that is more convenient.

Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0
    • Santi on Sep 18, 2025 at 10:49 am

hey bro, ANPR sounds futuristic but jangan lupa the highway operators themselves decide what system to use. LDP & SMART dah boleh guna ewallet sebab operator tu yang open. PLUS still belum. PayDirect bukan halang progress, it’s actually a bridge bcoz ramai lagi pengguna pakai kad fizikal TnG. At least dengan PayDirect, bila top up dalam ewallet terus link ke kad, so tak payah beratur top up kat kiosk. End of the day, people nak smooth drive, bukan gaduh pasal sistem siapa lebih forward-thinking. am i make any sense bro?

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
  • As far as i know, during the period when rfid/nfc card were introduced, they disabled the function where you can top your plus tng card through their app. It was hassle free. But with nfc its so inconvenient where you need to scan the physical card with your phone to top up. The rfid was a joke and clear evidence that it was a bad system with many people stuck at tolls. Why making less convenient?

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
  • Totally agree with you. But there are other issues you did not cover… There is generally only one RFID lane in most toll gates. Why can’t have more, or even in every lane? With 3 different payment methods to choose from as you approach cars dangerously crisscross lanes to get to the one they want. Many ways for someone to get stuck when the boom gate don’t open: not enough credit, low battery in smarttag, card or tag sensor failed, drive too fast thru or too close to car in front, car window tint blocks smarttag. So, common to see cars backing up in a stuck lane to go to the next one. And where is the promised MLFF multi lane free flow system?

I still use the old non-NFC and the only way to topup is to find a brick-and-mortar place to do it. RFID, eWallet, NFC card, non- NFC card…all from the same company but not integrated well enough. One also cannot mix and match the use RFID and card in closed till highways. Must remember what you used when entering highway else kena fine!

It’s not really TNG that’s blocking the system, the decision to adopt ANPR/plate scanning technology lies with each highway operator. That’s why highways like LDP and SMART can implement it, while PLUS hasn’t yet. Each operator evaluates the system based on their infrastructure, traffic management needs, and privacy considerations, so adoption timelines naturally vary

TnG has been a monopoly making things hard for people, and even now it’s not user-friendly.

What’s LLM’s problem anyway? Users are fine, there are plenty of choices now. As long as you have money, you’re good to go.

I think there are already many payment options, I can’t wait for JustGo later—faster and easier.

You can enter the toll using tng or smart tag and exit the toll using rfid so it will deduct from your ewallet but need to link your tng card to the tng app first

My tng card is going to expire in a few months time, so I am keeping the balance low and have to keep reloading. Refund process is a hassle.
